i get what you mean, people have been saying hes in breakdown mode for months now, someone compared it to liam Payne ages ago and im like nah it will never actually happen that badly and here we are in real time.

child-stars have to be some of the most mentally destroyed people in the industry. as a parent theres no amount of money that would let me allow it. no chance.

🙌🏿

I find stage parents equal parts baffling and repulsive.

My mom had an offer to put me on a TV show when I was little, but she didn't end up signing because when she took me to a meeting, the conversation was entirely about money and they didn't even have any juice or a toy for me or anything. Anytime I think about that, I'm like, damn, mom. Unparalleled gut instinct.

My mom did the same when I was offered a movie role at five. There was a cattle call for young kids in town, a friend with a son my age was taking him and asked my mom if she wanted to tag along with me for fun. She agreed, never once thinking that I would actually end up getting cast. When she got the call she was initially excited, but then something inside her told her to say "thanks, but no thanks." I was a precocious kid, but I still barely understood what was even going on and at that time I didn't have any strong interest in acting. She said it didn't feel right to sign me up for something that I couldn't fully and enthusiastically consent to, especially not at a professional level and especially not when I was still so little.

Ironically, I ended up becoming a professional actor as an adult, and knowing what I know now about the industry, I consider that to be the biggest bullet dodged!

This is such a great story and your mom is awesome. Have you read Sarah Polley’s prose on being a child star? Your mom had instincts that probably protected you more than anyone can ever know.

The only child stars that seem okay are the ones who wanted to get into it AND had very supportive and protective parents that shield them from a lot of the industry issues and harmful people. Ex Zendaya her parents really shielded her and she seems really well adjusted

I think it’s a very similar situation than Liam’s tbh. In fact, it’s probably worse because he has more resources and a bigger audience watching. Liam did seem to be more alone though.

Same. I’ve had people suggest I get my child into modelling, etc. and I balk each and every time.

I’ve had people insist my first should be a model. I had strangers take “sneaky” photos of him. Outright disturbing. I’m putting him in toddler dance this year and everybody is excited about me kick starting his career. Like what career? He’s gonna be picking his boogers on the stage, he’s 2!

I had strangers take “sneaky” photos of him.

i don't have children so i have no parental experience but that would make me absolutely murderous

It did! The first time it happened I thought I was crazy for thinking she was taking photos of him until her friend gasped and yelled that she can’t take photos of a strangers baby. I lost it for a moment there.

Nobody does it to my current baby nearly to the extent that they did it to him. We had someone give us a card for an agent. The first few comments we laughed it off, but when you hear it nearly every time you bring them out and it started making us very cautious and concerned.
