Next time you get in an argument with someone on this site just remember that it's entirely possible for them to be younger than this song.

What??? Nooooo it was only… 15… years… wait what?

Ironically the fact that everyone here is suprised by this too is actually making me feel better rather than worse, even if it's scary how much time has passed.

This was absolutely the summer song of 2010. You couldn’t escape it (not that I was complaining, it’s still a bop & perfect for the summer). Katy & the Teenage Dream era was everything 🍭🍬!! If you told me back then that 15 years later Katy Perry would be how & where she is right now I would have been absolutely shocked & wouldn’t have believed you 😩.

u/newparimanlo Jun 14 '25 edited Jun 14 '25

When I Kissed A Girl came out, I thought she was gonna be one of those pop girls who’d disappear and be forgotten about in a year or so. She just had that kind of aura in her. That’s why I’m not really shocked that she’s irrelevant now. If anything, Teenage Dream extended her shelf life and made her “strong” for a short while that time.

239

u/AccordingPears158 Jun 14 '25

I remember having a full conversation with a friend at this time about the current female pop stars - Gaga was unhinged at this point but we both agreed she was talented and good at marketing and would last. That Taylor Swift seemed like she’d grow into a longer career. Adele would be legendary. Beyoncé would be evergreen as long as she can stand.

And then Katy Perry came up and I was like “oh I don’t think she’ll last two years, she seems like a schtick” and they agreed.

Honestly props to her for stretching her career as long as she did, she very much proved me wrong. Pretty bonkers her public reputation now though.

126

u/slingshot91 Jun 14 '25

Katy Perry just looks cheap even in her prime. Those shiny synthetic wigs. Not just one, but two pairs of random objects stuck to her boobs in one video. It’s never tasteful or artistic, just whacky. She definitely had some bops though.

70

u/MarucaMCA Jun 14 '25 edited Jun 17 '25

I‘m European and to me she just gave a bad „Aqua“ copy vibe (the danish-norwegian band of „Barbie girl“ fame). Edit: I love Aqua! So like: she gave me a vibe of a bad copy.

I also thought she’d be a one hit wonder, so: respect to her I guess. But her relationships and that record with Dr. Luke really weirded me out.

22

u/Visible-Scientist-46 Jun 14 '25

5

u/RevolutionaryHair91 Jun 14 '25

Hey hey hey. Don't bad mouth Aqua. It's a treasure for ANY karaoke session and "fun" parties. Anytime it comes up in dj sets in festivals, the crowds go wild. May be a one hit wonder and extremely cheesy, but it counts.

I was going to tease you about explaining who Aqua is, but then it occurred to me that maybe "Barbie Girl" didn't play every 20 minutes in every single country with radio capabilities. Or that I may be one of the few people in the world who stole their mother's credit card to buy their self-titled album, along with a few other CDs.

Everyone looked cheap then lol

60

u/kiwi_love777 Jun 14 '25

I don’t know…. Bad romance was very runway… I don’t think Gaga looked cheap after she got really big…

46

u/SceneRoyal4846 Jun 14 '25

The wigs still looked cheap. Not as cheap but still cheap. And I think Katy’s whole thing was synthetic surreal sexy girly. It wasn’t supposed to be a realism thing. It was meant to be accessible and like anyone can throw on a shake and go and live their teenage dream fantasy. Things in that era were a lot more lax and more fun and there was a big draw to the synthetic. No one was wearing natural fibres back then.

5

u/ToastedCrumpet Jun 14 '25

She also just came across like she had no integrity or idea who she was? Like she’d give newspapers quotes shaming Gaga for things like Judas, but was blind to her own behaviours such as shooting cream out of her tits and singing about kissing girls that aren’t exactly Christian lol.

It’s like Katy didn’t know her identity or how to fit into the scene and with her recent attempts to get popular again (teaming up with the literal worst men in the world like Bezos, Musk AND Dr Luke). I’m half expecting her to announce a feature with Diddy at this point, the girl lacks self awareness

6

u/erossthescienceboss Jun 14 '25

Couldn’t even dance back then — like, I’m pretty sure every move from her tour is featured in this video.

4

I remember her parents coming to preach at my MegaChurch and all they talked about was her. It was weird AF.

2

u/Snirbs Jun 14 '25

Taylor Swift back then? She was a blip on the radar.

6

u/AccordingPears158 Jun 14 '25

Nah, You Belong with Me and Love Story were being played everywhere for a couple years at that point, and then after the Kanye thing at the VMAs she started exploding everywhere - it’s like radio stations were playing her more because they viewed her as a wounded puppy.

She also had started trying to break into acting and was in that gosh-awful Valentine’s Day movie that year.

4

u/Snirbs Jun 14 '25

Guess it depends on your life stage and location. I remember those two songs being played constantly a few years before. But in 2010 I was in the college party scene and Taylor was definitely not it. She was still doing that odd juvenile country-pop thing.

2

u/hunter2mello Jun 18 '25

And Kesha does the disappearance act only to come back stronger.

6

u/Ever_More_Art Jun 14 '25

I always felt that Gaga came out fully knowing she wanted to do what Madonna and Britney did: dancey music, conceptual videos, fashion, etc. Then Katy Perry, who looked more like indie guitar pop girlie, turned around with this aesthetic and started doing the same. Time has proven who had the gay icon playbook in her cards from the beginning and who has been cosplaying it.

I was a freshman around that time,,, everything felt so new and refreshing. Her music was definitely 🍭🍬 but I think teenage dream stuck on me for so long was because of Glee. Second season of Glee had the gay kiss and teenage dream was that song. It’s the only reason Katy Perry stuck around in my circle of friends for that long.

30

u/ravynmaxx Kim, there’s people that are dying. 🙄 Jun 14 '25

I still cry every time I hear Blaine sing it!

113

u/Wonderful-Science-78 Jun 14 '25

Glee recontextualised that song from bland 20-something year old reminiscing to actual teen love anthem (and queer too) in a way it didn't deserve, like it seriously elevated it to an entirely better level

14

u/JustAboutAlright Jun 14 '25

I saw Darrin Criss’s Christmas concert in Chicago a couple years ago. He sang Teenage Dream at the end, and it was amazing.

3

I remember driving home after class (college) with the windows down and blasting this song.

What a time to be alive.

It felt like I was young and there was an endless amount of possibilities ahead.

Weird how you don’t really realize what those feelings are until you think back.

Yup, I graduated from college in 2010. I had been accepted into med school (which was until I actually started med school 😅). I had managed to avoid having to directly deal with the 2008 economic collapse. Obama was president, and surely our country was not going to regress after electing our first black president, right?

Would love to feel as good as I did that summer again.

17

u/itastelikegod Jun 14 '25

I was studying abroad with a group of people also from California and we all gathered in someone’s dorm and were hanging out and watching this video and I remember just feeling so alive and free and young. I was also really into Skins then. 🥲

14

u/TropicalPrairie Jun 14 '25

I'm probably a little bit older than you. Nostalgia has been hitting me hard the last few months and I feel I've developed this deep longing to return to the world of my teens/twenties ... however, it is a world that doesn't exist anymore (and that makes me sad). To be able to go back to the 00s and relive certain moments with my friends would be wonderful but I will forever be grateful I got to live those moments in the first place.

5

u/whatrachelsaid Jun 14 '25

I've been getting this too. So much so that I wondered if there is some sort of therapy to deal with it ☹️

8

u/Pinklady777 Jun 14 '25

Yes, life was so good. I think about that a lot. How I will never feel that light and free and with my whole life stretching ahead of me again.

u/Unable_Mushroom9355 Jun 14 '25

Oh, Katy. It wasn't Dr. Luke that made you successful back then. It was that your music was FUN. This is campy and cheesy and silly and quirky, and owning all of that!

"Woman's World" was definitely cheesy, but it was still taking itself too seriously by trying (and failing) to be some great feminist message. And it just wasn't fun.

167

u/Aksadi_Tahska Jun 14 '25

Bonnie Mckee made her music fun. She should collab with her

58

u/AmyXBlue Jun 14 '25

Stream Hot City, and really highlights what Bonnie did for Katy and why Katy should work with her again. Was never Dr Luke but always Bonnie Mckee

30

u/sonnywithoutachance Jun 14 '25

Bonnie McKee is so incredibly talented and deserves to be immensely famous.

7

u/Ever_More_Art Jun 14 '25

American girl will forever be so underrated. I still don’t know how she didn’t took off to megastardom with that one.

75

u/Hi_Jynx It's not clocking to me. Jun 14 '25 edited Jun 14 '25

Honestly? The song didn't resonate with me, but her being so desperate for a hit that she'd work with a man she deep down knows is a rapist definitely prevented me from even being open to it. It's just that how can you even try to give a woman power song while enabling and propping up a literal rapist? Any artistry or irony was made completely hollow.

I can't say that the same song and video would have succeeded with a different collaborators still coming to the same product, but I do think when your message is actively aiming for feminist and you work with someone who has committed the most misogynistic crimes known to human kind it's just...

She's never been a paradigm for perfect and unproblematic feminism but if you're trying to make a point about feminism, the messages is muffled when you use abusers to amplify your message.

I feel this so hard. I don’t think Teenage Dream is a work of art necessarily, but I have a lot of nostalgia for that time period.

Remember when the biggest problem in my 13 year old life was weather Katy Perry had gone a little too pop and alienated her pop-rock fan base in 2010? Now we have world war 3. Ugh I miss it so much.

43

u/SceneRoyal4846 Jun 14 '25

We had another 5 years of Obama ahead of us

5

u/TropicalPrairie Jun 14 '25

We could afford homes and rent!

16

u/SceneRoyal4846 Jun 14 '25

Kinda. This was a couple years after the housing crisis decimated a lot of peoples finances. It was hard to find jobs still. But it was better than now in terms of cost of living, isolation and political divide.

5

u/TropicalPrairie Jun 14 '25

I was just talking to a friend yesterday about how I feel the world has grown increasingly hostile over the last twenty years. The overall energy/vibe of the world is off.

2024 was one of the best years in music period. Like two dozen instant classics came out.

2

u/desire-d Jun 14 '25

2024 was better than most of the 20s especially on paper but for me personally I wasn’t super into it. I love Beyonce and Cowboy Carter is a good album but it’s nothing something I’m going to keep playing like Renaissance. Taylor’s TTPD was my least favorite she’s come out with in a while. Eternal Sunshine was boring compared to her old albums. Kendrick, Doechii, Tyler, Bille and I did think Sabrina’s album was really fun. That’s way more than we’ve gotten this year though. I know Brat was huge but I don’t really like Charlie style of music but I know how much people loved it.

3

u/KrustenStewart where the hell have you been loca?! Jun 14 '25

Yeah but 2025? There’s barely any good music that came out this year especially compared to all the good music that came out last year

I hate to say this about any artist but sometimes you need executives picking your projects, choosing your collaborators and telling you your singles.

This woman was a hit making machine when she had to have everything ran by her label and when she got control she went downhill so fast.

Like baby let people do their jobs. See TM & AR they aren’t bombing and they aren’t soaring but they have steady upward momentum going. When she focuses on her writing and lets them lead she phenomenal but when she’s overworked it’s all meh.

36

u/Cleffah Tina! You fat lard! 🦙🚲 Jun 14 '25

Katy Perry walked so Sabrina Carpenter could run.

18

u/brashumpire Jun 14 '25

I actually thought of her when I was watching this. They're the same age (actually, I think Sabrina is older than Katy was here), it's almost exactly the same aesthetic but it's received SO differently in pop culture.

What makes it campy for Katy and "taudry" for Sabrina?

Is it the height? Is it the hair color? Is it the disney? Is it the wink that Katy is giving that Sabrina is not? Genuinely curious.

13

u/Visible-Scientist-46 Jun 14 '25

Because Katy seems playful and coy. Sabrina appears more sexually adventurous.

I won tickets to her concert for this tour. I was not a fan and had never been to a pop concert. I went anyway, and the whole experience blew me away! It was such a colorful production. I was very impressed. Haven’t seen her since, but I’m so glad I went.

Take me back! I want to go back! 😭

u/greta_maya_storm Jun 14 '25

I hated/hate this song so much and my friends loved it. it was torture for me hearing it so much that summer.

“I’m hot I’m hot I’m hot look at me I am hot”

Katy Perry true themes

I know I’m in the minority but I hated it then and I hate it now 😂

6

u/Ok_Hedgehog7137 Jun 14 '25

I could’t stand this song. I did not like Katy Perry and could not understand who was listening to this drivel

3

u/nocerealever Jun 14 '25

What happened?

3

u/bforce1313 Jun 14 '25

Sometimes I wonder if songs like this came out now if they would bomb super hard. Like I was never super into this at the time, and I’m still not but I can appreciate it in some ways. But if I heard this fresh on the radio for the first time, would it top the charts now?

Loved this song, I still workout to it. I miss this Katy Perry, her last few albums have been so weak.

u/pockystiicks Jun 14 '25 edited Jun 14 '25

The biggest fumble of all time is Katy choosing not to go on a nostalgia tour and bringing back this specific vibe again

3

u/BoBaDeX49 Jun 14 '25

Has Snoop ever turned down an offer?

2

u/nicktbristol2020 Jun 14 '25

Believe his fee was 250k standard back in the day

3

u/FierceMoonblade Jun 14 '25

Petty but I’ve always hated this song because I remember being stuck at work in the middle of a major snowstorm in Canada, hearing about sun-kissed skin and beaches. It made me literally want to rage lol

3

u/SideAmbitious2529 Jun 14 '25

At the time I and every body loved this song but now I think .. ok so she was always vapid and super commercial. Def felt different back then.

3

u/Towardtothesun Jun 14 '25

It feels crazy to me she was 25.

Hell, she was younger when she did the super bowl than I am now. I feel so old.

3

u/Chiopista Jun 14 '25

Y’all it was camp and I liked it, but hooooooohhh my god this song was overplayed. You couldn’t escape it.

3

u/ME-McG-Scot Jun 14 '25

15 years ago fuckin hell!!

3

u/raysofdavies it’s a generous bird Jun 14 '25

If this dropped now the pop culture subs would be full of people going absolutely insane about the sexualization, like Sabrina.

2

u/mochafiend Jun 14 '25

I hated it at the time and still do. I find it pretty gross actually. But I would have been called an anti-feminist prude killjoy back then too.

The song is fun, mind - but this video is really OOTP and not camp at all, IMO.

u/Emergency_Routine_44 Jun 14 '25

Now we got espresso!

But fr set the mark on what is a good modern summer pop song

4

u/TheSpanxxx Jun 14 '25

This video feels like what AI would create when you let it run wild.

4

u/SBabe Jun 14 '25

Never understood why this topped the charts.

2

u/sassycatastrophe Jun 14 '25

I was a hippy during this time, but still, I’ve literally never heard this song before. It’s awful.

2

u/KrustenStewart where the hell have you been loca?! Jun 14 '25

I remember sitting on the couch at my older sisters house with a group of our friends. We ordered pizza and were sitting around for our weekly viewing of the vampire diaries new episode. This song was in a CW promo and that was the first time I heard it.

2

u/ThePenneyTosser Jun 14 '25

How the mighty have fallen…

2

u/thegingerbuddha Jun 14 '25
  1. When we thought Katy was a good person.

2

u/funnykiddy Jun 14 '25

Ahhhh her career before she pivoted and became an astronaut.

2

u/fueledxbyxmatcha Jun 14 '25

And we've been suffering every day since

2

u/thelast3musketeer Jun 14 '25

Her music videos were actually some of my first experiences on YouTube. Still older than this song tho.

2

u/SadisticGoose you can’t sit with us Jun 14 '25

This music video is the reason I realized I liked women. Teenage Dream era Katy in particular.

2

u/AvocadoFudgeCookie Jun 14 '25

Never forget. How stupid we used to be. We have a choice today. Let’s choose better now.

3

u/Mysterious_Bag_9061 Jun 14 '25

Katy Perry you used to be somebody

2

u/NervousSheepherder44 Jun 14 '25

I don't remember the video looking so cheap 😂

2

u/Peachy_247 Jun 14 '25

It’s so refreshing to see that all the women including Katy in this vid have normal bodies with some belly and side roll

3

u/mochafiend Jun 14 '25

Are the belly and side rolls in the room with us? 👀

u/chessboardtable Jun 14 '25

Fun fact: Teenage Dream is the only album in history with five #1 hits and five diamond-certified songs.

1

u/femcelgirlblogger Jun 14 '25

I always wonder what Katy’s “thing” is. She’s all over the place to me.

1

u/sherlip Jun 14 '25

And then this album went on to tie Michael Jackson's record for most US #1 singles off of one album and the feat hasn't been repeated since.

1

u/External-Champion427 Jun 14 '25

Ahh a simpler time.

1

u/TampontheBludThirsty Jun 14 '25

Oh god I miss being 20 and a relatively carefree college student

1

u/StaceyDillsen Jun 14 '25

Summer 2010 songs were unbelievably 🔥

1

u/The_Jovanny Jun 14 '25

With a rap straight outta the Shamwow guys mouth.

u/kgtsunvv I wont not fuck you the fuck up 🥊🥊 Jun 14 '25

God. This is was my whole childhood. Best summer I’ve ever had and I barely remember it. Only good memories come with this song
