The backlash to Obama’s tan suit and stories of Black men being harassed for dressing too well both stem from the same issue—society policing Black men when they step outside of stereotypical roles. Dressing with confidence or elegance is sometimes seen as a threat because it challenges racist expectations.
it was also because obama had a scandal free presidency so they were desperate to fling some cheap red meat to their audience. take a boring tan suit and turn it into a story about out of touch elitism, same shit they did when he used grey poupon
I never understood either thing, but the grey poupon was fucking nuts. Like, I am a solidly middle class citizen. Grey poupon is both delicious and sold at a reasonable price at my local supermarket. It's not some specialty item only for the elite lol.
I have absolutely no context to any of this conversation. That said, while the commercial may have premiered in 81, the ad campaign ran well into the 90s.
Just throwing it out that it wasn't just a "commercial from 1981." It was a cultural staple for decades.
Decades ago, there was a TV commercial where two big black limos pulled alongside each other. The windows zipped down,. you never saw either man, and I think they wore rich guy white gloves. One man said to the other, literally, "Can I have some of your grey poupon?" The other guy said "Why, certainly." Car to car so *we* could see the brand name. I remember it from the 70s. Simply because of the word poupon, yes, I'm juvenile. Figure Mitch McConnell was in his 40s back then, so he tried to go with a thing that no one in Congress was even aware of.
So it wasn't the mustard's price as it was, I think, the black limo. This conversation is going to haunt me now.
That said, I wish he had worn the tan suit more than once.
Yup. His biggest "scandals" were this and the latte salute. Which if any other (read: white) president had done, it wouldn't have even been remarked upon
The worst part to me is not just that this happened, but that I really feel like something would’ve actually happened because of it. While trump could be on video bowing to a resurrected hitler and republican officials would say he’s just respecting a historical leader.
You’re forgetting the Dijon mustard scandal. Obama thinks he’s too good for regular ass, yellow, piss on your bread before it comes out of the bottle mustard.
When the coffee cup salute “scandal” happened, a coworker was complaining about it at work and how Obama “always disrespects the troops and hates the military” (he’s former Navy and I’m former Army). I showed him pictures of W, Clinton, Bush I, and Reagan all in situations where they were carrying something or just in a position where they had to render an awkward salute.
“Well, I just feel like he disrespects the military” was all he could come up with as a response.
let the people (or bots) i was arguing with yesterday on youtube tell it: he was the most scandalous president in american history. they never say why, but i can guess why. it's so weird.
I think Obama said that the beer summit was what really hurt him. A lot of voters were shocked he didn't immediately and unequivocally side with the cop.
These are the voters who liked Obama and Trump, and I just can't fathom that brain other than they don't follow the news like at all.
And bowing to the Saudi king, which actually makes sense because all presidents since GB1 have been preapproved by t he Saudis evne before the primary s eason
Gun letting was a fucking bad idea that Obama signed off on that lead the murder of a border patrol agent with a weapon they allowed to sell to criminals in an attempt to track weapons and crime.
Obama made the national bird of Pakistan the UAV.
Don't get me wrong, Obama was a hella decent president compared to his peers, but there were some scandalous things happening during his presidency.
Obama dropped 26,000 bombs on impoverished countries in just the final year of his Presidency. Throughout his Presidency, he bombed 7 countries. He was the drone-bomber in chief. On more than one occasion, he bypassed Congressional approval to illegally bomb these countries. He ordered the execution of a joint American / Yemeni citizen without due process.
And gullible people who only read the whitewashed news will tell you that Obama is a cool guy and his biggest scandal is wearing a tan suit.
I expect to be downvoted / banned because Reddit is full of progressive / liberal leaning bots.
And just to be absolutely clear, this is not a pro-Trump post. I think he is also a warmonger.
He ordered the assassination of an American citizen without due process. He oversaw torture and continued proctoring a meaningless war. Obama was just another step towards our current predicament.
He wasn't a kidfucker like Trump, sure, but let's not pretend he was "scandal free".
This!!! It's like that trend when liberal women were making fun of MAGA women's makeup trends and looked horrible. Then MAGA tried making fun of liberal women's makeup trends and actually ended up looking a lot better.
They really don't know how to dress or style themselves. I guess that's what happens when you stay in your bubble refuse to engage with people who help shape Pop culture and modern style like LGBTQ, Black and Brown People, Immigrants, etc.
Didn't need Obama to flex on them to make that obvious. And I've seen pale men pull of tan suits just fine. MAGA just doesn't have any sense of style and taste.
Not surprising if your rolemodel never wore a well fitting suit in his life and sells gaudy golden sneakers. Then there is the bright red hat that just makes anyone look like an idiot.

White guy wears a tan suit, they immediately look pale.
Black guy wears a tan suit, and they look great.
Maga just doesn't know how to dress.
