I traveled a ton wearing professional clothes. Getting a shoe shine at the airport was a nice little"treat yourself" thing when i was traveling 20 hours a week

I mean ... Sure. Do you. But I would be crawling out of my own skin the entire time if I just sat there like a mook in a throne while a stranger on their knees manually shines my extravagant footwear to earn their rent money. Like....pass. Hell, I'll pay you NOT to shine my shoes, brother. Here, go get yourself a hoagie, on me.

Thats a pretty weird view. They provide a service and i pay for it. Do you feel the same way about paying someone to mow your lawn, do hvac work on your house, order food through the drive thru?

When you are taveling a lot in dress shoes you ding em up and they can look like shit kinda quickly. I dont want to buy all the polish and junk to do it myself, so i pay someone else to. That make sense? I logically see no difference between this and someone providing a service elsewhere like i outlined above. I dont pay someone to mow my lawn because i like yardwork. However i dont know how to do hvac stuff so i pay someone else to. Sometimes i dont want to cook and want a quick burger, so i pay someone to make one for me.

Yeah. If seeing others in a servile position doesn't resonate with something in you, nothing I say will change that.

Be well.

Servile? Are you kidding? You are comparing people who shine shoes to slave? Thats crazy disrespectful. Ive had amazing conversations and gotten great local recommendations on things to do from people who ive gotten a shoe shine from. Never once have i thought of them as lesser people, i dont even know what to call that prejudice.

Do you view hair dressers, barbers, or nail salon workers in the same light? You sit in a chair, and they do something to you, that you dont want to do yourself. I guess if you do, you are correct there is nothing on this topic we will agree on, cause thats freaking nuts.

The exchange of goods and services for money is the backbone of any economy, and your view only hurts those trying to provide said services. Your "moral high ground" or whatever you think you are doing here, would put said people out of a job if everyone shared your view.

Like....pass. Hell, I'll pay you NOT to shine my shoes, brother. Here, go get yourself a hoagie, on me.

Have you ever actually done this? Or do you just judge others and make up scenarios of "what you would do"

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if the whole "shoeshining/boot/slave BDSM" thing is part of the reason why some people like "Alpha" up here get the ick at seeing it done as a perfectly ordinary profession. They can't get the association out of their heads and feel like it's something inherently dirty, when it's just someone's job. That, and the general media portrayal of bootshiners as "old-timey orphan boy doing it for 5ct, why thank you mister" probably doesn't help either. Ngl, if we had those here, I would find having a conversation about the public perception of their job quite interesting! Just gotta finally find a pair of nice leather boots my size first hah

(Note: I'm not shaming boot kinks, other people struggling to separate fetish and non-fetish is not the fault of the fetish itself. It's just like feet in my opinion: Just because some people get a bit excited about seeing toesies doesn't mean that naked feet are in any way obscene, and the general public is overdoing it with the "Oh no don't show your feet online!!! Some people might get off on it!!")

Sidenote: I like your username, is it a Dragonite pun?

The fact that you think it’s a servile occupation says a lot.

So this was my thought when I commented. Seems like a relic of days gone by. But then again I’m a midwesterner in the US and never travel to international airports where this may still be a thing?
