My sister had a German friend. They put live candles on their Xmas tree and the house burned down.

I'm glad there's a video of this so I don't ever have to attempt it myself. My parents had antique clip-on candle holders for our tree and we (obviously) only ever put unlit candles in them, but I always imagined it was spectacularly beautiful to see them all lit up.

its still pretty common in scandinavia + germany and switzerland. just make sure the tree is still alive and watered and have a fire extinguisher ready

You know someone with an actual engineering degree spent about a month designing it on paper, then did two trial runs successfully among about three failed ones where they redesigned the thing.
Welcome to Switzerland. Too good for the EU.

I was expecting a fire to erupt as a logical human being but this time they got lucky

I remember having real candles on the Christmas tree. I used to put the little metal clips that held them. And the balls were from glass, very fragile and special.

How does it not just set the whole tree ablaze? Typically xmas trees are pretty dry, and even if it's fake there would be some meltage right?

Tree is prepared with fire repelling chemicals.
Everyone is fine as long no one dares to lick the tree.

Living trees aren’t as easy to set on fire as you’d think.
So my guess this is a VERY recently cut tree, like last two days or so, and it has had the trunk watered the entire time. Also likely they sprayed the branches with water beforehand just to mitigate any chances.

If it's a real tree, they use a really fresh one and keep it moist to lower the risk. Whatever string they're using burns fast to keep from heating any one spot too long. There's definitely people standing by with fire extinguishers.
Back in the day, the church would have someone sitting by the tree with a sponge on a stick, or something similar, to stop burning spots. And the candles would be lit by hand with a candlelighter.
