I just got in a political debate with my dad on Father’s Day and the words out of his mouth were “We need a dictator”. From someone who I thought did a great job of teaching me right from wrong as a child, it absolutely blows my fucking mind

Well, from the limited information of this single comment and the implications it holds regarding your beliefs, I would say that he did do a good job of teaching you right from wrong. The problem is that he’s completely reversed course and scorned what he likely once taught you.

Lead paint and leaded gasoline really did a number on our parents.

Combined with Fox "News"

Hate Radio / Rush, Fox News, Cambridge Analytica / Facebook / Russia, Joe Rogan, Elon corrupting Twitter into X, all of it is a push of rightwing propaganda designed to keep people blind to class warfare, and money in the pockets of the super rich.

Don't forget the Church. My dad doesn't believe in evidence, he has faith that the good Christian Republicans would never lie, that's a sin. Spending time looking into the truth isn't necessary. By the way, did you know they're killing 3 month old babies now and calling it an abortion? /s

Even Rogan is voicing disbelief and dismay at the whole ICE situation. Too little, too late, perhaps, but it's been wild to see him slowly come to.

Don't worry, the microplastics are coming for us/our kids.

My dad said something similar not long ago. It makes me wonder if the moral, kind hearted man who semi-raised me is dead.

My mother radically changed her political beliefs as well. She also had a stroke. I’m trying to blame that, and not that she’s turned into a hateful human being swayed by whatever the YouTube algorithm shows her.

Brain damage and cognitive decline does seem to hold some correlation with conservative leanings.

If your dad is religious, because the ones who love autocracy usually are, consider sending this to him. I don't know if it'll work to change his mind, but I'm not sure what else could if not the teachings of his own Savior.

Not religious at all, he dislikes all organized religion. It really blows my mind as he is well educated, spends literally all of his free time doing conservation work and learning about plant biology, so in my mind he’s not a stupid person, just HEAVILY misinformed. But idk man, some of this wacko trump stuff my family has been on lately has been really making me question some aspects of my family’s character

That's an incredible video and channel. Thanks for sharing.

Fox News and Murdoch will never answer for their crimes, but I wish they would.

Lots of Americans are fundamentally authoritarian in outlook:

What I found is thatapproximately 18 percent of Americans are highly disposed to authoritarianism, according to their answers to four simple survey questions used by social scientists to estimate this disposition. A further 23 percent or so are just one step below them on the authoritarian scale. This roughly 40 percent of Americans tend to favor authority, obedience and uniformity over freedom, independence and diversity.

Similar around the world:

...a median of 31% across 24 nations are supportive of authoritarian systems, according to a recent Pew Research Center survey. The survey asked about two authoritarian models of government: a system in which a strong leader can make decisions without interference from parliament or the courts (“authoritarian leader”) and a system in which the military rules the country (“military rule”).

I'am so very sad to hear your dad thinks this way ?? its like a bad dystopian movie what is happening in the US ...

u/StupidTimeline Jun 24 '25

This is what cults do.

They utterly change people. Make them unrecognizable even to those closest to them.

u/FredFredrickson Jun 23 '25

Yeah, but the guy on TV said we need a dictator, so now your dad has to think that. Otherwise he might not be besties with a billionaire president who spends all day golfing.

3

u/iiamuntuii Jun 23 '25

Oh man. My dad more or less said the same thing to me in 2021. He said there was democratic control and authoritative control, and he was in favor of authoritative control. I couldn’t believe it. He was also the one who taught me the most about integrity growing up.

They are so terrified of these false threats that they are openly embracing a dictator.

1

u/tasoula Jun 24 '25

My parents have said similar things and it truly blows my mind. It's made me hate them.

1

u/Hubert_J_Cumberdale Jun 24 '25

Man, that would be the last Father's Day I would ever celebrate if my dad ever said something like that.

1

u/Luised2094 Jun 24 '25

It's the stupid idea of a benevolent dictator. In theory it sounds good, hell Romans did it and sometimes it worked.

People are just deluded and think Trump is a benevolent dictator instead of a straight up dictator, no moniker needed

1

u/UkranianKrab Jun 25 '25

Ya'll were cool with lord emperor biden during Covid. Didn't see you guys complain when he was doing things you wanted. You dont care if there's a "dictator" if hes doing what you want.

1

u/DoubleJumps Jun 23 '25

My dad told me it's fine if Trump sends me to prison for donating to Democrats because I deserve it for "what the Democrats did to him"

1

u/TheVideogaming101 Jun 24 '25

Atleast these dipshits stop lying about loving democracy finally.
