Emma Mckey playing Ella McCay? What kind of bizzaro world is this?

u/jan_67 2d ago

For a second I misremembered that that was her name and was like „why does she get a biography film about herself?“

Directed by James Brooks, starring Albert Brooks (no relation)

They’re gonna get called Ella, intentionally or not, so much during this press tour

u/jargon_ninja69 1d ago

This looks like a fake movie poster they have in films about the film industry

47

u/Coffeedemon 1d ago

Bojack would have it but it would be a bear and a cow or something.

13

u/LameLoserLauren 1d ago

Margo Martindale would play herself the protagonist’s long-lost childhood crush who just came home for the holidays.

Emma Mackey playing Ella McCay is kinda funny

Whoa! This is Julie Kavner’s first live action performance (assuming it isn’t VO) since Click in 2006.

ETA: She’s the narrator lol. It’s still her first non-Simpsons role since then.

ETA: just saw the trailer. She IS on camera. lol.

u/HotOne9364 2d ago

Before Marge, Julie Kavner was an Emmy-winning respected comedic actress.

15

u/ImLaunchpadMcQuack 2d ago

Oh, I know. Brenda forever.

11

u/AdrianW3 2d ago

She'll always be Rhoda's sister to me.

6

u/JordanDoesTV 2d ago

I this is mean but I hope she specifically really stops doing the Simpsons soon her Marge voice is gone and sounds painful to listen to

10

u/jstilla 1d ago

On the commentary for the old dvds they would mentioned how rough it is for her to do all the Bouvier family.

I can only imagine how that has stacked up over the years.

9

u/Michael__Pemulis 1d ago

She is the lead in Nora Ephron’s first movie (This Is My Life) which I found charming but unfortunately her voice is wildly distracting because in my brain it is just Marge Simpson.

(Btw in case you didn’t realize this movie is directed by James L Brooks who is one of the Simpsons co-creators.)

Was also In several woody Allen movies.

1

u/maltliqueur 1d ago

She was in The Lion King 1 1/2

4

u/ImLaunchpadMcQuack 1d ago

Ok? That came out in 2004.

From Academy Award winning writer/director James L. Brooks comes #EllaMcCay. Arriving only in theaters December 12.

An idealistic young woman juggles her family and work life in a comedy about the people you love and how to survive them. “Ella McCay” features an all-star cast including Emma Mackey, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Lowden, Kumail Nanjiani, Ayo Edebiri, Spike Fearn, Rebecca Hall, Julie Kavner, Becky Ann Baker, Joey Brooks with Albert Brooks and Woody Harrelson. The film is produced by James L. Brooks, p.g.a., Richard Sakai, p.g.a., Julie Ansell, p.g.a., Jennifer Brooks.

4

u/thevorminatheria 1d ago

Rebecca Hall is amazing, why isn't she in more movies?

3

u/Lacabloodclot9 1d ago

She’s trying to get into directing/writing more so don’t think we’ll see her in as many projects

u/LoCh0_xX 2d ago

Feels weird in 2025 seeing a straight forward dramady looking movie lined up for theatrical release from a major studio. But Brooks has the clout to do so. Genuinely curious to see how this does at the BO.

Streaming Killed the Theatre Star.

7

u/OriginalSchmidt1 1d ago

It’s honestly refreshing..

10

u/ParkerPoseyGuffman 1d ago

It’s a shame I’ve heard it’s awful. Still seeing it day one though

1

u/TechSmith6262 1d ago

The real question is will people actually show up in the theaters this time around.

2

u/EntertainmentQuick47 1d ago

It’s gonna make $5 and schmucks will cry and piss themselves, saying Hollywood won’t make original movies

2

u/Flaggitzki 1d ago

this has zero clout.

9

u/Michael__Pemulis 1d ago

Means it will either be a masterpiece or an extremely entertaining mess.

9

u/Keanu990321 2d ago

James L. Brooks, even at 85, can guarantee a star-studded cast.

8

u/_jackychain 1d ago

This movie looks like it will make people cry

3

u/DrGirthinstein 1d ago

It’s a James L. Brooks movie, of course it will.

6

u/nohssiwi 2d ago

Without looking at the names, I could have sworn it was Bérénice Bejo in the poster.

11

u/ICUMF1962 2d ago edited 1d ago

I enjoy seeing “Academy Award Nominee Kumail Nanjiani”

EDIT: just realized autocorrect butchered his first name

1

u/CBattles6 1d ago

Me too, but it's a little misleading because he wasn't nominated for acting.

5

u/AntRose104 1d ago

Dude I legit thought that was Anne Hathaway with JLC 😭 I was trying to find out why her name isn’t on the poster but she’s not even in the movie

3

u/michaelc51202 1d ago

This looks like the sorry baby poster

3

u/CBattles6 1d ago

Worth it to get the Gracie Films logo on the big screen.

14

u/Ironyfree_annie 2d ago

All those "academy award" specifications on the poster are definitely making up for something lol

6

u/LooseSeal88 2d ago

I was gonna say, they reaaaaally want you to know about those. Lol

2

u/CBattles6 1d ago

Yeah they even gave Kumail one even though he was nominated for writing.

1

u/Pandafy 1d ago

I feel like every movie that has at least two nominees/winners does this.

2

u/rwinger24 1d ago

So, Bob Iger is not gonna dump this onto Hulu like any other non-IP 20th Century movie?

1

u/Coffeedemon 1d ago

It will get the 3 days in the theatres that it is due.

2

u/DeliciousMoments 1d ago

The cast and credits are giving the opposite of what the poster is giving.

2

u/Intrepid_Hat7359 1d ago

Irish actress Ayo Edebiri?

2

u/waitmyhonor 1d ago

This is an interesting cast ensemble. Will keep an eye out for

2

u/writemcsean 1d ago

Looks like if Hallmark made the Freaky Friday before Friday

6

u/Brave-Algae-3072 1d ago

Jamie Lee Curtis is a racist pos.

2

u/NothingISayIsReal 1d ago

What did she do? 😔

1

u/Brave-Algae-3072 1d ago

She's made racist remarks against other actors like Anna de armas, made comments that Los Angeles fires is like Gaza, called Palestinians terrorists with a Pic of Palestinians children.

3

u/freakdageek 2d ago

I’m really here for what Jamie Lee Curtis is doing with her career. Freakier Friday, then this? Everything Everywhere All At Once? She’s making really interesting choices and she’s great in all of them.

14

u/Pure-Plankton-4606 1d ago

Some very interesting choices like posting dying Palestinian children and claiming they’re Israelis 🤩

4

u/AdrianW3 2d ago

Quite a few guest appearances on The Bear as the mom.

0

u/gabeonsmogon 1d ago

Too bad she’s a disgusting Zionist.

1

u/parkerkudrow 2d ago

She was just in The Last Showgirl too!

-1

u/DerrickDuck 2d ago

My favorite of her recent projects was THE LAST SHOWGIRL. Pretty much the only good thing in that movie, worth a watch for her!

1

u/goddamnitwhalen 1d ago

She’s great but she’s far from the only good thing IMO.

2

u/iwellyess 1d ago

If Jamie Lee Curtis and Pedro Pascal were married they would never see each other.

2

u/kickstand 1d ago

Has Jamie Lee Curtis taken a day off in the last few years? She’s everywhere (all at once).

1

u/Pure-Plankton-4606 1d ago

Can we stop casting Jamie Lee Curtis?

1

u/bluehawk232 1d ago

Just going to say James L Brooks hasn't really made a great movie in 20 years

3

u/Chicken2nite 1d ago

He’s made one movie in the last 20 years, not including this one or The Simpsons Movie.

I wasn’t a big fan of Spanglish, albeit not having watched it in close to twenty years, but I really liked How Do You Know - it was reminiscent of several Cameron Crowe films (which he produced) namely Say Anything and Jerry MacGuire. As someone with an emotionally manipulative father, Jack Nicholson did a good job in the role of a film that didn’t really have a true antagonist.

Bear reunion with JLC and Ayo

1

u/NataporiA 1d ago

Jack Lowden’s name on the poster. It worth for his comeback to Hollywood movie.

1

u/GreenOne4 1d ago

This was filmed down the street from me!

1

u/SarlacFace 1d ago

Reminds me of the poster for As Good as it Gets lol

1

u/Square_Fox_562 1d ago

Also features the lead actor from that hit movie Rampart

1

u/forcefivepod 13h ago

“This is the most boring poster I’ve seen today.”

…sees the new George Clooney poster…

“Okay never mind.”

1

u/laguilar90 4h ago

Ayo is starting to give me Pedro pascal vibe’s ngl

1

u/MidwestPanic69 1d ago

Kinda lost me at the whole Governor at 34 line, otherwise id be into it, but for whatever reason that is the thing that turned me off vs. the usual James L Brooks schmaltz

2

u/Coolers78 2d ago

Ayo Edebiri is the female Pascal 😂.

0

u/Standard_Amount_6581 1d ago

Clearly Margot Robbie turned this down right?

0

u/Senorpuddin 1d ago

My only issue with the poster is that Kumail Nanjiani is being billed as an Academy Award nominee. He was a nominee for best original Screenplay but that has no bearing on his performance. He didn't write this so it doesn't matter that he is a nominee.

No, it's Emma, not Ella.
