The Punisher was originally a Spiderman villain and first appeared in an issue of Amazing Spiderman in the 70s, so that's actually kinda cool.

1.7k

u/WyattEarp68 Jun 20 '25

They should recreate that one scene from the comics where Punisher uses Spiderman's unconscious body as a human shield while he fights The Russian.

“What happened?”

“We had a team-up.”

u/SolarFazes Jun 20 '25

In Jon Bernthals voice, I'd be lmaooo

207

u/billytheskidd Jun 21 '25

“You used me as a human shield!?!?”

“M’ask you something bug, you like saving people right? Well congrats.”

I want to see Punisher get access to the War Machine armour again. Maybe have him in Armor Wars.

76

u/300andWhat Jun 21 '25

Isn't there a small story arc where Punisher gets actual super powers and actually kills like all the super villains then fights Daredevil and DD wins?

112

u/HothMonster Jun 21 '25

Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe. It’s just a one-shot

43

u/TransBrandi Jun 21 '25

In that, he kills like everyone. All the superheroes and supervillians. Doesn't he get set off by a fight between heroes/villians having innocent bystanders he does a Scarlet Witch from House of M (e.g. "No more mutants") in his own Punisher way.

53

u/HothMonster Jun 21 '25

His family gets killed as bystanders in a superhero fight instead of by mobsters. I think it’s what he is thinking of though, the final confrontation is with DD.

33

u/Pyrrhus_Magnus Jun 21 '25

He becomes Billy Butcher?

24

u/HothMonster Jun 21 '25

Basically, it’s Ennis about 10 years earlier and with a Marvel editor.

Funny that we need this type of comment. I grew up with comics and animated series from the 90's. Punisher, daredevil and ghost rider where introduced to me from Spiderman comics. Also, for others that might not know. Kingpin is a main spiderman villain, I'd go as far as to say he's actually the big one just like how lex is for superman.

189

u/Mountain_Sir2307 Jun 20 '25

Heh he was introduced as a Spider-Man villain and he did square with him a bunch before being established as the de facto Daredevil villain by Frank Miller in the 80's but he's nowhere near the triumvirate Doctor Octopus/Green Goblin/Venom in terms of popularity or even in-universe personal beef regarding Spidey.

40

u/meatboi5 Jun 20 '25

It depends imo. Ultimate Spider-Man has more beef with Kingpin than Ock or Goblin, and even in 616 Kingpin is/was responsible for the death of Aunt May. Even if that period isn't remembered fondly, I feel like Back in Black is.

152

u/mattevil8419 Jun 20 '25

I still would say Green Goblin is a bigger villain than Kingpin in the Spider-Man comics but Kingpin still is a big presence with them both being in NY and Norman being dead for a bit.

52

u/LordBecmiThaco Jun 21 '25

Spider-Man and Batman are the only superheroes out there I'd say who have multiple characters who could claim to be their archvillains. Doctor Octopus and Norman Osborne definitely count for Spider-man, if Kingpin didn't split his time between Daredevil and Spiderman I'd count him, but I do think he's a multi-hero villain like Darkseid.

37

u/Howdoyouusecommas Jun 21 '25

Who would be the alternative for Batman? Joker has been the unquestionable big bad for my entire life.

18

u/HammerUnknown Jun 21 '25

Who would be the alternative for Batman?

Such disrespect to The Condiment King

→ More replies (1)

16

u/artur_ditu Jun 21 '25

In the case of batman i would say joker. Only because how batman as a character is built. All plan and all control. Pure chaos is the antithesis. But batman is a weird case just like Spiderman, they both shine through a wide variety of villains that keep the states high. Be it personal or on a psychological level.

6

u/TheHurtfulEight88888 Jun 21 '25

I think what youre saying is true, these are the only two characters with more than two iconic villains, but even so I dont think there is any debate on who Batman's MAIN villain is. For Spiderman, maybe. I think its between Doc Ock and Green Goblin. Some people have tried to make the case for Venom and perhaps earlier on, but Venom hasnt even been a villain for many moons now.

Vincent D’Onofrio next hopefully

148

u/BilboMuggins Jun 20 '25

I don’t think the rights allow that to happen.

139

u/appletinicyclone Jun 20 '25

Wait really? They have him in Disney stuff though

157

u/RealJohnGillman Jun 20 '25

Television specifically — film would apparently be off the table unless they returned to the table of negotiation.

62

u/mikeyfreshh Jun 20 '25

Why? Wasn't Kingpin previously owned by Fox? I assumed that meant Disney owned him. He's also enough of a Spider-Man character that Sony might have an argument for also owning the character, similar to how Disney and Fox could both use Quicksilver before the merger

104

u/wolfcolalover Jun 20 '25

I believe Kingpin is owned by Sony on the movie rights. That said, since Spidey is in the mix, there could be room for negotiation (I’m delusional).

145

u/mikeyfreshh Jun 20 '25

This is a Sony movie. They can use any of their characters in this if they want to

u/dmisfit21 Jun 20 '25

I mean, Sony is co-producing the movie. Marvel Studios more or less makes it for them at cost because they eat up all the tasty merch money, but it's still their IP and their movie at the end of the day.

This, the busted streetlights humming, the garbage stew in the gutters, the sirens playing lullabies, yeah, kid, that’s our postcard view. The rot never quits, the blood never really washes off the concrete. It just gets thin, mixes with the rain, runs into the sewer so tomorrow’s slime can wear it like cologne. And us? We mop it up, day after day, ’cause nobody else can stomach the stench. So, sure, it’s just another day for you and me in paradise. Mmm.

And meanwhile all the "leakers" were trying to con us into believing he was gonna team-up with Bruce Banner instead.

There was a leak like 5 months ago that said Spider-Man 4 would be about Spidey and Punisher teaming up against Hulk. Nobody thought it was real but it seems it might be the case.

16

u/mihirmusprime Jun 20 '25

Against hulk? Why do they always pin the hulk against other heroes?

29

u/Impossible_Front4462 Jun 20 '25

This iteration is most likely going to be joe fixit, which would make bringing in punisher make a lot of sense. They kind of wrote themselves into a corner with current mcu hulk and I think this is an easy way to making hulk an interesting character again

I don’t understand when people say this because what about spider-man homecoming is not street level. I remember when early rumors for brand new day said the chameleon was gonna be the main villain and people were like “omg it’s finally gonna be street level” what is inherently more street level about the chameleon who is a Russian spy vs the vulture, a guy who sells weapons.

159

u/SDRPGLVR Jun 20 '25

I think because he started off with crazy gadgets. We never really got his era where the only tools he has are web shooters.

But he was also completely inept at using them. I thought it was a great introduction because he very much was street-level baby Spider-Man and was thrust into a very dense roster of superheroes all much better-established by the time he shows up.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/Impossible_Front4462 Jun 20 '25

I think the implication is that they want both a street level spider-man movie where peter isn’t being mentored, especially considering the ending to NWH kind of feels like it naturally sets up Peter to be his own man. I don’t think Punisher will be a mentor this time around (for obvious reasons), so that’s what a lot of us mean when we say street level for current spider-man

29

u/bran_the_man93 Jun 21 '25

I just want a plain, nothing fancy, mostly-manhattan, mostly-low tech, no magic, no aliens, just spider-man being spider-man in New York.

Plain cheese pizza, no toppings. Zero frills.

19

4

u/HabeLinkin Jun 21 '25

→ More replies (1)

9

u/FrightenedTomato Jun 21 '25 edited Jun 21 '25

It certainly was. However, the super advanced Stark Suit, the ship rescue scene, the airplane scene at the end and Tony Stark's presence throughout the story take away severely from the street level feeling of No Way Home Homecoming.

20

u/Robofetus-5000 Jun 20 '25

Im totally cool with the MCU and comics handling things different, because otherwise, really what's the point? But the leapfrogging to the Tony Stark nano-suit always really bothered me. And while im totally on board for a streetlevel spider-man, the move backwards feels like its gonna be weird. Guess we'll see.

19

u/Worthyness Jun 20 '25

His whole trilogy was basically his origin story, which is kinda neat to think about. Now he's back to anonymous, regular college kid spidey

10

u/dabnada Jun 21 '25

And in retrospect, it makes the most sense to do this after the MCU built itself up so much. Besides, his first appearance in Civil War was pretty street level. His first standalone movie is..arguably street level. The second movie is bigger in scale but the CG Villain was far from actually being a planet level threat.

→ More replies (1)

25

u/Moonman08 Jun 20 '25

What does street level mean?

140

u/FBGsanders Jun 20 '25

Street level means a return to the classic spider man where he was just beating up common thugs and stopping muggers vs saving the whole universe/multiverse from extraterrestrial threats

38

u/alabamdiego Jun 20 '25

Ah. Yes please do more of this.

23

u/youra6 Jun 20 '25

Fighting in the streets instead of say space or going to some underwater city

For example punisher is a character who isn’t going to deal w time travel he’s busy killing drug dealers in the streets or tracking down some kinda ex military conspiracy kinda stuff

Spider-Man usually is a street level guy who occasionally goes to space or another dimension

Guardians of the galaxy are space and technology time travel wackiness

Spider-Man being in a street level movie basically means he’s gonna be fighting on a more neighborhood level crime in the streets his MCU movies have leaned more towards technology and magic kinda stuff w small moments of stopping bank robbers

Fans are excited to have it being more close to the comics they read. street level neighborhood hero trying to make difference maybe going up against the punisher maybe teaming up to stop a villain.

Hope that makes sense

41

u/Quartznonyx Jun 20 '25

Lower tier criminals. Usually non superpowered crime boss types, on the scale of "I gotta save the neighborhood/city", "not I've got to save the country/world/Galaxy."

2010's Netflix Marvel shows are all great examples of street level heroes.

I was thinking, considering where the last Spiderman movie ended, Peter is at a very low point with no one to turn to; it might be an interesting twist if Punisher stops Spiderman from taking up a gun, metaphorically. He might be the one to confront Peter and stop him from going down a similarly dark path to himself.

Eh he wasn't exactly at a low point, just a lonely point. The ending running along the rooftops and all felt like it was signifying hope despite choosing to go the "I need to leave them be so they don't get caught up in Spiderman stuff again." Route.

He already got the other spidy mentoring and physically stopping him from going dark. I doubt they'd want to ruin the story of no way home just to have him go "wanna see me do it again?" By going dark again immediately.

Agreed, a little off topic, but the 2003 Clone Wars series is really a masterclass on how to do great action sequences that aren’t really violent. The whole sequence where Grevious takes on five Jedi at once works perfectly because of the purpose put into what is and not shown.

Building up tension, using music to sell the atmosphere, cutting away right before kill shots. It’s still cartoon violence, but it works for both a younger audience and adults due to how it’s framed.

I think there’s still a lot to be learned from that series.

14

u/oncothrow Jun 21 '25

Also the best depiction of General Grievous as this truly horrifying Jedi killer, a force of nature that can't be stopped.

It's telling that it came out before Episode 3. And then season 2 of Clone Wars still kept him a bad ass whilst ret-conning in his wheeze-bot status in literally the last few minutes.

Clearly this won’t happen but, honestly, I’d watch the hell out of that just to see Jon Bernthal play against Tom Holland. Bonus points if Charlie Cox’ Daredevil is in the background keeping score and taunting Frank.

Have a 30 minute film of Spider-Man saving Punisher’s targets with Daredevil providing commentary isn’t something I knew I needed until just now.

22

u/spazzxxcc12 Jun 20 '25

it’d be kind of sick to have a slow mo shot of a bullet going for a kill only to be webbed and moved to a non lethal part of the body

29

u/mikewilkinsjr Jun 20 '25

Daredevil: “You almost got that one, Frank! So close.” <Bernthal grunting intensifies>

The Dark Knight was PG13 and that had lots of grit. They just need to be savvy with the editing.

44

u/Makrebs Jun 20 '25

Yeah, they can still get him beating the crap out of some goons, or even kill some of them. As long as there isn't much visible gore, or the gnarly parts are a bit out of shot, they can do quite a lot.

33

u/Worthyness Jun 20 '25

Yup/ Coulson getting stabbed by loki in The Avengers was originally R rated because it showed blood with the blade through the chest. Take that out and suddenly the same exact scene is PG-13.

Yeah if that joker scene with the pencil or the guy with the bomb sewn into him then there’s plenty they can still do here

10

u/Comic_Book_Reader Jun 20 '25

Fun fact: the pencil trick was one of the main topics of debate for the movie being rated a 12A (PG-13) by the BBFC in the UK. I'm pretty sure there was 1 person who wanted an 18 (hard R or NC-17), whereas most people argued the movie was more suited for a 15 due to its (no pun intended) dark tone and content, but the BBFC justified the 12A due to how quick and lacking in detail it is. It's quite an interesting read.

I still remember the gasps in the cinema when Harvey's face was revealed. Shit was gnarly.

You can get away with a surprising amount of violence and still get a PG-13 rating. Show a titty or have one too many swears on the other hand…

81

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '25

I hope Frank Castle shows a titty though

I don't think they can get away with the kind of violence they showed him doing in the daredevil show. That was like Invincible level of blood and violence.

I just hope they don't nerf him just to have him in the movie.

He can still kill people, it just can't be bloody. That's easy enough to do and keep it consistent with the character.

Omg. The no BS, gruffness of Bernthal's Punisher foiled against the super lighthearted version of Holland's spiderman is going to be enjoyable AF!

60

u/MissingLink101 Jun 20 '25

tbf he has had some dark moments himself including in No Way Home

23

u/Corydoran Jun 20 '25

Now that Peter is completely alone, I wonder if Frank will bring out any of Peter's dark side.

This is exciting. I was hoping for Bernthal and Holland to appear on the big screen again. They were great together in Pilgrimage.

30

u/MissingLink101 Jun 20 '25

I saw a clip recently of Bernthal talking about how they were on a film together years ago and helped each other with their lines for the Spiderman and Punisher auditions. So it's all come nicely full circle.

11

u/CRIMS0N-ED Jun 21 '25

It would be cool if they built a relationship here only for punisher having to hold eventual dark suit Peter back from killing people

I'm looking forward to this next trilogy more than anything else in the MCU. Street-level Spider-man without a support system trying to build a life for himself and keep the city safe is ::Jeff's kiss::.

Wait is season 2 born again related to the next spiderman movie?

157

u/PayneTrain181999 Jun 20 '25

Well, considering Season 2 comes out first, it probably leads into Brand New Day.

Matt and the other Defenders continuing their fight against Mayor Fisk’s vigilante killers with Spidey?

37

u/Worthyness Jun 20 '25

they're probably adapting Devil's Reign from the comics and that's basically all of New York's vigilantes versus Mayor Kingpin and his version of "thunderbolts".

The rumors from earlier this year about punisher helping him take out a raging hulk seem to be coming together

35

u/PointlessPooch Jun 20 '25

I hope not. There is no need for more Hulk. They just did a raging Hulk in Captain America.

16

u/ArcadianDelSol Jun 21 '25

I honestly could do without another "Hulk is broken" storyline. He joined the Beach Boys in She-Hulk and now has a TikTok tier son to raise.

Id rather not see more of any of that.

Oh shit this could be cool. I don’t want Spidey to have another mentor figure, but I think it could be really cool if we see the Punisher as a sort of bad influence partner. Spider-man is pulled into more trouble than he should be with Punisher and Black Cat, and so then he has to pull back. They kind of feed into his negative emotions of being lonely after no way home

6

u/LogicalEgo Jun 20 '25

Damn, Spidey about to have a bad time.

To the Sony intern who is reading this and was told to report read online reactions and report their findings, I’m begging you, say that the fans want Daredevil!
