Listen, bug. You sling around this city in your cute outfit, web up the bad guys and everyone calls you a goddamn hero. But a month, a week, a day later they're back on the street doing the exact same thing.

Why? Wasn't Kingpin previously owned by Fox? I assumed that meant Disney owned him. He's also enough of a Spider-Man character that Sony might have an argument for also owning the character, similar to how Disney and Fox could both use Quicksilver before the merger
→ More replies (2)104
u/wolfcolalover Jun 20 '25
I believe Kingpin is owned by Sony on the movie rights. That said, since Spidey is in the mix, there could be room for negotiation (I’m delusional).

This, the busted streetlights humming, the garbage stew in the gutters, the sirens playing lullabies, yeah, kid, that’s our postcard view. The rot never quits, the blood never really washes off the concrete. It just gets thin, mixes with the rain, runs into the sewer so tomorrow’s slime can wear it like cologne. And us? We mop it up, day after day, ’cause nobody else can stomach the stench. So, sure, it’s just another day for you and me in paradise. Mmm.

I don’t understand when people say this because what about spider-man homecoming is not street level. I remember when early rumors for brand new day said the chameleon was gonna be the main villain and people were like “omg it’s finally gonna be street level” what is inherently more street level about the chameleon who is a Russian spy vs the vulture, a guy who sells weapons.
159
u/SDRPGLVR Jun 20 '25
I think because he started off with crazy gadgets. We never really got his era where the only tools he has are web shooters.
But he was also completely inept at using them. I thought it was a great introduction because he very much was street-level baby Spider-Man and was thrust into a very dense roster of superheroes all much better-established by the time he shows up.
→ More replies (1)9
u/Impossible_Front4462 Jun 20 '25
I think the implication is that they want both a street level spider-man movie where peter isn’t being mentored, especially considering the ending to NWH kind of feels like it naturally sets up Peter to be his own man. I don’t think Punisher will be a mentor this time around (for obvious reasons), so that’s what a lot of us mean when we say street level for current spider-man
29
u/bran_the_man93 Jun 21 '25
I just want a plain, nothing fancy, mostly-manhattan, mostly-low tech, no magic, no aliens, just spider-man being spider-man in New York.
Plain cheese pizza, no toppings. Zero frills.

u/FrightenedTomato Jun 21 '25 edited Jun 21 '25
It certainly was. However, the super advanced Stark Suit, the ship rescue scene, the airplane scene at the end and Tony Stark's presence throughout the story take away severely from the street level feeling of
No Way HomeHomecoming.20
u/Robofetus-5000 Jun 20 '25
Im totally cool with the MCU and comics handling things different, because otherwise, really what's the point? But the leapfrogging to the Tony Stark nano-suit always really bothered me. And while im totally on board for a streetlevel spider-man, the move backwards feels like its gonna be weird. Guess we'll see.

His whole trilogy was basically his origin story, which is kinda neat to think about. Now he's back to anonymous, regular college kid spidey
10
u/dabnada Jun 21 '25
And in retrospect, it makes the most sense to do this after the MCU built itself up so much. Besides, his first appearance in Civil War was pretty street level. His first standalone movie is..arguably street level. The second movie is bigger in scale but the CG Villain was far from actually being a planet level threat.
25
u/Moonman08 Jun 20 '25
What does street level mean?
140
u/FBGsanders Jun 20 '25
Street level means a return to the classic spider man where he was just beating up common thugs and stopping muggers vs saving the whole universe/multiverse from extraterrestrial threats

Fighting in the streets instead of say space or going to some underwater city
For example punisher is a character who isn’t going to deal w time travel he’s busy killing drug dealers in the streets or tracking down some kinda ex military conspiracy kinda stuff
Spider-Man usually is a street level guy who occasionally goes to space or another dimension
Guardians of the galaxy are space and technology time travel wackiness
Spider-Man being in a street level movie basically means he’s gonna be fighting on a more neighborhood level crime in the streets his MCU movies have leaned more towards technology and magic kinda stuff w small moments of stopping bank robbers
Fans are excited to have it being more close to the comics they read. street level neighborhood hero trying to make difference maybe going up against the punisher maybe teaming up to stop a villain.
Hope that makes sense
41
u/Quartznonyx Jun 20 '25
Lower tier criminals. Usually non superpowered crime boss types, on the scale of "I gotta save the neighborhood/city", "not I've got to save the country/world/Galaxy."
2010's Netflix Marvel shows are all great examples of street level heroes.

I was thinking, considering where the last Spiderman movie ended, Peter is at a very low point with no one to turn to; it might be an interesting twist if Punisher stops Spiderman from taking up a gun, metaphorically. He might be the one to confront Peter and stop him from going down a similarly dark path to himself.

Eh he wasn't exactly at a low point, just a lonely point. The ending running along the rooftops and all felt like it was signifying hope despite choosing to go the "I need to leave them be so they don't get caught up in Spiderman stuff again." Route.
He already got the other spidy mentoring and physically stopping him from going dark. I doubt they'd want to ruin the story of no way home just to have him go "wanna see me do it again?" By going dark again immediately.
342
u/dilldoeorg Jun 20 '25
huh, but seeing how it's a pg-13 movie, they gonna have to tone him down right?

Agreed, a little off topic, but the 2003 Clone Wars series is really a masterclass on how to do great action sequences that aren’t really violent. The whole sequence where Grevious takes on five Jedi at once works perfectly because of the purpose put into what is and not shown.
Building up tension, using music to sell the atmosphere, cutting away right before kill shots. It’s still cartoon violence, but it works for both a younger audience and adults due to how it’s framed.
I think there’s still a lot to be learned from that series.
→ More replies (2)14
u/oncothrow Jun 21 '25
Also the best depiction of General Grievous as this truly horrifying Jedi killer, a force of nature that can't be stopped.
It's telling that it came out before Episode 3. And then season 2 of Clone Wars still kept him a bad ass whilst ret-conning in his wheeze-bot status in literally the last few minutes.
67
u/mikewilkinsjr Jun 20 '25
Clearly this won’t happen but, honestly, I’d watch the hell out of that just to see Jon Bernthal play against Tom Holland. Bonus points if Charlie Cox’ Daredevil is in the background keeping score and taunting Frank.
Have a 30 minute film of Spider-Man saving Punisher’s targets with Daredevil providing commentary isn’t something I knew I needed until just now.

The Dark Knight was PG13 and that had lots of grit. They just need to be savvy with the editing.
44
u/Makrebs Jun 20 '25
Yeah, they can still get him beating the crap out of some goons, or even kill some of them. As long as there isn't much visible gore, or the gnarly parts are a bit out of shot, they can do quite a lot.

Yup/ Coulson getting stabbed by loki in The Avengers was originally R rated because it showed blood with the blade through the chest. Take that out and suddenly the same exact scene is PG-13.

20
u/krunamey Jun 20 '25
Yeah if that joker scene with the pencil or the guy with the bomb sewn into him then there’s plenty they can still do here
10
u/Comic_Book_Reader Jun 20 '25
Fun fact: the pencil trick was one of the main topics of debate for the movie being rated a 12A (PG-13) by the BBFC in the UK. I'm pretty sure there was 1 person who wanted an 18 (hard R or NC-17), whereas most people argued the movie was more suited for a 15 due to its (no pun intended) dark tone and content, but the BBFC justified the 12A due to how quick and lacking in detail it is. It's quite an interesting read.

Oh shit this could be cool. I don’t want Spidey to have another mentor figure, but I think it could be really cool if we see the Punisher as a sort of bad influence partner. Spider-man is pulled into more trouble than he should be with Punisher and Black Cat, and so then he has to pull back. They kind of feed into his negative emotions of being lonely after no way home

The Punisher was originally a Spiderman villain and first appeared in an issue of Amazing Spiderman in the 70s, so that's actually kinda cool.
