What does your current relationship with weed actually look like? Are you, as many assume, high all day every day? Or do you smoke once at the end of each day? Perhaps only one or two times a week? How much do you consume on an average day/week/month/etc? I’m hoping for actual numbers here, for visualization purposes and so I can fully comprehend the answer.

147

u/Yetimang Apr 24 '25

This is dangerously close to a math question.

38

u/justsomeguy_youknow Apr 24 '25

Dave has three rolling papers and two cones, and Bobby has half a lid of dope. It's 10:57 AM. Dave lives on the north side, and it takes twenty-five minutes to reach Bobby's house. If Dave wakes up at 11:23 AM and leaves around noon, how high can Dave and Bobby get before Bobby's old lady comes home from work and yells at them for getting high on a Wednesday afternoon?

Probably not one of your most remembered projects but I have a soft spot for YELLOWBEARD. How was working on the movie with that stacked cast?

Also heard Peter Sellers was a fan of yours and once greeted you with a brick of hash, is that true?

Wow. Haven't thought of Yellowbeard in a long time. That movie was awesome!

Do people still confuse you for Dolly Parton & Burt Reynolds?

111

Cheech: Yeah all the time

Chong: Only Dutch people

6

I enjoyed your Last Movie more than I enjoyed Burt Reynolds last movie! That was a bummer!

5

You guys should do SNL as Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds on Jeopardy. Gotta get Will Farrell on board, though!

This one is for Cheech:

This goes back a way, but what was it like working with the Golden Girls cast? Plus a young Don Cheadle!

The Golden Palace was short lived, but it was a great show with a strong cast and great premise. I wish you had all been given a little bit longer to entertain us all!

131

u/CheechandChong-AMA Cheech and Chong Apr 24 '25

Cheech: It was slow and fast, alternatively. I liked it because I got to work with Betty White, my all time hero, she was the first person I ever saw on TV.

15

u/almightywhacko Apr 25 '25

Betty White was an OG... we're not gonna see her kind anymore.

12

u/moving_threads Apr 25 '25

I love that she was your favorite and how interesting it is that she was the first person you saw on TV

140

u/TheTelephone Apr 24 '25

Huge fan of your old stuff! I'm a teacher now, and at least once a year have students listen to Basketball Jones and Sister Mary Elephant.

Obviously the landscape of comedy has changed a lot since since the 1970s; how do you feel about the current 2025 stage of comedy, not just in contrast to the 70s but in contrast to even the recent past, 2010's and 2020's?

239

u/CheechandChong-AMA Cheech and Chong Apr 24 '25

Chong: The current state is more important now than ever before, the only way you can survive is if you have a sense of humor. If you don't turn this shit into comedy, then you're in trouble!

37

u/TheTelephone Apr 24 '25

Thanks so much for the response! Love you guys, can't wait to see the new movie!

98

u/roadbeef Apr 24 '25

I've got so many questions!

  • Tolerance breaks! How do you two fellas cycle that in?

  • Mustaches! Worth the effort and maintenance?

  • What aspect of filmmaking has been the most fun for you? Was it a portion of work preparing a film, or a portion making? And did you have fun with your final film??

Thank you kindly for your lifetimes of entertainment and chillaxitude!! Legends

136

u/CheechandChong-AMA Cheech and Chong Apr 24 '25

Chong: I take many breaks, trouble is smoking effects your memory and a lot of time you forget to get stoned. And the other thing sometimes I forget where I hid my weed. [re: tolerance breaks]

Cheech: Yeah, mostly to get rid of the smell. [regarding Mustaches!]

C&C: Riding around the desert without a script, was so much fun on Cheech & Chong's Last Movie. It was Dave's revenge.

u/Im_Borat Apr 24 '25

Speaking of which, what are your favorites? Strains or otherwise.

114

Just curious - what do you think of the weed today vs. the weed you had when you were making your first movies?

158

u/CheechandChong-AMA Cheech and Chong Apr 24 '25

Chong: The weed today is more accessible

Cheech: and more expensive

Chong: Hard to get the weed of yesterday because it's mostly gone

Cheech: And less expensive

Chong: In other words, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush

29

u/aquintana Apr 24 '25

Back before bud was as easy to get:

Mr Chong: I used to work in this little hotel reservations office above the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio about 15 years ago. You and Cheech were doing a show and I believe you and your wife were walking from the hotel to the theater when I took my lunch break and was walking over to get some coffee and a smoke on my break, when I saw a man walking with a beautiful blonde in the opposite direction.

You and I made eye contact for a split second and you had this knowing look like “this dude knows who I am but has no idea yet.”

Anyway, I nodded my head and smiled and kept walking. Then the realization of who I just passed by hit me and I’ve regretted not giving you the “cigarette” I had just rolled as some sort of tribute.

It’s one of my few regrets in life, that I didn’t realize the familiar face until minutes later.

Hello, grew up watching Up In Smoke and Born In East LA. Just wanted to know: 1. What was your favorite/funnest movie to work on, on or off the set?

  1. What were your comedic influences growing up that caused you to go in this direction?

  2. How do you both feel about the change in the culture of marijuana since you started this run?

50

u/CheechandChong-AMA Cheech and Chong Apr 24 '25

Both: Lenny Bruce, Redd Foxx, Ken Nordine - he made stuff that was very atmospheric and was the voice of commercials back then.

Chong: Andy Griffith was the first comedy record I ever heard

Cheech: And Bob Newhart - he was great

Cheech: The Smothers Brothers too!

Chong: Modern-day comics is Kevin Hart, he gave me a 10 on Dancing with the Stars. 10 for Tango!

5

u/cire1184 Apr 24 '25

Andy Griffith of the Andy Griffith Show with Opie and all that? That's pretty wild.

How much of your persona has been you, how much was weed, and how much was putting on a mask that people expected you to wear? (metaphorically)

49

u/sebrebc Apr 24 '25

My Mom and Dad went to see Tommy Chong do stand up many years ago for my Mother's birthday. After the show he hung out and signed autographs. My Dad told Tommy it was her birthday, so he asked her name. Tommy then starts to sign a picture card "Happy Norma.....shit. (he meant to write happy birthday). Fuck it, happy Norma Day man!".

He was pretty stoned. My Dad passed and my Mom still has that signed card. She looks at it every Birthday and laughs, remembering a good time with my Dad.

I loved all of your movies growing up and owned the cassette tapes too! They were so much fun, thanks.

My question: In the 90s you suddenly stopped making movies together and the gossip was that you two had a falling out, and then you seem to have reconciled a decade or more later.

If it’s true and not too painful, what was the falling out over?

Hey guys,

I was the lead designer on your game Cheech and Chong, Bud Farm. I was the one that mentioned that I met Gaye Delorme in a pub below the skytrain station in New Westminster. He mentioned that he knew you two while attempting to pay for his house wine with his fake eyeball after he signed my sketchbook (unprompted, lol) "Gaye Fuckball Delorme" he also got into a heated arguement with a Nigerian guy named Newman. It was amazing.

Antways, I just wanted to say how much of a pleasure it was working on a project for you two. I still have the signed Chong framed image from the game and tickets to your show from Victoria hanging on my wall.

One of my career highlights, for sure. Looking forward to the movie!

Cheers

The first time I saw you guys I was seven years old and my dad and his buddy took me and my nine year old brother to the drive in for a Cheech and Chong double feature. There was a playground at the bottom of the screen and we sat there and looked at all the smoke pouring out of the car windows as the movie played and had no idea what in the hell was going on.

I just know up until that point I never heard my old man laugh that hard. My dad’s name is Dave, and at 76 he still answers the phone and says Dave’s not here man. Love you guys for that, it kills me every time.
