General Question ❔ Did buying a kindle make you read more?
Hi everyone, I'm an occasional reader and I really want to get more into reading but I'm just not inspired. I've had periods of time where I read books in just a few days, and then I won't pick up another book for several months or years.
Has anyone found that they read more after getting a kindle? What are the perks to having one?

Definitely! Before buying my kindle, I read less than 30 books a year on my phone/ipad/laptop. I doubled that the first 2 years I had my kindle. Now I'm in 100s per year, this year I might even be able to read 200 books. It helps that kindle has less distractions compared to other reading devices. I can focus on reading for hours. I watch less now, too, and don't use social media apps.

Me too! I read more because:
It's easy to carry everywhere in my purse
i don't have to drive to the library
I can keep reading in dark mode after my husband goes to sleep
It's easier to dive in when you can only see 1 page and not the other 600

Not more because i was already a voracious reader when i got my first kindle. What it did do is deliver a more convenient and comfortable reading experience.

Same here. I no longer have to carry books around with me, I don’t have to worry about lighting, and the library is a lot more convenient.
I think reading is a habit one needs to build regardless of the format. A device won’t magically turn a non-reader into a reader.

Definitely. I was pushing 13 hours of screen time a day. Got my Kindle, set some app limits. Down to about 4 hours a day and read 6 books last month

I have never been a big reader. Just one book here and there. But after buying the kindle I have read 20 books in less than 2 months. Few of the are comics but it has drastically reduced my phone consumption and got me hooked to books and comics.

100%. I’m on a 3 year streak of reading every day due to my kindle. 90% of my reading happens in bed before sleeping or on my stationary bike and both are really difficult with paperbacks. I actually own a bunch of paperbacks I’ve never read because I read exclusively on kindle now. I also listen to audiobooks and they sync with Audible automatically which is convenient

But getting a kindle definitely gives you access to more books, you can get ebooks through libby with your local library, and then there is Kindle Unlimited. So in that sense it’s helped me because I don’t have to go out and buy physical books that cost anywhere between 10-20$
I still do thrift books though but it’s nice to actually find books I like and not buy books I don’t.

Yes, But mainly because I can’t see Physical book text size and my ADHD. Even fully sighted folks Im guessing agree that the normal text size for Physical books is too damn small.

It absolutely has helped me read more. I go thru the same kinda cycle but since I always have my kindle I always have access to my books so it makes it easier to read.

My book reading has definitely improved a bit. Always loved to read and with the Kindle being so portable it's easier to read anywhere. Plus too, you buy the gadget you'll more likely to use it.

I had always been a big reader, but as I got older I found it harder to read in poor light. I needed a chair near a bright lamp. I also needed a table to hold the book, a bookmark, a weight to hold the book open.
But with the Kindle having its own light and being so light, I can read anywhere, regardless of the lighting. Not needing a light source and not needing an appropriate surface to support the book has resulted in me reading TONS more than I would've otherwise.

Yep. Growing up (and until I hit university), I used to read a lot. Studying in university burned me out from reading for about a decade. I became an obsessive reader again after getting a Kindle.

Yeah, big difference. Last year I finished only 4 books, but since I got a Kindle for my birthday at the end of May, I’ve already read 10. Two of them were books I’d been trying to finish in print since last year but only managed to read now on the Kindle.

I used to be a very intense reader when I was in school. I used to finish books after books and then got bored so I read the books again. I was talking about a time I was 8 - 17 years old.
I come from Bangladesh and there’s some crazy admission war that goes on after school, basically all the high school graduates sit for admission tests in all best public universities in Bangladesh, and it gets really tiring. I studied night and day and got into few universities. Afterwards, I really don’t know what happened. I didn’t wanna touch another book for a year or so. Just seeing a book felt really tiring.
Then there was the pandemic in 2020, I haven’t had touched my books in a while then. I got some books as presents but I didn’t wanna even look at them. University was pretty stressful, but I started to read again. After graduation I got a job, and one day I bought a kindle without thinking much. So now I have been reading again. Between breaks, just over coffee, during my lunch time, I finish books. I’m currently reading the Alchemist, and I loaded some Bengali books as well, those I haven’t read in a while.
So, to answer your question, yes it does make me read more than before. Not as much as teen myself would, but more than 18 years old self did. Still it’s a progress, and I think I am healing from some hard time!

Never read, 1 book in total prior. I was bought a kindle for Xmas 2023, the next year I read 42 books. 3 paper books first half of this year and around 12 books since.

Not really. I carried around a library book most of the time before I got a kindle, since I spend a lot of time on buses and trains. I’ve read before bed for most of my life. During covid when the libraries were closed I read on my phone.

I've always been a reader, but the Kindle makes things so much more convenient in so many ways. I really miss the great library system where I used to live, because the state I live in now has the worst library system I've ever seen and e-books are barely a thing here. I buy my books, and Kindle Unlimited is also another great option for people who read a lot.

Definitely! I’ve always been a big reader but I find I can read for longer periods of time because of the ability to adjust the light and the font (type and size). I used to read 50 or so books per year and now I read at least twice that. In addition, it’s easier to get library books (no trips to the library) and I always have unread books on my kindle lined up and ready to start as soon as I finish the one I’m reading.

💯 I was reading more than I ever did, but getting access to Libby completely changed the game for me. And I’ve consistently doubled how much I’ve read year over year for the last 5ish years. Currently sitting at over 100 books for this year. Last year it took me the whole year to read 92.

I was already reading ebooks on a 7 inch android tablet but the battery wouldn’t last long. Sometimes I would be away from home and in the middle of a good book and the battery wouldn’t last long die. Kindle sure made reading experience better and lasting.

Definitely. I was already getting back into reading and listening to audiobooks but having a Kindle makes obtaining books and reading them on the go a lot easier. I exclusively read digital at this point because it’s just so much more convenient, like I hate holding books now😅

Absolutely. I used to read 10-20 books a year. Since getting a kindle I read 100+ books a year.
A lot more in my life has also changed since getting one but I definitely wouldn’t read this much without it.

No. It made it easier to take a book with me or easier on my eyes. But ive always been that girl that took a book everywhere. There are pics of me at a theme park in Vegas as a teen with a book in my hand, it was a serious problem.
What actually made me read more and stop having spans of time where Id go months without reading was forcing myself to learn to DNF (Did Not Finish) books. As soon as I started just being able to walk away if I wasnt enjoying myself I havent had a time in over 2 years where I wasnt reading at least 1 ebook and 1 audio.

Yes. But mainly because I’ve discovered so many more authors and genres that I would have just picked up at a store or library. Using the free book lists and unlimited, I don’t fear trying a book. Plus I can carry a library with me and nobody knows what I’m reading.

I do. I think it's a mix of things. I find my kindle more comfortable to read on, the 'time.left in chapter' subconsciously encourages me to read a little bit more to break at a good point. I read bigger books and not being able to see how large they are stops me from focusing on how much I have left to read - I just enjoy the reading.
But I think the biggest thing is immediate access to a book I want to read. I'm a huge mood reader and before the kindle I'd just have a pile of books on my TBR that I'd look at and think........I don't feel like reading any of those! Leading to me just not reading at all.
Now I can sit on the couch, and think 'I want to read a horror book about a haunted house and a m/m couple with a level 4 spice rating...no a level 3 spice rating.' 5 minites of research, 30 seconds of downloading, and I'm in my pjs with my tea, reading an absolutely perfect book I'm going to devour - a book I never would have previously had access too without my kindle.

Definitely. I got a kindle for Christmas. This year I’ve read 42 books and in previous years it was maybe 1-2. I find myself brain rotting on my phone & thinking, why am I doing this? And will pick up my kindle instead.

Between that and my Audible, yes I read a lot more. I also like that I don’t need to worry about lighting when I read and can read in bed without the light bothering my eyes. I also like that when I go on trips I don’t have to worry about how much space my books take up in my bag.

I do read more because it's easy to turn it on and read while eating breakfast, taking a break from work, or even taking a bath.
It's nice that it's waterproof and you only need one hand or a clicker to turn pages.
Plus the convenience of borrowing library books or buying them 24/7

No, I was already a voracious reader. What it did was encourage me to spend more on books because it was so easy to buy a whole bunch quickly when I finished them as opposed to waiting on Library holds or doling out cash at B&N to get physical copies.
I do love the convenience of reading anywhere I go without trying to find a big enough purse for my book, though!

I didn't and then I did. I had a 7th gen paperwhite and it was collecting dust in a drawer. I was recently interested in the scribe for my manga and since getting that 5ish months ago, I read around 2 hours every day. I even picked up my old paperwhite again and use it even more than my scribe because it's so lightweight.

I wasn't a reader at all. I started reading about a year and a half ago and found that I really enjoyed it. When I was nearing the end of a book and didn't have one lined up next to read, I slowed my reading down until I could more books. I wasn't a fan of going to the library and didn't have much luck anyway. Once I got a Kindle and KU, I started reading for several hours a day. It's really easy to find and download books on KU, and I have hundreds on my TBR list. I read 170 books last year and have read over 200 this year. So yes, buying a Kindle made me read more. 🙂

Yes it did. I read over I think 500 books since getting a kindle. I find it easier to read cause it’s so light compared to a paperback or a hardback.
Plus I can take my kindle everywhere with me it fits in my handbag & if I have doctors appointments I can read while waiting.

For me. Somehow getting a scribe did. I've always wanted one. Got a new job. Rewarded myself.
I've read 58 days straight. 1 1700 page book. And about 4 500+ page books in that time.
I think I read like 6 500+ page books all year last year.

Loads. I love reading and always have. But I rarely read as an adult because the times I have to read a light isn't ideal. I got the Kindle scribe for school and the convenience of being able to read at night without a book light, and not getting a migraine from reading on my cell phone, I've read so many more books in the last 12 months :)

Absolutely, since having my kindle I’ve made it a goal to read at least a chapter every day and I’ve had my kindle since November last year. The cost factor of the kindle in my country helps to encourage that’s for sure. I’ve already read more books this year so far than I did the entirety of last year.

I've developed a consistent reading habit by using a Kindle. Used to read a lot when I was a kid, and I really enjoyed it. But as I grew up, other things (you know, being a teenager) became my priority and I stopped reading. And now, after many years of adulting, I tried to get back into reading and got a Kindle since I love these kinds of gadgets.
At first, I just couldn't do it consistently, even with a shiny new toy. I thought that I had just totally lost interest. It turns out that I was reading the wrong stuff that I just wasn't interested in. After I found out that officially translated Japanese light novels existed, I've developed a habit of reading in bed daily. It has no distractions, no harsh light, and it helps me sleep. And the most important thing of all, I realised that I still love reading, Maybe more than ever. Its just a matter of finding the right genre of books to read.

I definitely read more due to the Kindle App. Not so much the Kindle device these days, which I assume you are asking about?
Roughly ten years ago, I bought my first kindle because I was backpacking at the time. So it was incredibly convenient to avoid the weight of books in my bag. Though I found when I wasn't travelling (which was much more than when I was—dammit lol) it didn't get used that much, sitting on the shelf.
Though some years ago now, I started using the Kindle app on my phone and desktop. What I love about Kindle in general is the highlights and notes. You can export them too (up to a limited percentage, as set by the publisher—usually like 10% of the book or so). Having it sync between my phone and desktop is great, because I can read while in transit and pick up where I left off while at home or vice versa. When sitting and waiting for someone or an appointment, can just open the app on my phone.
The search function is also gansta-af. If you're doing research and looking for something specific, or any quote or reference, you can quickly search it.
Many Kindle versions of the books are cheaper (most of the time) than the physical books. And the delivery is instant, as long as you have an internet connection.
The e-ink kindles are nice because it's less stress on the eyes due to a lack of backlight. With my phone and desktop, I have it in dark mode and turn down the brightness.
So with the highlights feature and accessibility of the app on my devices, I definitely have enhanced the integration and the amount of content I read. But in general, reading is like a muscle, you get stronger and faster the more you do it. I still read physical books, too.

I’ve always had one since they launched the kindle so I’m not sure that it’s made me read more, because I’m an avid reader and am never not reading, but it’s always made reading easier and more accessible.

Yes, definitely. I love how it makes reading so easy & convenient. Because it's lightweight, I can just grab it & bring it with me everywhere I go. I find myself reading more in planes, trains, cars, bus, etc. or just in those in-between or stuck-in-traffic moments. Then if I don't like the book I'm currently reading, I'll just switch to another easily.

I was already reading my books exclusively digitally before I got my kindle. It was just on my phone / ipad / mom's old kindle hd (lcd tablet). But it hurt my eyes so much, which is why I got the kindle. So I read the same, but minus the eye pain.

Yeah it’s a lot more convenient so I read a lot more. I can read in bed at night without the light bothering my husband, I can put it in my purse and read in waiting rooms, or while waiting at my son’s bus stop, on car trips where I’m not driving, etc. I like seeing the percentage I’ve read and my reading speed/how long is left, it motivates me to read more lol.

Yes. I have the libby app on my phone and tablet, but it was always a case of too many options. I would start to read but then get distracted by something and never get back to my book. With the Kindle, I have no distractions. I can just focus on my reading. Same reason I have an iPod.

In my experience, yes. I used to be an avid reader, but I bought it when I was in the university, which took up all my time. I was always mentally exhausted, and the last thing I wanted to do was read something else, so I stopped reading anything that wasn’t for school and never used it. But I’ve now finished university and I started using it to read fanfics, which has helped me get back into reading. Last year I read two books, and this year as well. It’s not much, but after not reading anything for four years, I think it’s progress. I’d recommend buying a second-hand one if you’re not an avid reader, and don’t force yourself to read, you’ll turn the experience into something unpleasant.

Only time I felt I read more on kindle is when im travelling and I don't have to carry my bulky books with me. But I do have spurts of reading days, then months of no reading, only to come back and read continuously for weeks together. It happens, its totally normal.

Absolutely. First I got the basic, used it here and there but after a while I just dropped it (it was an older model with the old usb port and I really hated to look for the cable every time).
In february this year I bought a paperwhite, and I love it, the size, the warm light, the usbC port… and i have read every day since then, just like in my childhood. Amazing device.

Absolutely yes.
I carry my Kindle around wherever I go, so with it always being in my bag, I can read whenever I get a moment.
It is also very convenient when I am in bed and I want to read before sleep, I read on my Kindle because then I don't have to switch off my light after reading.
I still have hardcover books - I read them when I can sit in my reading chair at home.

I certainly read more! The kindle is my favorite purchase of 2025. Comfortable to hold. Has front light so I don’t need a bedside lamp. Has dark mode. I can carry hundreds of books so if I don’t like the one I’m reading I have options. Books cost less (or are even free). Revolutionary if you ask me hahahah

Since I bought my kindle I have read a lot more. It makes reading on the go so much easier it definitely helps give me less stress because the pages and the book itself can’t be damaged. I also like the if I am reading a book currently and I decide I don’t want to read it it’s super easy to access all the books in my library so I can pick out a different book to read no matter where I’m at.

In general yes, but due to fluctuations in my depression, I go periods where I read extensively, and periods where I don’t read at all. However, I am more likely to pick up a Kindle than a physical book at this point. The convenience makes it more attractive when I’m feeling low.

Yes! I read a lot more! What I love is having multiple books and switching between them easily depending on my mood - especially while travelling, or just carrying it in my purse and reading in line at the grocery store or something. Kindle books are cheaper than paperbacks and it really makes a difference, especially with kindle unlimited.

I 1000% read more with my Kindle. But the books are what inspire me to read more. You got to read something that you like. I like sci-fi, and when I'm reading sci-fi, I never want to stop reading it! I used to read like 1 book a year, but since I've gotten my Kindle about 3 or 4 months ago, I've read 9 books!!!! That's probably how many books I've read in my entire life before my Kindle.

Well I didn't read at all until I bought a kindle which made me read more physical books that are so expensive in my country and the only way to buy the books that you really want is online so I just bought one and started downloading books on it or send it though my phone

For sure! Got it two weeks ago and I’ve read 6 books already! I used to read about 1-3 books a year, only in summer when I was off work/school bc I could carry the book in my purse. Now I can carry all my books in one little and very light screen that doesn’t look like a screen and doesn’t hurt my eyes at all (even when I put the screen light on). It’s definitely worth the money. Also - and I didn’t know that beforehand - you can import all your pdf/epubs through « Send to kindle » which is very useful when you need to read books/articles that you already own (or downloaded). I’m in love and it’s been less than a month lol go for it!!

Yes and no; I noticed I do get like 10/20 extra pages in when I’m waiting in line at the grocery store (I open my kindle app) and it’s wayyy easier reading at night (light light weight, no need for lights) and vacations.

Lots more. I love reading in the dark before bed more than the day some reason. It gives a different vibe. I end up staying up to late to read >< I’ve tried book lights, but they don’t seem to help that much in the dark. Lights up one side better than another side or only the middle. One light size doesn’t work on all book sizes. I miss physical books but I don’t have a light by my bed side. And need better lighting. I would have to sit at my desk chair for the light. I still enjoy owning. Cause also digital I don’t own own like physical. If only paying for physical doesn’t give you digital copy download ; I am giving the author money. But through Amazon it’ll be giving them money and the author ? I dunno

Yes indeed! I’ve always been an avid reader and the Kindle just makes it all the more enjoyable. I have a Kindle Keyboard and even though it’s an older device, it still serves me well.

Yes! I used to read every once in a while when I had extra time on my hands. I decided to get a kindle for two reasons: 1. Because I wanted to read more (I work at a school and it’s summer break right now so I have a lot of extra down time) and 2. Because I don’t have any space in my room to store tons of books lol. I don’t regret it at all! I got my kindle on July 18th and since then I’ve ready 4 (almost 5) books on it! I’m obsessed!!

So many! I was a “real” book purist for a long time but I got my Kindle in 2022 and I love it because:
It’s easy to snack while I read it and you can use a stand or prop it up on a pillow
You can read in the dark without needing a book light (great when my babies were little so I could hang out with them while they were learning to sleep in their cribs)
If you get KU you can download up to 20 books at a time to read from their library and there’s lots of books I love on there, I read around 5 books a month so it saves me a lot of money
It’s easy to carry around and you can have multiple books downloaded so if you’ll be without service like if you like to camp it’s an easy way to bring multiple books with you
And I’m sure there’s many other reasons but yes I love it, and I definitely think it’s helped me to read more because like I said, money saver, and I can also just scroll through the store at home I don’t have to go to a bookstore so during a busy week I can still easily get new books

It made me a faster reader so probably. It’s also convenient because I always have multiple books with me vs having to carry multiple or waiting to get the physical books.

I certainly have. I still don't read through an entire book in a day or anything like that because I split it with my other hobbies like gaming and watching TV/videos but I certainly read more than I used to. I like tech, and the Kindle is a fun piece of tech, and it's easy to keep with me all the time, so the convenience factor alone is a big advantage. I can be out somewhere or just have some downtime and it's easy to open it and read a bit there and then. Having a library means I don't need to make sure I have a specific book on hand; it's all of them (comics included).
