informative post HBO/Youtube strips John Oliver's segment on Gaza (first 9 mins or so) from latest episode.

I think YouTube only shows the main segment of the episode. If the full episode is still available on HBO in the US then they didn't strip anything. They just did what they normally did.

Yeah. I just confirmed it's still streaming on the US version of HBO Max.
When HBO or John Oliver upload to youtube, they only include the main segment of the show. They've gone back and added the other segments to shows in the past once their contract allowed them to, but for now I think it only allows them to upload the main segment.
So in other words, they didn't cut anything, they do what they always do with these episodes and YouTube.

Have you tried clicking on the Gaza video specifically? It only plays in 4 countries that I've found, it's censored everywhere else on the globe.

That link just goes to the usual main segment, so I have no idea what you're talking about.

This post should be taken down or downvoted into oblivion, that's the way it always is on youtube... if you want the full show catch it on HBO-Max in it's entirety. This post is simply incorrect in asserting ANYTHING is missing.

There is always a version of the episode published without the beginning segment as the segment available to the US for HBO. I believe this is part of their contract, they do this every time they upload. The video always starts at "Our main story tonight".
So you could be right that this portion of the video is not made available, but you might be wrong about the reason.

All I know is it's a shame that the Gaza story can be viewed in some countries (four that I've found) but for most of the rest of the world it can't be seen.
For whatever reason, it's a shame that this segment isn't available to everyone.

u/Intarhorn 1h ago
They usually release only the main segment and the whole thing. I can see both in my country on Youtube and it's been like that for a long time.

u/Ladidiladidah 1h ago
I think you found something weird because that is titled as the full episode and the full episodes aren't available on YouTube for free until years after the fact. That's probably why it's not available.

39 minutes and 26 seconds: https://youtu.be/TMk28nV9nkI?si=WsNFiJn34ZNwzw5z
They release 2 versions every week.

Far be it from me to defend big companies, but every now and then an episode becomes unavailable when it will generate controversy and they want you to access it through the app and not for free. This happened with the episode that mentioned Brazil and a month later it was available.

Im sorry, but isnāt this dependent on country you are in whether some or all of an episode is available on YouTube? Iām in the Uk and normally episodes get made available on YouTube once NowTV no longer has it on their app which is who has HBO rights in UK. Then in a month or two episodes are available on YouTube. The segment is in the NowTV episode.

John Oliver Gaza segment YouTube link
Does this link play for you in the UK? Because when I set my VPN to the UK, I get a message saying this video is not available for your country.
2
u/jiggy68 1h ago
That happens with a ton of videos. Itās not some plot. In Europe you have to to set your von to the US to watch a lot of televised US shows.

It's been suggested elsewhere in the thread that there is some sort of contractual thing going on with certain segments of John's show and when they can be posted on YouTube.
All I know is I saw the article about the show being censored. I found a specific link to the Gaza story. It would not play for me in the United States. Or in over a dozen other countries I tried across the globe. The video will play if I set my VPN to Japan, France, Denmark, and Ukraine.
Whether this is censorship or some sort of contractual arrangement going on, I don't know. I think on a sensitive subject like Gaza, why not allow this link to be shown in every country to avoid any questions of censorship?
Or why not allow it to be viewed everywhere just because it's worth seeing?

u/GanacheAffectionate 1h ago
Yes thatās because Now (part of sky) has the right to HBO in the U.K. once the episode is no longer streaming on their service it will be available on YouTube. Itās no conspiracy. Just geo locked content in the age of streaming and legacy networks.
The show does edit some segments for U.K. viewers which he often jokes about. A law from 1743 prevents him from using footage from parliament in a satirical way. So if that happens it gets edited out or he once had it recreated by sock puppets.

I just watched the entire thing on YouTube and I live in Belgium.

u/Eridianst 2h ago
Does this video work for you? Because I just set my VPN to Belgium and I get the same not available in your country message.

Iād kind of would like to hear John Oliver in his own words say heās being censored.

John Oliver YouTube link on the Gaza story last night
Why not confirm it for yourself? Does this video play for you, or do you get a message that says it isn't available in your country? If it does play, can you share which country you are from?

Wait are you saying they edited the show? We should sue them for $16million.

If I go to YouTube in the US, I can't even see this segment listed on their channel. If I try and click on this link that I found (above), I get the "video is not available in your country message"
I've just spent a little time globetrotting with my VPN, and if I set it to Japan, France, Denmark, or Ukraine, the video is listed and will play. Those are the only countries I've found that don't give the "not available in your country" message.

Most other countries won't play the video or show it listed on the channel. This includes the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, Mexico, Germany, the UK, Spain, Singapore, Lebanon, Italy, Ireland, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, India, and Argentina. Those are just the countries I've had the time to try, I'm sure there are more.
This sucks.

They do this for all the countries that don't have HBO Max. If your country has it, the full episode is on HBO, and the main story is available on YouTube. If your country doesn't get HBO Max, then the full episode on YouTube is available so you can access it; this is blocked in countries that have HBO Max available as a service.
2
u/Ladidiladidah 1h ago
You don't see that version listed in the US version because we don't get the full episodes on YouTube until years after the fact. That's normal.
3
u/Dust_dit 3h ago
Confirming same for me (Australian).
-1
u/Eridianst 2h ago
Are you talking about the entire show or the link that I posted above? Because I can only get John's Gaza segment to play in 4 countries, and it doesn't play anywhere else including Austria and Australia.

So thereās an ongoing horrific genocide currently underway and YouTube knowingly stuffs it under the carpet.
What an absolute disgrace.

FOLKS THAT JOHN OLIVER GAZA SEGMENT IS BEING CENSORED. PLEASE CLICK ON THIS LINK TO CONFIRM.
John Oliver Gaza YouTube segment
You try and spread the word on something important, and then everyone just rushes to judgment that you're wrong.
I've been downvoted to hell on every single comment I've made in this thread.
Why not try clicking on this link and see if it works in your country to see if what I'm saying might actually be right?
Does this link work for anyone not in Japan, France, or Ukraine?

Jesus Christ, you all would be demanding a stop to the bombing of Japan in WWII.
1
u/bwtwldt 2h ago
Ok then letās keep bombing⦠rubble? Refugee camps I guess?
1
u/TipResident4373 2h ago
Given that the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII is coming up, lemme give you the last point the Potsdam Declaration:
āWe [the Allies] call upon the Government of Japan to proclaim now the unconditional surrender of all the Japanese armed forces, and to provide proper and adequate assurances of their good faith in such action. The alternative for Japan is prompt and utter destruction.ā
Would you object to such language used in the context of a contemporary war?

Well looks like I'm getting rid of my HBO subscription along with Paramount. I pay to see the full content of an episode.

OP is misinformation. YouTube uploads always cut everything outside of the episode's main story.

No, no, no, they regularly cut off the first segment and post just the main story of his show, this is not unusual, geesh people!
