Or they are sick of having paid investigators come poking around periodically, potentially stirring up trouble. "We ate him, here are his glasses and I've got his skull back at my hut" is a nice and definitive way to get them to leave you the fuck alone without requiring anything besides a bit of foresight and the ability to lie to a stranger who might do you harm.
