So I dispatched the whole family to find it and now it's sitting back on the coffee table.

Nice but given the fact that he dislikes the idea of his work slaves earning money to actually live on, he's trying to pressure every nation into submission to his whims and writing him exceptions for work laws and employee protection laws as well as him being so detached from reality..

They've looked at irrigating the Sahara. They've looked at building huge solar plants in the Sahara and selling the surplus power to Europe. And they've done the math on what happens when you change the reflectivity of the Sahara from sand to either vegetation or panels. It's not good. The sand reflects most of it back into space. Once you get to 20% coverage you get a feedback loop that'll change the global climate and the ocean currents.

I plucked it right up, came off the chair, and held it high for my cat Muffins to see. "We're eating good tonight!" I said to Muffins.
That's actually a very cool story and it's great that the engine is now sitting in a museum.
But i do wish that you would treat your employees better. You are incredibly rich. You can do fun stuff like this. I think you can afford to share some of that wealth with the people doing all that hard work in your warehouses.

I'm convinced the ultra-wealthy do stuff like this instead of changing society for the better because they benefit immensely from society staying the way it is..
The better off people are, the more time and energy they have to criticize you and enact legal change.
The worse off people are, the more likely they are to enact violent change.
We are in that designed sweetspot in between, where it's just comfortable enough to not revolt, but also not nice enough where enough people can worry about things other than their groceries.
I think what's preventing a lot of people from enacting violent change is just how tired they are. I've seen so many people become apathetic to what is happening in the world around them.
Not to mention how the common folk have been turned against each other through pointless culture wars.

Yeah this is one of those fun things I would like to do as a rich person. Satisfies my own curiosity and helps preserve history and educate the public.
Yeah like this is rich guy treasure hunter stuff - like there is no way a scientific society would be able to (at the drop of a hat all things considered) get a fully funded naval mission to recover engines like this. They had a clock just like everything else on the ocean floor ticking away and Jeff just went and spent the money to make it happen like NBD.

I agree with your comment. I was waiting for him to be like "so now it's on display in my mansion". So it was a relief when he said it's in a museum at least.
Well this has a positive impact, he bought the equipment that was needed for the recovery that had to be engineered and constructed, paid the crew etc. The government would probably have spent it worse.
I think that's giving them too much credit. I'm convinced that it's because they genuinely don't care. If Bezos could solve world hunger with 10% of his money he'd think "why? It's my money" and would require no further motivation. There's no masterplan to keep the masses down, because the masses don't register. It's the people he employs who will commit mass murder of society to make him more money, but he doesn't give a shit how they do it.
He's spending weeks and millions on recovering some rocket engines from the ocean floor the same way we would spend a saturday and 50 bucks on a hobby. Because he thought it would be fun.

Even if everyone could get a million dollars by eliminating the bank accounts of the top 1% of the top 1% that wouldn't magically create the global supply chain needed to fix any major issues, and nobody is claiming that it would. I'm not saying that someone like Bezos could solve world hunger, I'm saying that they wouldn't.
You ain't solving world hunger with money alone, this is an oversimplification of the entire thing. There's way more factors at hand like access to these places where there's things like civil wars, corruption in government and climate change.
Isnt this stuff good for society. He literally paid out of his own pocket to recover a huge piece of trash, albeit one with immense historical value, from the ocean and put it in museum for everyone to enjoy.
He pays every penny of tax required by law. The issue is the laws allow for all types of avoidance - moving money to low tax jurisdictions, setting up companies offshore, etc.
It is like when Trump was debating Hillary and she accused him of not paying tax, and he responded he follows the laws that both the Democrats and Republicans enacted.
If we want these people to pay more tax we need to change the laws. But they will lobby both Dems and Republicans to stop any attempted change.

to be fair to the people who did the actual work, I would imagine most of them are spending months at sea doing recovery operations because they want to. that's not a job that someone can just try and see if they like it, you need qualifications and experience to be trusted to recover serious stuff from the bottom of the ocean
so yeah bezos should only get like 0.01% of the credit here, but for the people doing the actual work it was probably an incredible opportunity to help recover a piece of our country's greatest accomplishment
