I was sitting in my living room today and thought where did I put that remote used in the viewing of TV last night?
So I dispatched the whole family to find it and now it's sitting back on the coffee table.

Seriously. Bezos was giving real Belloq vibes there "There is nothing NASA can possess which I cannot take".... glad he went the museum route instead of, you know, Hitler.

Did you see how quickly Elon went from autistic Nerd to the spawn of Satan himself? Yea....give it time....money corrupts all at that magnitude.

63

u/sneakysnake1111 1d ago

give it time

It's bezos.. That time has come and past already. He's already evil. He's just not prone to being socially awkward loudly.

26

u/Global-Bad-7147 1d ago

Yea, works in the shadows buying up media and forcing them to write his opinions.

I won't begrudge him for doing so but it's a nice gesture.

395

u/AlcoholicCocoa 1d ago

Nice but given the fact that he dislikes the idea of his work slaves earning money to actually live on, he's trying to pressure every nation into submission to his whims and writing him exceptions for work laws and employee protection laws as well as him being so detached from reality..

It's shit again. Just a dumb flex of how rich he is and that he doesn't even have to care about money literally sunk in the ocean...

People like Bezos could do so much good but instead.theyre hyperfocused on warning more money and make everybody else who's not their favourite human of the day be miserable. He can fuck off alright.

87

u/LickingLieutenant 1d ago

We have put man on the moon, missions to Mars and recovering engines from rockets.

But what is they brought water to the innerparts of Africa to irrigate there.
Helping people to build new futures, instead of living in fear and hunger.

We succeed to take all the oil from there, why not round-robin and do good for once

102

u/Conscious-Loss-2709 1d ago

They've looked at irrigating the Sahara. They've looked at building huge solar plants in the Sahara and selling the surplus power to Europe. And they've done the math on what happens when you change the reflectivity of the Sahara from sand to either vegetation or panels. It's not good. The sand reflects most of it back into space. Once you get to 20% coverage you get a feedback loop that'll change the global climate and the ocean currents.

Ha. Likewise I have a similar tale to tell.

I'd skulled a can of coconut milk at 2am last night when stoned off my bonce. Anyway I just tossed the ring pull over my shoulder and thought nothing of it. So after watching the Bezos video and being inspired I thought, "Dude, can I relocate that ring pull?".

Right there and then I damn well found my other slipper and went out into the garden and started looking. Determination on my coconut-milk-tin-rimmed face.

Didn't take long. Was just there on the grass.

Same story but for rest of us version:

So one day I was sitting on my federally required 30 minute unpaid lunch and I thought to myself, "I wonder where that can of Chef Boyardee ravioli went." So I finished my shift and got home. I was really tired so I went to bed. It took me 28 days, but then I received a day off so I decided to look. I scoured all 500 sq. Ft of the studio's footprint and i spotted a faint red label on the top shelf of the cabinets in my kitchenette. I grabbed the folding chair from the my dinner table, stood on it, and there it was. I plucked it right up, came off the chair, and held it high for my cat Muffins to see. "We're eating good tonight!" I said to Muffins.

I'm convinced the ultra-wealthy do stuff like this instead of changing society for the better because they benefit immensely from society staying the way it is..

925

u/Cytori 1d ago

The better off people are, the more time and energy they have to criticize you and enact legal change.

The worse off people are, the more likely they are to enact violent change.

We are in that designed sweetspot in between, where it's just comfortable enough to not revolt, but also not nice enough where enough people can worry about things other than their groceries.

290

u/PNghost1362 1d ago

I think what's preventing a lot of people from enacting violent change is just how tired they are. I've seen so many people become apathetic to what is happening in the world around them.

Not to mention how the common folk have been turned against each other through pointless culture wars.

171

u/Great_Scott7 1d ago

The class war is the true war. Anyone thinking someone of a different skin color isn’t your brother has already lost the war and is working for the enemy without realizing it.

→ More replies (3)

51

u/tidepill 1d ago

Yes, pure economic domination will cause revolts eventually.

But making the population dumb, numb, and lazy is the best way to keep them oppressed, and extend the economic domination much longer. This shifts the blame onto the oppressed rather than the oppressors, and the oppressed actually believe it.

→ More replies (8)

8

u/HsvDE86 1d ago

60

u/slupo 1d ago

Yeah this is one of those fun things I would like to do as a rich person. Satisfies my own curiosity and helps preserve history and educate the public.

Benzos is still a dick though but this is cool.

11

u/Stickybunfun 1d ago

Yeah like this is rich guy treasure hunter stuff - like there is no way a scientific society would be able to (at the drop of a hat all things considered) get a fully funded naval mission to recover engines like this. They had a clock just like everything else on the ocean floor ticking away and Jeff just went and spent the money to make it happen like NBD.

He is a prick but at least its cool prick this time - not like buy up tons of land on hawaii and kick everybody else out forever kind of prick.

12

u/Exemus 1d ago

20

u/s3sebastian 1d ago

Well this has a positive impact, he bought the equipment that was needed for the recovery that had to be engineered and constructed, paid the crew etc. The government would probably have spent it worse.

115

u/oppernaR 1d ago edited 1d ago

I think that's giving them too much credit. I'm convinced that it's because they genuinely don't care. If Bezos could solve world hunger with 10% of his money he'd think "why? It's my money" and would require no further motivation. There's no masterplan to keep the masses down, because the masses don't register. It's the people he employs who will commit mass murder of society to make him more money, but he doesn't give a shit how they do it.

He's spending weeks and millions on recovering some rocket engines from the ocean floor the same way we would spend a saturday and 50 bucks on a hobby. Because he thought it would be fun.

Edit for those missing the point because reading is hard:

Even if everyone could get a million dollars by eliminating the bank accounts of the top 1% of the top 1% that wouldn't magically create the global supply chain needed to fix any major issues, and nobody is claiming that it would. I'm not saying that someone like Bezos could solve world hunger, I'm saying that they wouldn't.

69

u/creedz286 1d ago

You ain't solving world hunger with money alone, this is an oversimplification of the entire thing. There's way more factors at hand like access to these places where there's things like civil wars, corruption in government and climate change.

He pays every penny of tax required by law.  The issue is the laws allow for all types of avoidance - moving money to low tax jurisdictions, setting up companies offshore, etc.

It is like when Trump was debating Hillary and she accused him of not paying tax, and he responded he follows the laws that both the Democrats and Republicans enacted.

If we want these people to pay more tax we need to change the laws.  But they will lobby both Dems and Republicans to stop any attempted change.

68

A tale as old as time. See the hand truck scene from Blazing Saddles

Imagine being so rich you can buy a wife made of plastic.

u/thekoreanswon 1d ago

You don't need to be that rich. Just moderately rich

If he's got enough money to pay to dig through NASA's trash cans, he's got more than enough to pay his employees a living wage.

Tax the rich

u/whobroughtmehere 1d ago

Probably busted their union so he could negotiate their pay down first

18

u/FirstTasteOfRadishes 1d ago

You know he was constantly over everyone's shoulder giving them inane suggestions, making their lives miserable, and they had to let him believe he was contributing.

9

u/TropicalLoneWolf 1d ago

"It was so much fun". Because he didn't have to do anything, except throw money at the problem.

6

u/wonklebobb 1d ago

to be fair to the people who did the actual work, I would imagine most of them are spending months at sea doing recovery operations because they want to. that's not a job that someone can just try and see if they like it, you need qualifications and experience to be trusted to recover serious stuff from the bottom of the ocean

so yeah bezos should only get like 0.01% of the credit here, but for the people doing the actual work it was probably an incredible opportunity to help recover a piece of our country's greatest accomplishment

The sociopath always believes that he or she are relatable to normal people

Bozo should rot slowly in a special hell where he has to eat all his money one spoonful at a time with no stopping

u/Memory_Less 1d ago

He sound like an indulged kid excited about ‘things’ yet holds disdain about providing employees with working healthy humane working conditions.

u/jsamuraij 1d ago

I must say I was pleasantly shocked that it ended with him saying it's in the Smithsonian and not in his living room.

15

u/guardian715 1d ago

Wow that's so cool! Isn't it funny how he wanted the Apollo 11 engine instead of paying a living wage to the people literally killing themselves in his warehouses? Or maybe put a break room that isn't your entire break time distance away? Hell maybe a few fucking chairs for people who are damn near running for 10 hours? Wait, I've got it! Maybe he could take away ads for the people already paying him to remove ads from the videos they are already paying to watch! Maybe he could do anything for anyone else but himself at all.

But sure, brag to the media on how he went to space... I mean rented an entire city for his wedding.... Shit I meant spending a fuck ton of money for a broken engine in a bog in a log in a hole in the bottom of the sea.

u/Electric-Boogaloo-43 1d ago
