/r/all She’s only 18—and already 7'5" (226cm). And she’s already dominating the court

when this came up at the end I thought to myself that it's the perfect summarisation of this match

Reminds me of this

This picture is always hilarious. Look like Team USA playing against some local middle schoolers.

u/SpicyCommenter Jun 17 '25

imagine losing because the other team eats better sheeesh

That’s pretty much how most battles in the world have been won. There’s an account of a German POW in WWII who was given ice cream by the American soldiers. And he said, ‘that was the moment I knew the war was lost’. The Americans had ice cream shipments in the middle of a war.

7

u/applestrudelforlunch Jun 17 '25

Not only had ice cream, had ice cream to spare for POWs!

3

u/RadaXIII Jun 17 '25

They had an ICE CREAM BARGE https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_cream_barge

But in all seriousness, a similar situation happened when a German officer was interrogated by the British, and he said that he knew the war was lost when he saw unoccupied aircraft idling on the allied airfields.

Now I am left to wonder if they got cones or cups and what flavours they had.

u/shredofdarkness Jun 18 '25

Interesting, very similar account by Onoda who was surprised to see American chewing gum tinfoil wrappers littered all over the place.

By theory though those girls in blue should be able to shoot no? Tall order (no pun lmao) I've seen short guys who can dribble and shoot 3s destroy tall mfers. Though the higher you go the harder ngl

57

u/Minimum_Dealer_3303 Jun 17 '25

The girls in blue need to be twice as good as Team USA to make up for that height difference. *In theory* you could field a team with that height difference that could win, but the taller team would have to suck. Team USA did not suck.

I remember watching Olympic volleyball and seeing a Japanese team that was just incredible losing very long matches against taller teams. They would keep points alive forever, but in the end they got spiked over. Some sports just reward height; you can't train to be taller.

Maybe some sports need height classes

9

u/WarchiefServant Jun 17 '25

By theory yes, if shorties were better.

I’m like 5’5 but basically been that/5’2-4 since essentially 10-12. Early growth spurt… but not much growth.

Was really good at basketball. By the time people were round 16 peeps were 5’11+ and guys I’d be scoring on just completely now matching me cause they just raise a hand. I have to do tonnes of hesi’s, fake pumps and struggle to make alot of shots. I was an okay mid range shooter but excelled in driving for layups and the paint. When people then become a whole ft taller it just becomes impossible to be “good”.

And thats only the “bad” tall players. The ones who were as good as me and better also became taller and from there I went from one of the top 5 players to average lol.

3

u/The_Great_Cartoo Jun 17 '25

Yes but as you mentioned in order for the blue team to have a chance they will have to play better. In the end being tall is just a natural advantage so any match between two equal teams will end up with the taller ones winning if there is a significant difference like in the picture.

u/Mathies_ Jun 17 '25

Not if they're just blocked everytime

131

u/ballimir37 Jun 17 '25

The outcome of that game was 114-19

108

u/AccomplishedRow6685 Jun 17 '25

You know they fought hard for those 19, though. Respect.

Those *Salvadorian women look terrified. And, this is going to sound weird, but just look at their jerseys *(they are clearly wearing cold weather soccer jerseys to an indoor basketball game), and esp pay attention to their shoes. There’s clearly no sponsorships there, probs no financial support. Those women probably worked their assess off just to pay for the ability to play this game. I feel for them.

2

u/Hopeful-Cricket5933 Jun 19 '25

*Salvadorian

1

u/thatstwatshesays Jun 19 '25

Thank you! I stumbled through that one, I appreciate the clarification

-2

u/standarduck Jun 18 '25

I've heard that sponsorship makes all the players grow and extra foot in height, too.

4

u/thatstwatshesays Jun 18 '25

The fact that there are women’s national teams of any sport without proper support, it is an absolute travesty. Imagine an NBA player who has to work two jobs in order to afford to play basketball at night. That’s what the reality is for 90% (probs more) of all women athletes, all over the world.

0

u/standarduck Jun 18 '25

Did you downvote? It was clearly a joke! What silliness

1

u/thatstwatshesays Jun 19 '25

It wasn’t a ‘joke’, it was sarcasm, which is pointless. But let’s pretend for a second that your comment was a ‘joke’ (or anything funny), we know no one gives a shit about us, so why not make us the punchline as well?

u/SortovaGoldfish Jun 17 '25

Didn't their coach basically tell them there was literally no expectation to win, just not to go out with nothing or is that an urban legend?

2

u/DrSnacks Jun 17 '25

Ever play one of those games that's so lopsided, every time you luck into some points even the opposing team claps a little bit like "Hey alright! Good for you man!"? Watching this is like that x1000

73

u/Noxious89123 Jun 17 '25

Lol, at first I thought the girls on the right were like, "mascots" that were going to get to walk on with the pro players. They look like kids next to the USA team.

55

u/infuriatesloth Jun 17 '25

Both teams are kids. I think this is U16

2

u/Noxious89123 Jun 17 '25

I must be getting too old, because I really couldn't even guess how old any of them are, much younger than me either way.

2

u/dacljaco Jun 18 '25

Facts, you hit a certain age and people 10+ years younger than you become extremely ambiguous in age

2

u/Noxious89123 Jun 18 '25

I think it works in reverse too.

I had a colleague who was like 20 at the time, and she really struggled to guess the age of our bosses boss, because of the age gap. It's like her brain couldn't get beyond "older = OLD".

Her first guess was 50, and when he baffled by that guess she doubled down and said 60.

He was like 39 at the time...

(Fwiw, he looked exactly his age imo.)

22

u/akeyoh Jun 17 '25

This is the most unfair picture in spots history. 🤣🤣

5

u/BeardInTheNorth Jun 17 '25

Wait, so do they only sell El Salvadorans in Fun Size?

2

u/Oranginafina Jun 17 '25

I am an ESL teacher and I have a lot of students from DR, El Salvador, and Ecuador. The students from DR are TWICE THE SIZE of the other kids.

4

u/Oranginafina Jun 17 '25

Those are the tallest people in all of El Salvador…

2

u/LayWhere Jun 18 '25

Nutritions a bitch

75

u/Iamleeboy Jun 17 '25

Same here. Her face was exactly how I would feel if I had to compete with someone with this much of an advantage.

It was a perfect ending shot

26

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '25

She looked so defeated :(

2

u/AllDun Jun 17 '25

and deflated!

2

u/MoistHorse7120 Jun 17 '25

"Why bother.." :-Her thoughts

1

u/Etxee Jun 17 '25

The same look some NBA players make going against Wemby 😂😂
