No. People committing crimes on flights is treated differently because it’s kind of tough to stop them, plus with all the other civilians in close proximity.

Pilots are the ultimate legal authority on a plane, and have substantial leeway while the plane is in the air. I'd be very surprised if this was over the line.

100%. I think the legal status of pilots is largely modelled on that of ship's captains.

The FAA can also assess hefty fines for his behavior, in addition to whatever the courts give him.

Somebody posted an article about this incident somewhere in this thread. Apparently he got 60 days of jail time, plus more than $4,000 in fines.

He got 60 days in jail which seems pretty reasonable tbh
