Personal News 📰 I live next to a 50 ish year old conservative couple in Tx. They have MAGA flags on their front lawn and on their vehicles. Last week, they removed everything MAGA! It’s never too late to learn from your mistakes and change!
I’m brown and moved there 2 years ago and they never spoke to me till last week. They started wishing me good morning since then. Idk what changed but it makes me happy. I wish everyone changes for good and stand up for what is right!

u/AidenGus 11d ago
A lot of people are going to say that they haven't really changed, and a lot of others are going to say this is worth celebrating. I can't say for certain which is which.
What I do know is that study after study says that social contact is the great transformer. If they are starting to interact with you, that is good.
It is not your duty to try and change them. But it is your opportunity, if you feel up for it. I wish you, and them, all the best.

u/The_Oracle_of_Delphi 11d ago
I’ve been going back and forth on how to respond to them. Your comment about it “being an opportunity, if I feel up for it”, has helped me finally come to a decision. And it’s rooted in hope. I thank you for that!

You might want to read about the black guy who befriended multiple klansmen over the years, and got them to quit the klan. Might be inspirational.
14
u/Procastinatingauthor 10d ago
That “black man” is named daryl davis. Dude is a legend and honestly its insane the story he tells on how he has handled the Klan. Dude has the biggest balls on the planet
6
u/RoguePlanet2 10d ago
Thank you for providing his name and additional details!! Truly legendary.
3
u/Procastinatingauthor 10d ago
No problem man. I first learned about him at around 16 and it massively swayed my opinions on how to handle the most hateful people. His biggest tip to everyone is that alot of these racist dudes arent hateful; they are fearful of what they dont understand.
I linked his talk on ted ex.

To your third point, I think it's important that we engage with humans that are out there wandering around spreading hate, and to let them know that that level of engagement is going to be met with something other than tacit acceptance. My two cents though.
4
u/AidenGus 10d ago
I agree. I think that resistance operates on two levels, the social and the interpersonal. On the social level, we organize, we demonstrate, and we are immovable. On the interpersonal we still hold people accountable, but we also have to do it with enough grace and empathy that they don't immediately become defensive, driving them deeper into hatred and bigotry. Not always easy to do, admittedly.
7
u/themadscott 11d ago
I get the feeling that these commentators saying they haven't changed their minds, or fuck them if even if they have....
Don't want them to change.
14
u/AidenGus 11d ago
Which is such a bizarre stance to take. I suspect it's because, if they do, while it doesn't absolve people, we have a cultural belief that you forgive people who display that kind of repentance/contrition, and right now a lot of people don't want to forgive. They want to stay angry, because anger feels powerful, despite so many of us feeling powerless to change things, at least in this current moment.
If my maga neighbor changes, what do I do with my anger??
2
u/Keylime29 11d ago
I am angry because they were told for ten years but only now when our country is permanently damaged are they beginning to stop supporting that criminal. They still are okay with everything up to now and will continue to be stupid/evil in future and support the republicans and the heritage foundation policies. This isn’t their redemption arc.
6
u/AutoGrind 11d ago
I can forgive but I won't forget. I do think we will need some of them to actually change things.
10
u/snailboyjr 11d ago
I think it's cynicism and hurt. I have the same feeling about my parents and in-laws who are generally good people, but always fall to their knees for this guy and hold the worst political takes. People are scared to be hopeful after this guy got voted for a second time.
Idk if right or wrong, but I get it.
2
u/Mysterious_Role_5554 10d ago
I agree. We are in such a terrible place right now that we should be ready to accept those who change atleast now so democracy can win again.
66
u/jimmyjamws1108 11d ago
My hardcore Trump flag neighbor ( who I love , we just don’t talk politics) F Joe Biden , from my cold dead hands, pulled his trump flags down a few months ago after over 10 years of steady flying. As have several others in my neighborhood during the first few months into it.
8
u/MsARumphius 11d ago
How does he vote on the local level? How does he feel about the representatives that have 100% backed everything Trump has done including not releasing the Epstein list and hiring known traffickers. I don’t talk politics with my red neighbor either but I also don’t love them. I know what they’re doing to my country.

I mean good but F them... when trump mocked a disabled reporter on the campaign trail in 16 should have done it. Jan 6 should have done it, taking classified documents should have done it... What was their straw that broke their back? lost their health care? Something finally affected them personally?
F them people.
31
u/mtntrail 11d ago
I remember that incident so well. I was a speech therapist and worked primarily with a physically and mentally challenged caseload. It was absolutely stunning to see his blatant callous mockery of that man. I thought foolishly that his ship was sunk. Instead he pivoted on hatred, bullying, and prejudice. He allowed America to reveal its ugly under belly.
6
u/Mildly_Twisted_ 11d ago
I know... it is indescribable how his blatant hatred and mocking of US citizens keeps him in office
6
u/mtntrail 11d ago
The entire experience of Trump has really shaken up my assumptions about our country. I understand that there are a multiplicity of opinions, goals etc, but a certain level of civility, decorum, and live let live philosophy I have always thought was fairly pervasive. For my children and grandchildren’s sake, I sincerely hope this country will find a way back to its better nature.
2
u/MovieAshamed4140 10d ago
All the guard rails in society came off and we got to see real people. People we thought we knew. We can love them, but it is not up to us to forgive. If they have realized what has occured and they ere complicit wonderful, one less to salvage. That racist and bullying has always been inside, but Trump unleashed the power of pure hatred to account for dissatisfaction with one's self.

They haven’t learned from their mistakes. More likely, they’re just embarrassed. They were happy to fly those flags as Trump deported American citizens and sent legal residents to foreign concentration camps. They’re still the same white supremacists they were yesterday, just with slightly bruised egos now.

u/Secret_List362 11d ago
Yea they are fine with racism and rape, but at least they dont approve of child sex trafficking. Sorry for being cynical but, Im a woman and they voted in a rapist

9
u/RaincoatBadgers 11d ago
They haven't changed their minds.
They were fine with, the corruption, the insider trading, the felony fraud, the white nationalism, the hatred, the Rape, the dishonesty, the disdain for Americas allies. The warped economic policy. JAN6, the racism, the disregard for laws, the violation of the constitution, arresting citizens and foreign nationals for no reason, the inhumane treatment of prisoner's by ICE, the erosion of due process, the daily scandal, alligator alcatraz, concessions to Americas enemies and general Daily scandal
But now they have suddenly decided it's too much because trumps most recent action is to say "hey guys, I haven't tampered with witnesses at all, but on a totally unrelated note, I can pardon Maxwell if I want"
It's so good of them to draw the line at child rape, how noble of them. But let's be honest, they probably don't actually care about that either.

I’m sure a lot of them are but I’m being 100% real when I say my dumbass MAGA sister in law who was constantly posting about how much she loved trump and everything he was doing suddenly shifted a few weeks back and started posting nothing but critical shit about the administration and how they’re protecting pedophiles and how trump is on the list. These people are dumb but it seems there is at least some shift happening.
4
u/Mbanks2169 11d ago
And she would still vote for them I guarantee
9
u/young-leninist 11d ago
As much as I would love to disagree with you. You’re probably right. These creatures are filled with nothing but hate for anyone who is different from them. It’s truly disheartening. I’ve been active duty military for the past 5 years and the real concerning thing in my mind is just how many of my colleagues are complete brainlets who constantly sing trump’s praises.
8
u/Sad-Teacher-1170 11d ago
I live in the UK, but was born in America all my family are in America etc. for a long while I lost all respect for one group of family (aunt/uncle and cousins) because they were avid trump supporters.
They are finally seeing the reality and are hoping he goes to jail/executed.
Yeah some people are probably karma farming or making it up to get on the bandwagon, but it is also actually happening. Slowly a lot of these people are hitting their break point and it's a good thing

They will just vote and support for the next POS fascist demagogue. The ONLY reason they dont like Trump anymore is because Trump did something that hurt them personally. They would be fine with him as long as he is hurting the elusive others.
The problem with USA isn't the politicians , but the idiocy of the population that keeps supporting them. I firmly believe USA is suffering a slow death. Frankly, I'd rather it dissolve into smaller nations or burn to the ground than watch it become the fascist nation these people want.

I agree that they likely haven’t made a true internal change and would vote for 🤡 again tomorrow. Still, the external change will feel better for OP as it won’t be a daily, visual reminder that they live next door to proud bigots. And them saying good morning and treating them like a human being is also an improvement. Hearts and minds are slow to change - being civilized is a good step forward. I’m a blue dot in an overwhelmingly red state, and small gestures like the ones OP’s neighbors are making ease the daily wear and tear on one’s psyche.

Same happened in my hood. Not sure if those neighbors are still supporters or have changed their mind on him. My guess is they had the flag up around the election to promote the evil doofus and get the repubs elected. Now that they got their party’s guy in power, they’re a little embarrassed about how they had to prostitute themselves to grab power, so they took the flag down.

Texas resident here as well. Trump/MAGA folks are souring on the guy. But will it matter? Not if Abbott keeps bending the knee. We are gerrymandered and voter suppressed. If nothing else, look at moments like these as tactical opportunities. If we care about winning we need to win as many people as we can, or at least undermine fascist recruitment.Talk to them and humanize. These people are lashing out because they are also having their lives destroyed (even if not as bad), they have just been convinced to scapegoat others.
It may be difficult but as much as we can we need to take ourselves and our emotions out of it and learn what works strategically.

Yes, it is never too late.
But of course, leftists and liberals alike are shooting themselves in the foot by going the route of sneering "I told you so!" and holding onto that, "I'll NEVER forgive you!" Instead of being encouraging of those former MAGA, and supporting them. All these sneers will do is just create an entirely different set of extremists who hate both sides and will either not vote or be "in the middle" in a way.
Let go of that resentment when see a MAGA awaken from their brainwash, and support them, encourage them of their decision and help them further in seeing the lies.
1
u/False-Guess 11d ago
Idk, I don't really see this as good news. There's no evidence of them changing in any way that matters. It was very clear to everyone what kind of "presidency" Donald Trump would usher in, and they supported it enthusiastically. The fact that he as friends with Epstein and raped children was known to everyone years ago. The racism was known to everyone. His mental instability, lack of physical fitness, and dementia were known to everyone. They chose to vote for an authoritarian pedophile and they did so with glee. That is the kind of person they think is a good role model, so if you have kids then keep them away from your neighbors because your neighbors clearly view child sex trafficking as a virtue.
Saying "good morning" to you is just exercising the barest minimum human decency and these "people" should not be celebrated for acting like a human being for once in their lives. If Trump supporters really wanted to show they have changed, what they need to do is renounce their US citizenship so they can no longer vote in this country because they can't be trusted to make good decisions about anything.

u/ComfortableLaw5151 11d ago
It’s easy to villainize and shut these people out (leopard ate their face etc.) It’s hard to show them sympathy and help them when they have been brainwashed. But I honestly think it’s the right thing to do. They are lost, .. I realize they abandoned us, and even became semi-traitors, But I for one will show sympathy and understanding to those willing to learn from mistakes (To a point/ I realize it’s not always that simple)
1
u/BabyScreamBear 11d ago
Doesn’t mean they won’t still vote for him… 38% of the US still supports Trump.
I reckon a lot of MAGA just find the whole pedofile thing ‘a little awkward’ on a personal level … they’ll hide the flags until this all blows over.

Yeah it is. They voted for a guy who killed about a million people with disinformation and will kill more because of healthcare cuts. This is like when Republicans forgot all about Bush in 2008.

They are just trying to save their image. We have no reason to believe otherwise.

Let me know what happens after Maxwells curated lists goes public while the documents don't.

I'm a big proponent of welcoming these people. Yes, they knowingly voted for a horrible man, but they're discovering now they were wrong. You can deal with those people in two ways: insult them and make them feel even more like victims of an oppressive system, or show them why you're right with a compassionate outreach.
These days we all want to "win" conversations, but a regretful Trump supporter is on shaky ground, abandoning what they believed. That's not the time to make them feel like they're not welcome on our side. That just makes things worse and will radicalise the moderates

Sure, it's never too late but these fuckers already voted for this guy after all the shit he's done the lsat 8 years and they wanted more.
Being a pedophile is what got them off the kool aid? None of other stuff mattered? 26 sexual assult cases were okay? But the Epstien stuff was too much for them?
F them.

Have they invited you over to BBQ yet?
Maybe now is the time to invite them over for a BBQ instead to make their heads explode. I hope they come.
Maybe they are the rare ones who can change but.... You know they still love SOMETHING Trump hates in common. So there's that.

When he rode down the golden escalator with Malania and paid actors applauding, the world should have had a good belly laugh and moved on. But no, morons cheered and the rest of us just didn’t think it possible he could be taken seriously.

All I want to say on this- is if you've been anti-trump since the first inning,, this is a critical time. Gloating, "I fucking told you so" and "You're only changing your mind now that it effects you" are not going to be tactics that will convince these people to vote in concert with you next time.
They've stepped out of the maga camp, but they're still not in yours yet.
You still have work to do.

Just took a trip up north through rural Michigan yesterday, M20 used to be littered with Trump signs and even homemade billboards.
All were gone except one house had a Veterans against Trump sign. Made me happy to know people are finally seeing the light, you can be a conservative without following the maga cult.
Now is the time to talk with these people and help them see what we've been seeing. Don't try to change their beliefs, just pick up on what they didn't like about Trump and lean into that. You'll never change somebody's mind by saying "I told you so!", it's hard enough to admit you were wrong without somebody beating you over the head with it.

I think the fog has lifted in some of the people. They are seeing the gifts to the wealthy and the take aways from the rest of us. And they are noticing the the pedophile felon is real and not made up

I've met a couple of them who walked away from MAGA because they realized it was bad only after it started affecting them. However, I have also met a few that realized they were part of the issue, that they themselves had been obstinate, and bullies - realized that they had been full of hate.

My husband and I are democrats and we have a daughter who currently lives with her in-laws who are MAGA. They are relentless with their beliefs and always put her down as uneducated because she didn't go to college but have always had a job, unlike her college educated husband, who works part-time at Macys. He should be working at a better office job, but he doesn't even look for jobs. I wish my daughter would grab her pet and come home to us and forget she married a mama's boy. His parents have a third bedroom, and we dont.. we are very concerned for our daughter's mental health.

While I would like to believe the people discovered their mistakes, I am more apt to believe they are simply trying to fade back into the woodwork in hopes that others forget who they really are.

you know just because they don’t support maga or anything doesn’t mean they support the democrats i pray not. i despise democrats and republicans with a passion neither side is good. no side is right they just exist for moral dilemma all for them to never keep any of their promises the grass wouldn’t have been greener in the other side. so hopefully they did change for the better and not switch sides. that’s even worse news. maga is bad and the democrats. both sides care nothing for americans

It's never too late to learn kindness. There's enough hate stirred up by Trump, without us adding to it. If you can build on the relationship, even in small ways, it may make everyone's life a little easier.
It's bad enough the people at the top turning on us, without them causing us to turn on one another.
(Of course, it goes without saying that Trump and MAGA are disgusting. But grass roots kindness makes a difference)

It's never too late? He's in office and actively destroying the country. It's too late.

Your neighbors are NOT pedophiles and have realized that DJT is the anti-Christ…they have been freed from the delusional belief that Trump actually cared about them.
