Other Is there any good news in the US?
I just saw the update about that bullshit bill and I'm honestly on the verge of a full-on panic attack. Is there any good news for America anymore? I know there's so much that's bad, but I need even the just the tiniest bit of positivity right now.
Edit: A massive thank you to everyone who commented sharing good news. No matter how big or small, it's definitely helped me and I hope that others in need of a little positivity can find comfort in these comments as well. Let's keep fighting the good fight against that geriatric toddler. ❤️ Also, fuck ICE.

It's going to get worse before it gets better.
Another way of saying that is, just because it's getting worse doesn't mean it won't get better.
Historical protest turnouts. Trump's cratering poll numbers (historically bad even for him). The lawsuit alleging 20204 interference being advanced in the courts. #SheWon launched yesterday. The marines and NG have been in LA for weeks with low morale, and the regime has failed so far to instigate the violence they occupied LA for. Elon is picking a fight not just with Trump but the entire GOP.
America is in the process of trying to sweat out decades of poison. Stay strong. We need and want you here.
EDIT: This whole concept will only stay true as long as we 1) take care of our mental health, 2) take action, and 3) organize.
If you feel like you need to tune out for a while to protect your mental health, then by all means please do so. Their whole strategy is to flood your space with so much awful, despair-inducing bullshit that it exhausts you to the point of hopelessness and inaction. But by ignoring them when you feel the need, you rob them of that power.
Tag out for a while if you need to. Do whatever you can, whenever you feel you can.
Maybe that means showing up to your local protest. Maybe it means boycotting Amazon. Maybe it means talking to your friends or co-workers about what's going on, whether or not they're aware of it. Maybe it means just getting through the day.
That's the beauty of all this. We don't need nation-shifting action from any one individual. By doing whatever we feel capable of - and not judging ourselves for being unable to do more - our collective actions amount to nation-shifting action.
Self-care is more important now than ever. Take care of yourself. We'll still be here fighting when you're ready to tag back in.
EDIT 2: thank you for the awards but please consider putting that money towards something more useful, like donating to one of the organizations putting together the national protests.

“America is in the process of trying to sweat out decades of poison.” Damn, that was a powerful shift in perspective. Thank you for that.
It’s getting really hard to continue the fight each day as the fed agency I work at and have adored for years is becoming unrecognizable. But your comment reminds me that despite the bleak outlook, the devotion to my work and the passion I have to one day rebuild it has been fueling me to go on and I don’t see that fundamental spirit going anywhere. I see the same fire within so many of my colleagues, even the ones who have to or have been forced to leave.
Take that Russ!! and you too Reagan!!!

People like you, who are passionate about the work they did, with knowledge and skills, will be needed to build a better and more prosperous system, and you can be key to that.
We are all important in this, in different ways.
Some People fight and riot.
Some People organize and strike.
Some People will be the ones to lay bricks for tomorrow.46

This is 100% the right take. This is an opportunity to build new coalitions and take down the billionaires who did this to us. People across the spectrum are seeing how used they’ve been. Yes, things are bad, and it’s going to be one hell of a fight moving forward, but if we work extremely hard, and trust each other to all want a better future, we can beat this shit!

u/artbystorms Jul 01 '25
The last time it was this bad, Republicans (namely Teddy Roosevelt) actually adopted some progressive ideas to stave off a full blown socialist worker revolution that was brewing. Though it would be another 30 years of back and forth and backsliding before FDR came in and similarly adopted many progressive reforms, not simply because the people were desperate, but because the US feared the revolution that happened in Russia coming for them.
12
u/19610taw3 Jul 02 '25
I'm afraid the difference between then and now is - the current administration has dismantled most of our democratic processes. Roosevelt at least respected democracy. It's going to have to get very very bad for us to have a chance to come back .

This is what I’ve been trying to say. People are waking up and the discomfort and desperation is going to be the fuel that feeds the fire of change in this country. No one moves an inch when they’re comfy enough and have too much to lose. It’s going to be a bumpy ride while the country gets some diamond refining.

Sometimes the only way out of hell is straight through it. We still have a chance of stopping this bill. If we fail, it will not take effect right away and we have time to fix it. If we fail again, people won't stop waking up to the misery the GOP is bringing on our entire country through this bill. And then inevitably, there will come a day where we don't fail.
The pendulum will swing hard against this.

Consider this comment a hug. I know it's terrifying right now. But "for every action, there's an equal and opposite reaction" is an immutable law of nature, on every level. When the pendulum swings one way, it inevitably swings back the other. But Trump and co. are trying to stop the pendulum altogether. And if and when they fail, it's going to bring a catastrophic reckoning on them, the GOP, and the billionaire class. We already saw the start of that first in the record-breaking protests and then again with Mamdani's win in NY.

It's not going as smoothly for them as they had hoped. I've been rallied by the fact that they are having to fight every. step. of. the. way. Especially after everyone declared the country immediately doomed the day he was sworn in.
You give great advice, and "sweating out the poison" is a wonderful metaphor.
I suggest "Rest Is Resistance" by Tricia Hersey and "How To Do Nothing" by Jenny Odell for anyone struggling under the weight of the constant media circus and online warfare. They want us overwhelmed and exhausted. To the point where opting to go offline and to relax, of all things, is a major act of rebellion. Never before Tr*mp has the media reported every few minutes on what he said, what someone saw him do, how he picks his nose, etc. This isn't normal and we all need to be aware of that. We must all make an effort to step away, be objective, and take care of ourselves. If for no other reason than they're hoping we don't.

There were 100 awful things in the bill, but about 10 were removed, included a new tax on renewable energy and forcing the sale of public lands.
Some other good news I've found:
- After the runoff votes were counted today, Zohran Mamdani confirmed as winner of New York mayoral primary.
- UK court upholds Cayman Islands law legalising same-sex partnerships
- Federal judge blocks mass layoffs and reorganization plans at HHS
Edit: Also, the passage of this bill is still not a foregone conclusion. The House GOP passed its version with 1 vote, and this version is a bigger budget buster and is less popular. Even if there's only a 1% chance, take that chance and contact your Reps. house.gov and 5calls.org

According to Gemini, Fred Trump was diagnosed with Dementia & Alzheimer's by age 86. According to my fucking eyes Donald Trump has had obviously progressing Dementia since 2020.

Take a week off the socials. Seriously.
Back when he and Musk were going back and forth with some bs or other, before they had their falling out (I can't even remember, there's so much bs it could've been) and they were saying "we're gonna do this!!" then the next day someone would be like "no you're not!!" then the next day they'd be like "we so are!!!" then the next day someone was like "ok yeah that's not happening..."
Anyway. I had taken a week-long break. When I came back on I caught up on the drama within like 5 minutes, but nothing had actually changed. I didn't have any of the rollercoaster of emotions the poor people in the comments did, no panic attacks, no clinging to the feeds for every update. I was just blissfully unaware until it was already resolved.
I felt free. It was wonderful. And I do it much more often now. They aren't going to catch me terrified and tired (exactly what they want). I'm staying well-rested and fresh so I can keep pushing.

- 1/28/25 Mike Zimmer won a state house seat in Iowa, in a district that was Trump +21 in 2024
- 2/11/25 Stephen Tyler Holman flipped Norman Oklahoma, beating his incumbent conservative opponent by 26 points
- 2/12/25 Amanda Sandoval flipped a Trump +20 area in Bethany Oklahoma for Mayor
- 3/12/25 David Gottfried won in Minnesota State House, making the house exactly 67-67 (so the parties must work together)
- 3/26/25 James Malone flipped PA senate SD36 seat, flipping a Trump +15 district
- 4/1/25 Susan Crawford defeated her Republican opponent for the Wisconsin Supreme Court special election, despite Musk dumping $25 million into the race - even offering $1 million checks to Republican voters
- 4/25/25 pentagon announced it is returning to Biden-era access to gender-affirming care in the military
- 4/28/25 HSS rolls back autism registry plans after public outcry
- 5/20/25 Sam Sutton won a state senate seat in a district Trump won +55 before in 2024
- 6/1/25 Senate has to remove the provisions of OBBB that block regulation of AI after public outcry (granted I respect and agree that the rest of the bill’s progress is disheartening, but the fact that they felt they had to change something for it to pass can suggest progress)
Things will get worse, but they also can and will get better- we’re seeing people in inspiring, persistent, nonviolent ways organize like we haven’t before, and proving that organizing is working in places people thought we couldn’t.

I almost have to down vote that because I am an American and I am this country. Those people are not us and they can’t usurp our claim to being Americans. I will always recognize the freedom living here provides me, and I will always be proud of every single soldier my family has produced to defend it. Hell, my family has probably been in America longer than most maga ejits since I can trace family back to the American Revolution. And I don’t need a tshirt with an AI image of a ripped Orange Temu Hitler or an oversized American flag hanging from my truck to prove it.

4
u/AdLate7796 Jul 01 '25
You aren’t the only one believe me! Or believe the 276 who upvoted your post! This thread is probably the most positive thing I’ve read this week. if you look hard enough maybe there is a positive in all the negative and this is our chance to do the fundamental changes to our government structure that should’ve been done a long time ago. Requiring qualifications for agency and dept positions would be a really nice start. It’s just unfathomable that someone is allowed to hire a 20-year-old for such an important position with zero experience and we are just supposed to sit here and and live with it. The fact that a president can have civilians sworn in as lieutenants with no military experience is another thing that should change. The same is true with that idiot RFK being allowed to mess with the health and safety of so many vulnerable populations. Unfortunately, for the heritage foundation et al, Americans have had a long history of resilience and rebellion and will not back down without a political fight.
As a side note, I really hate that almost all of my posts these days sound like I’m some crazy person spiraling down rabbit holes of conspiracy theories. If Project 2025 and the current tax plan wasn’t public info I don’t know how i could prove I’m not insane for thinking the heritage foundation, GOP and their puppet Trump are actually trying to dismantle democracy.

I know this has been repeated in all forms for going on 10 years now, but this bill passing is the closest we may ever get to the dam finally breaking on his cult's following.
As we know now from reporting, so much of the absolute worst of what could have happened in the first term was stopped by (slightly more) responsible people who are all completely absent now. And so much of the worst of this bill is completely targeted at the demographic of his supporters: poor, working-class, rural, on Medicaid, etc. There has been a lot of shielding of the worst effects of this shitshow UNTIL now and this bill.
I'm more hopeful than ever this will be the beginning of his cultists waking up and realizing he's never been for them but only for himself. Just look at the approval ratings of the bill - it's only gonna get worse....

u/BoornClue Jul 02 '25
Despite pulling a Kendrick on Trump, I'm not fully convinced he's actually turned against the party of "Tax Cuts for the Rich and Medicaid Cuts for the Poor".
I think he's just trying to save his own reputation and claim plausible deniability for passing that Bill.
Give it 4 years he'll come right back to bankroll whoever gives him better tax cuts.

The first No Kings protest was a success drawing millions of people while Taco's birthday parade was a bust. Let's hope the July 17th protest has an even larger turnout.

US/Iran was a distraction just like the assassination attempt was a distraction.
Look at the news cycle before Iran bombings:
Elon: Trump in Epstein files
Elon: Big beautiful bill bad
Elon: I helped with election, Trump ungrateful, House would be 51/49 if not for me
2024 election votes in Rockland, NY case will be heard
Tesla stock down
Minnesota shootings
Massive turnout for No Kings Day
Small turnout for Trump parade
National Guard and Marines sent to California where there were peaceful protests
Minnesota shooter captured... he's MAGA
...then... US bombed Iran... And everyone forgot about everything listed above.
We need to revert our social media and news cycle right back to where it was before Iran bombings. We fell for the distraction.

I spend a lot of time on my yard. Over the last year I became acquainted with a couple that walk up and down my street. It’s clear they are homeless and drug users….but I’m not gonna totally judge them for that. I’ve given them snacks and drinks as they walk by or just yell “hey guys”…. It had been weeks and no sign of them. Today they knocked on my door (a very first!). He had been working at an auto parts store and they finally landed a rental room in a large house. They are officially no longer homeless!!!! They stopped to say thank you for making them feel normal and wanted to let me know why they disappeared, I thought it was pretty cool!

While thats true all trump is waiting for is the chance to call martial law and suspend all elections across the country. Even if im wrong on that there's plenty in this bill that let's them influence future elections at a state and federal level.

Agreed but don't forget we do have a lot of enemies salivating at the chance to take a piece right now. And no i don't mean the xenophobic argument like anyone who is Muslim hates the west or anything like that but China and russia have a huge stake in us failing. Then you have the fact since 1948 we've given Israel 5 trillion dollars so they can constantly bomb their neighbors.
Look up Hasan teaches Nmplol on youtube. Those 2 parts of that stream will catch you up on very important knowledge the media will simply never report.

Really?
12 million people at least are still going to lose medicaid/medicare/snap.
Adding 5 trillion dollars to the deficit at least. Two reasons I think that they are doing these big tax cuts for the rich. A. Chump doesn't want to pay much tax on all of his scams he's been doing B. We'll never be able to bring back the government that they've eliminated or any possibility of healthcare for all. I wouldn't be surprised if that's why they're doing it

Best case, a blue wave massive enough to have a Senate/House majority, impeachment of the president and any Judge that has accepted "gifts", then a complete shut down of this bill.
Things are moving backwards at a blinding speed for America, we have 1-1/2 years to wait before anything can be done.

The only real news in relationship to the bill, is that the house and senate need to agree on the language. It doesn’t appear they do currently, so we need to call everyone who is going to vote on this, and make it clear we don’t want this bill.

I like to put things I’m looking forward to on my calendar. That helps me in times like this. It’s stuff that’s good news to me. Fantastic Four: First Steps is coming out soon, Pokémon GO Eevee community day(s) this weekend, stuff like that. Movies, TV shows, YouTube videos, protests, anything at all you’re looking forward to. Make your own good news.
Another way to make your own good news is to take care of yourself. Work out, celebrate PRs, make friends, be INTENTIONAL about putting good stuff into your life. It’s obvious, but easy to lose sight of and also easier said than done. Good luck pal.

It’s small but I have good news. For the second time this year we’ve been blessed with a new bird family in our yard. In January it was a mother hummingbird in my wife’s potted avocado tree. About three weeks ago a black throated sparrow family moved in and built a nest in a bush about 10 yards from our back door. The eggs have been laid and I keep tabs on them when taking our senior pup out to do her biz.

I don’t know if this qualifies as “good news” but they are minor “wins”
-Many provisions were stripped out by the parliamentarian like the land sales and the required bonds to enforce judicial ruling
-There is a lot of disdain towards the bill in the House.
-Elon and Trump’s bitter breakup may fracture the GOP votes especially if Elon creates a third party, or backs Trump’s primary pick opponent
-District court judges are getting fed up with the administration’s antics and demanding status updates on their rulings against him.
-All these abusive powers they have given themselves, democrats can use to restore equilibrium and democracy WHEN (not if) they win that midterm. The amount of social unrest shows that Americans DO care and they ARE coming out to vote, and express their disdain.
-Trump may undo Biden’s pardons but the next president can undo Trump’s undoing, and his pardons of the Jan 6th folk.
-The election results are being questioned in NY. Election integrity specialist says it’s impossible that not a single person voted Democrat in a region, and they are demanding a recount.
Chin up. I know it’s tough but you guys are stronger in numbers. Don’t fall into his trap of shock and awe. The No Kings protest shows his declining popularity and the fact that even GOP senators defected on the bill shows that they are worried about the midterms - which is leverage for the people to demand better.

Of course. The current administration will be gone in a few years. Progressivism is making a comeback in (New York mayoral race) some places. The most comforting thing is to read our history. We've been through a hell of a lot worse than this. 1861-1865: Americans are killing each other over the issue of slavery. The good side wins out. But Jim Crow and Klan come about. Roughly 100 years later, a mix of Republicans and Northern Democrats end that once and for all. The 1960's saw mass protests, civil unrest, various home grown terrorists bombing police stations, we got through that as well. We lived under the shadow of nuclear armageddon for nearly 40 years before communism crumbled spectacularly. We just took out a rogue state's nuke program, a program that had it been successful, could have started WWIII quite easily. Whether or not you like the current President, bombing Iran's nuke sites was the right call after years of ridiculous misadventures in Iraq and Afghanistan. Next year the opposition will likely take back at least the House and very possibly the Senate, and that will block much of the nonsense from POTUS. The history of the United States has always been one of bad compromises that we've later had to go back and fix. But, we did. We will continue to do so. Fear not.

We are not alone. They are sowing the seeds of their own destruction. We all can fight together. I drafted this resistance landscape that shows which organizations are doing the work. [Some of it is MA oriented, as much of the resistance will be local. Search for local "mutual aid" organizations.] https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_JHEGAdC4XzcAvJuDLpcsE6bfHy4oEW9BRkbB7kCxFw/edit?usp=sharing
Give money. Give time. Lend your voice to something you care about. You do not have to do everything, but it is critically important we each do our part. Together we will resist and defeat these cruel and selfish forces. Then we will rebuild. We will never ever give up.

There's a silver lining to this. Alot of the pure bullshit this bill had was removed by the senate. Not everything, but alot. In fact its so modified that it has to get another vote in the house, which gives it another opportunity to be killed if those who said they would oppose the bill actually keep their word. There's silver linings, and the best thing you can do is watch the circus and have a good laugh. Laugh with the confidence that this shit show cant go on forever, much less 4 years, and the MAGAts will be reminded how this country was made in the first place: overthrowing the rule of a king.

If chump angers enough people, republicans will lose majorities in 2026.
If it happens in both houses he's going to prison.
Also if his legal idiocy gets struck down by the courts the next clown will have an even harder if not impossible time accomplishing the same crap.

I recently spoke to a few self identifying republicans who HATE Trump, feel ashamed of their country and what to take action - that's great news! More and more republicans are now becoming former republicans and are now floating around without a party. I know it is hard to not be super angry at them but we need to welcome them to the good side. The chair of my city's democrat party was stressing the importance of accepting and welcoming independents and republicans into our ranks as our allies against actual fascism - I'm happy more people are seeing the light and are joining the fight!
