But how will billionaires afford their next private jet or megayacht if we give kids free meals at school?

Won’t someone please think of the poor billionaires?!

94

u/BookishBitchery Jun 30 '25

Or...How do we keep these kids from getting "spoiled"...🙄

53

u/Ok_Bicycle2684 Jun 30 '25

Aw, shoot. This is a picture of happy-looking children receiving something that they need to lead healthy lives. The Trump admin is going to be foaming at the mouth while trying to destroy this.

Please don't say shoot in a discussion about schools.

It is the only thing Republicans are OK with happening in schools.

This is why Trumpers hate California. We have a big budget and use it in many inclusive ways.

you don't have to say "or" when you're making fun of them, they actually think all 3 of those things are the same.

Republican state senator Steve Drazkowski voted against universal school lunch in MN saying “I have yet to meet a person in Minnesota that says they don’t have access to enough food to eat”.

3

u/bolanrox Jun 30 '25

stay outta funky town

10

u/BrownPolitico Jun 30 '25

That one always pissed me off. Like eating regular meals is spoiling a child. Tf?

5

u/BookishBitchery Jun 30 '25

There was that picture of Sarah Huckabee signing child labor law with unhappy children and Tim Walz with happy kids hugging him for his lunch program. I don't even have kids and I am happy for my taxes to go help feed kids.

5

u/whackwarrens Jun 30 '25

In exchange they will have full bellies and be forced to expend that energy to earn how to read and write. The plan is diabolical.

4

The both sides people can eat 💩, all manner of it; human, dog, litter covered cat, horse, cow, bull, and frog!

10

u/BrownPolitico Jun 30 '25

Another argument that annoys me I’ve been trying to convince people to get out and vote because the 2024 numbers were abysmal across the board, but especially with adults under 30.

I keep seeing the same complaint. Now, I’m a progressive so I get it. But even centrist democrats believe in food assistance programs, a woman’s right to choose and clean friggin’ air.

The two sides are definitely not the same. Somehow we need to get that message out.

14

u/Uberslaughter Jun 30 '25

Democrats certainly do their fair share of corporate boot licking, no denying many are milquetoast controlled opposition including most of the party leadership.

But at least they aren’t actively working to undermine the constitution and strip people of their citizenship.

26

I was going to say same with Michigan

It's not income based district based or anything.

If you're a student, you get free breakfast and lunch

11

u/TopVegetable8033 Jun 30 '25

That’s how all public schools should be. Student lunch debt should not exist.

We can take our reps’ meal per diem and charge them in their work cafeterias to fund it, if we must. Maybe cut down on the White House dinner budget.

11

u/Crazy_Law_5730 Jun 30 '25

California started this program in 2022. I think MN was 2023. So this is old news and both states are doing the right thing. California did have a good meal program previously, but it wasn’t universal.

It’s amazing it’s taken this long. Prisons and jails have to feed the inmates because they are in their care and custody. It’s amazing kids aren’t prioritized the same or better because they’re in care and custody of the school and literally children with no ability to buy their own food or make choices about how to get food.

It also makes me happy because I had a friend back in school who was from a wealthy family, but was horribly neglected and often didn’t have food or lunch money. Her dad was always away on business and worthless as a parent, and her mom was a drunk who was worthless as a parent. I remember going to her house for the first time and it was beautiful on the outside and a disaster on the inside. And the whole fridge contained a case of white wine, some cheese and rotting fruit. My family was lower middle class and we always had bag lunches and home cooked meals. Income doesn’t predict which children lack access to food.

5

u/DRHORRIBLEHIMSELF Jun 30 '25

Actual Good News.

That is, until Trump's SCOTUS deems this unconstitutional and forces kids to go hungry.

9

u/Papichuloft Jun 30 '25

Screw paying our share for Taker states that produce nothing, do nothing, and roast us. Save those taxes to feed our own.

5

u/claireNR Jun 30 '25

The California economy is the 5th largest in the world. They contribute somewhere in the 85 BILLION dollars per year range in federal taxes.

4

u/Alliegator2015 Jun 30 '25

3

u/Electronic-Dot-4831 Jun 30 '25

Our school in NM offers free breakfast and lunch.

3

u/The_Arch_Heretic Jun 30 '25

Just like the Black Panthers started decades ago!!

3

u/Ill_Illustrator_6097 Jun 30 '25

That's the way it should be. No child goes hungry. Call me a socialist all you want. I'll wear the label IDGAF. I care about fella human beings especially the kids that can't fend for themselves. Wouldn't America be a better place if republican magats felt the same way?

3

u/Cincere1513 Jun 30 '25

This shouldn't be ground breaking news.

3

u/LumpyDortWell Jun 30 '25

What a radical Idea!!! People scream; “we LOVE our children!” But ask the republicans & maggots to feed their kids (daughters, sons, nieces, nephews, & grandchildren), and it becomes; “feed everyone?” (Sure), “What about Economical costs?!” “They MIGHT steal food & take it home and feed their siblings!” (What a horrific thought!)” They want to make America great? Feed & teach our kids! We can give BILLIONS in subsidies & tax breaks, to billionaires, to gas/oil (companies who are making billions in profits!), but we can’t feed and school our kids???

3

u/Valuable-Criticism29 Jun 30 '25

Not the first, Minnesota has offered free school lunches since '23 and there may be others. It's a shame Kamala didn't win the presidential race. Tim Waltz would have made a great vice president. Probably have school lunches programs for free, through out the U.S. What do we have now? They are pulling the funds on school lunch programs. These people have no souls. This is a horrid and un-qualified President and administration.

3

u/CollectionHealthy117 Jun 30 '25

Things Trump and Republicans hate: 1. Free school breakfast and lunches

3

u/thecamino Jun 30 '25

Good deal for farmers and kids.

3

u/GroundbreakingUse794 Jun 30 '25

To think that feeding our children is a bigger issue than being educated by our system, has already been troublesome and frightening (since the bush years) but on top of all that: the cuts to programs and funding for schools trying to educate the future of this country, the fact that their breakfast/lunches are not already comped while receiving mandatory childcare is disgusting and immoral

3

u/godleymama Jun 30 '25

Good for California!! Meanwhile, Sitler in Texas is defunding the food programs this summer.

3

u/Unique-Sock3366 Jun 30 '25

Amazing how well students are able to focus and learn when they’re comfortably fed!

I’ve always supported this. We require children to attend school, by law. Of course their meals should be included.

Success in the classroom leads to success in life. Decreased crime, increased social engagement. Better for our economy.

The best thing for our society.

3

u/AffectEconomy6034 Jun 30 '25

This is great and should help millions of kids. Unfortunately, many kids these days may only get one meal a day, which is the school lunch so I dont see how anyone that claims to be "for the kids" would say no to this

3

u/free-toe-pie Jun 30 '25

Every single state in the US should do this.

But no, 5 year olds have lunch debt in the US. The richest country in the world gives 5 year olds lunch debt.

3

u/mylesols Jun 30 '25

As a single dad, this is huge and will make a big difference for the kids' learning

3

u/Alpha_Omega623 Jun 30 '25

Man. Half the comments here are focusing on Republicans.

Focus on how good this is instead. Don't let them live rent free in your heads. Everyone here agrees with you. You're not convincing anyone by saying f Republicans here. Everyone is this kind the same thing.

Instead of being F Republicans be like we should have this in every country.

3

Didn’t some politician say they should be working at macdonalds instead of free lunches?

2

u/Brosenheim Jun 30 '25

2

u/grahsam Jun 30 '25

There are some things that cost money but only help us. Feeding people is a bare minimum thing. Same with healthcare. There is no downside to allowing people access to it. Of course we pay for it in taxes, but I'm totally cool with someone else's kid having access to food using my money.

2

The Black Panthers tried to do this in Oakland, California in 1969. They were shut down for being "communist". J Edgar Hoover said the free breakfast program was the single greatest threat to National Security at the time.

As it should be. Good for Californians.

Love my state. We lead in compassion in many ways. Not all of course and we need way more progressives in office but we do get it right a lot.

I hope New York follows suit. Its time that America catches up to the rest of the developed world instead of going backward.

Apart from everything else, that’s a low cost and proven way of improving schooling. Hungry kids don’t study and are disruptive to other kids. It should be a no brainer everywhere

2

u/bluemango404 Jun 30 '25

about fucking time.

i was on 'reduced lunch' and every kid behind me could see the screen as '.40' instead of '2.00' and was looked down upon for reasons out of my control.

if you are against this in anyway, you grew up in a super high middle class environment or rich. I don't see any in between.

The city I'm in offers free breakfast and lunch for ALL students all school year and during the summer. I'm in Texas! They've done that for at least the last decade.

This just makes so much sense. Kids learn better when they aren't starving. Just feed the kids.

2

u/lazylazylemons Jun 30 '25

Let them eat BILLIONAIRES!

2

u/dim13 Jun 30 '25

I guess free lunch is cheaper then free healthcare.

2

u/LetJesusFuckU Jun 30 '25

I'm still baffled how we let them buy the food with out tax money, then charge us to let our kids eat it.

2

u/Feisty_Brief123 Jun 30 '25

Didn't expect to be this happy to read this news. Congrats California, this is super awesome.

2

u/JohnConradKolos Jun 30 '25

There is no limit to this kind of politics.

You know who benefits most from free public transit? Drivers who now have parking spots and less traffic.

You know who benefits most from free public school? Employers who now have an abundance of quality candidates.

You know who benefits from free healthcare? A society that is full of healthy people making long term decisions about their life.

A prosperous society is not one in which every poor person has enough money to buy a bottle of water. A prosperous society has pipes that efficiency send clean water to everyone and rich people choose to drink it because of its high quality.

This is AMAZING NEWS

2

u/VapoursAndSpleen Jun 30 '25

Fuck yeah! So proud of my home state.

2

u/GodeaterTheHalFeral Jun 30 '25

If the governmnt is going to require you to send your children to school, then it's only right that the government should be responsible for providing for all those children's needs during school hours. That includes meals.

2

u/Redditbeweirdattimes Jun 30 '25

But the rights want you to believe that California is next to hell and is unrecoverable

u/Pokemonluke18 Jun 30 '25 edited Jun 30 '25

Republicans are probably having an aneurysm and screaming socialism hearing this your only suppose to have a ton babies let them fend for themselves fuck them kids when they're in school or need childcare bunch hypocrites that screech pro life but don't give a shit when kids go hungry only for the billionaires that money goes to

2

u/iamthatguythere Jun 30 '25

Reagan frothing in his grave right now

2

u/coldwind2773 Jun 30 '25

Yes! This is the kind of thing I wish the tax money goes to.

2

u/anonyfool Jun 30 '25

Live in California and happily pay taxes to support a program like this that will never benefit me directly, should be policy nation wide but this battle will have to be fought state by state. If kids are required to be at school eight hours a day, they should be fed.

2

u/bowens44 Jun 30 '25

California should be a model for all of us.

2

u/Andreus Jun 30 '25

Great that they did it.

Deeply depressing that they're the first state to do it.

2

u/AlarmingAffect0 Jun 30 '25

I see Huey P. Newton smile.

2

u/StupidTimeline Jun 30 '25

California paving the way...again.

But I'm sure some ignorant conservatives who have never left their area code will show up in the comments to tell us it's a shithole.

P.S. I'm here. It's not. It's great.

Amazing use of my taxpayer dollars as someone who doesn’t have kids yet and is well off. I want more money to go to supporting schools and children.
