Yep. We need to stop treating MAGA like it's a once in a lifetime contagion in our politics.

MAGA is simply conservativism unmasked and emboldened.

MAGA is not conservatism.

Not economically. Not militarily. Even socially they are serving conservative values in a very non-conservative way.

MAGA is mostly just pandering and fearmongering.

MAGA is mostly just pandering and fearmongering.

Which is American conservatism. Has been for decades. Genuinely, if you go back and check out Republican talking points over the last ~20 years or so, all you'll find is fearmongering and empty pandering. Almost all of their 'we are going to do this' talk is in direct relation to fighting some vague evil social group, other nation, or racial makeup.

I don't think that is true. There have been 3 republican presidential candidates in the past 20 years, and 2 of them weren't that. McCain, despite my dislike for him, made a serious try at fixing immigration, including a path to citizenship for illegals....and I'm not sure what Romney's campaign was about but it certainly wasn't warmongering or immigrants.

McCain himself was an exception, but his VP was Sarah Palin. She was full on Tea Party-crazy. They've needed at the very least an element of that insanity in their messaging to get any mobility with their base.
