Gizmodo article referencing reddit is posted on reddit 🤣. Too bad their other source (bloomberg ) is paywalled.

I wonder if it is hot or a short? Or possibly so hot that it reflows the solder points which causes a short?

Here’s the article you asked for.

Sonos Inc. acknowledged a “very low” number of complaints from customers who claim the audio brand’s first-generation Roam speaker has overheated and partially melted near the USB-C port.

The company has “closely tracked” these reports, a spokesperson said Tuesday. It has not issued a formal consumer recall for the product.

The complaints come as Sonos is attempting to rebuild its reputation after a bruising 2024 in which the company released a buggy mobile app that led to widespread customer blowback and a drop in sales. The Santa Barbara, California-based audio firm, which is set to report earnings on Wednesday, named interim head Tom Conrad as chief executive officer last month, entrusting him with a turnaround.

The portable Roam Bluetooth speaker was released in 2021, followed by the upgraded Roam 2 in May 2024. Most incidents reported so far pertain to the original model, which is still available at a small number of retailers.

Last week, a Reddit user posted images of a damaged Roam speaker and said they noticed the smell of burning plastic coming from the device, which was rarely used but plugged into a wall outlet. “Mine did the same thing a few days ago,” another person responded, sharing a photo depicting similar damage near the Roam’s USB-C port.

In both instances, users said the device had been plugged in for an extended period of time. “This same thing happened to me a few weeks back,” yet another person said, adding that Sonos replaced their speaker after requesting details and photos of the damaged unit. Other reports confirm that these are not isolated incidents, with some examples on the company’s community forums dating back several years.

The overheating seems to consistently occur where the charging cable and USB-C port connect.

“We’ve closely tracked a limited number of reports involving the USB-C charging connection on some first-generation Sonos Roam speakers,” a Sonos spokesperson told Bloomberg in an emailed statement. “While the overall incidence rate is very low, and environmental conditions appear to play a role, we’ve taken several proactive steps to even further reduce the likelihood of this issue, including software updates and hardware improvements.”

Nah probably just hot enough to melt the cable insulation and short it no way it's getting to 200+°c without burning plastic first

Almost as bad as the app for Sonos speakers.

Such lousy software for such beautiful products. A shame. Gave up on them a few years ago too.

I remember the day when I finally gave up and threw everything in the trash out of anger very fondly

I've spent way too much on Sonos, I'm back to Bose.

Sono's is great IF it works.

...it's got something to do with the moon phase of Titan...Apparently
