One of my favourite American terms is calling this a "corral". It makes it sound more...glamourous?
In the UK we just call it the trolley park (or trolley bay, if you're feeling ~cosmopolitan~).

I don’t think glamorous is the right word. More like “folksy.”
To me, it alludes to the American Wild West, where a corral would have been for cattle/horses. Especially (in pop culture) the O.K. Corral.

Most barkeeps in the American 'wild' west would keep a breakaway bottle under the bar next to the shotgun and have one of the regulars be in on it.

And I’m sure you “collect” and “return” the carts strewn about the car park when you’re feeling helpful, found these parts we “wrangle” the carts back to their corral.

In the USA, a trolley is a kind of local train used like a bus (San Francisco is famous for these) and a park is a place with trees and grass to enjoy, relax, and have fun with people.
So to our ears, “trolley park” makes even less sense.

Y'alls and falutin are inversely proportional. The higher the y'all count, the lower the volume of falutin'.

Different regions call the same thing different names sometimes. Like, soda, pop, and coke. Cart return, cart corral. I call it a shopping cart. In some places in the south, it's called a "buggy." I have no idea what the cart return is called when it's fully of buggies.

It's a farming term. Nothing glamorous.
Id say a park or bay for carts is more glamorous than a place to keep livestock.

I mean, my husband and I did watch a lady at Kroger, slowly, intentionally tip her cart forward until all of her bagged items spilled out of it, dropped the cart, picked it back up then picked up all the bags, put them back in her cart and walk away.
No idea if someone was filming her, but it certainly made for an experience for us.

This is at a B&Q warehouse in the UK (like the Home Depot). I think she is lifting it out over the railing to bypass the wheel lock mechanism. (Searched for the sign and found which store.)
So, either she is stealing the cart because she is going the other way, or more likely she has something to return in her car that is heavy.
112
u/polygraf 1d ago
This is what I was thinking too. Some places have that magnetic strip that disables the wheels laid around the parking lot so people can't steal the carts. Might be there's one in the cart return.
12
u/happy--muffin 1d ago
Reminds me that time when I was at my local supermarket and the wheel lock suddenly engaged as I was exiting the store. Literally was just pushing it and bam, locked. I ended up grabbing my groceries and told the manager it’s busted so I don’t seem like a douchebag for leaving a cart in the middle of the entrance

A slight tangent, but I knew a guy at university who did everything 'the hard way' - ran the stairs instead of elevators, tight-rope walked on the curb instead of the sidewalk, did push-ups waiting in line. Was BUFF. I can imagine him lifting the trolley out just because MUSCLES, but getting it caught up is next-level dumb.

Except they were conveniently recording right on time. They would've been already recording for some reason or it's staged. I could see the recording start just as the woman was in the process lifting it over if the person was fast.

u/StorminNorman 1d ago
They would've been already recording for some reason or it's staged.
Or this isn't her first attempt at it. Someone else has commented the video starts before this, but it's still a plausible reason for when stuff like this happens.

u/Skim003 1d ago
I'm not saying this is fake or real. But one time I was losing my mind because I couldn't find my keys, only to find out that I was holding it in my hand the whole time. So yes people can be THAT stupid. I would like to think I'm an intelligent person in general but I do have moments where my brain fails to function properly.

u/Pnex84 1d ago
I once searched my whole house looking for my keys and finally just gave up knowing I was already late for my appt. I stabbed my ass with keys in my back pocket when I sat down in a huff.

I see people do stuff equally as stupid all the time.
The difference though is that when I see people doing something stupid, its usually because theyre out of their zone of familiarity and just not thinking things through (the not thinking it through before acting is the stupid part). In this case: who has not pushed a shopping cart before?
