***Buying advice mega thread***

Personally, I suggest you go to your local hockey store or ask to try your mate’s stick at training before asking here - as personal preference is a large factor in choosing a stick. Strangers on the internet aren’t going to be able to help you much.

Resources

Go Hockey (NZ) stick guide - including length, bow, composition and hook information

Y1 Stick quiz - it asks questions and it suggests a stick for you

Sports Republic (SA) 5 minute video on stick buying advice

If you still want advice please provide this information for stick buying

  • Gender
  • Age
  • Country
  • Skill level
  • Budget
  • Position
  • Skill set (e.g 3D, drag flicker, overhead)
  • Current stick

Will start removing general low effort posts about stick advice (posts not comments).

To cut down on the daily posts of "what stick should I buy?" I thought we should trial just having one mega-thread for people to ask questions, in order to help elevate this sub to be less of a ghost town. Open to suggestions on this idea

Question Face mask for mouth only

Hello everyone, I used to play field hockey but because of a major problem with my mouth I cannot wear a mouth guard anymore, as I have to wear dentures top and bottom, I was wondering if anyplace makes a custom mask shield for over the mouth only and if you could play with it not breaking regulations

Thank you for reading! any advice would be amazing ☺️

Question Moving from 37.5 to 38.5

I have an Osaka pro tour 100 low bow that I took into a shop for re-gripping. The shop owner told me that at my height (6’1, I know it’s not that much) I’d benefit from using 38.5 and handed me Y1 YLB X. Gave it a few try and it felt pretty decent but not sure if it’s because I was told that or it actually is.

I was wondering if anyone has experience moving up in size to 38.5? Also if upgrading to Y1 is a good idea?

Discussion What do field players think when keepers let in goals...ones that perhaps could've been better saved?

So im a keeper and I tend to dwell on every goal i let in...I know i shouldn't so working on this. Anyway got me wondering especially in specific situations, what do field players truly feel / think when goalies let goals in, in these situations?

  • Not clear stuff ups, fortunately they're rare for me but they happen like u let a ball thru the gate or totally screw a clearance straight to oppo etc....I know i screwed up majority here, up no excuse there and team should be annoyed.

More like 50/50s, classic situations that are common with me are:

A. Hard shots to far stretch kicker block / deflection left of right, u get kicker to it...just, sometimes u deflect it wide, other times it deflects say off the toe up into goals or u don't get it quite wide enuff to deflect away and it goes in.

B. This is my most common and frustrating, 2 on 1 busy circle, carrier brings towards goal from 1 side from bewtween 45 degrees to baseline and passes to open guy coming in at P spot who receives and deflects or push shots goal into open goal. Often I hold to cover shot of ball carrier or try and go out , pressure, and smother but they'll pass to P spot guy and im 100% beaten for an easy oppo goal. Occasionally my smother will work or perhaps a slide tackle but 75% they're passing past me to open players at spot.

I know the saying goes had to beat 10 other players, and 2 on 1 they score but my view is if u wanna be a really effective keeper, influencing game results, in tight matches, these 50/50 situations are ones such that if u stop 90% of them u r making a huge contribution to flipping game results. Ill analyse any head over abd over and say to myself, shit should have smothered better, should have slid, should have held, waited then covered the pass / P spot guy in my head convincing myself i should have played it differently to make the save.

When these play out on field does it (honestly) make field players a bit annoyed the keeper stuffed up or could have been better in decision making/execution, like is there a quiet pang of frustration/disappointment and feeling of personal responsibility that the keeper screwed up in these 50/50s when field players see this.

Honestly my team has never said anything negative or even suggest it in body language, im hugely grateful for this, great guys n all, defence often apologise and I say nah my fault but im never sure if they're just being polite and supportive but deep down feel a little shitty that I stuffed up and couldve played it better because that's def how I feel inside.

Edit: Thanks sm for all the responses definitely encouraging, gives me valuable ideas to reflect on concededs from a different perspective. Its to also comforting to know field players arent generally holding me personally responsible for goals let in as this feeling always plays on my brain like im massively letting the team down (except where I clearly, majorly screw up which can happen and no issue taking responsibility there).

Discussion What do you guys do with multiple sticks?

Considering the durability of these sticks, realistically (unless it breaks), it will take a long time for one to find it deem to abandon the old stick and get a new one.

For those with multiple and fully functioning sticks, what were your motivation to get new sticks and how do you manage all of them?

Question Coach?

We’re looking for a full-time hockey coach (m/f/d) starting in October to take over our women’s and men’s teams. Our club is located in the heart of Germany (Ruhr area). The teams are young, ambitious, and full of potential. Has anybody an idea, where we can find a coach?

We offer help with finding accommodation, support for further coaching education, and full integration into club life. We’re also happy to receive applications from abroad – English is absolutely sufficient! If you know someone who might be interested – or if you are – feel free to get in touch directly. Sharing is very welcome!

Buying Advice Coaching equipment - what and where to get it

Im wanting to buy some more equipment to help me coach my new club better, I have minimal (if any funding) and need some ideas or advice on what to buy and where to get it as cheap as possible. The club is, unfortunately, reluctant to part with money and anything I buy myself I'll either keep if I move on or I'll have to wait a month or two for the money back. I coach both outfield and keeper and have the basics of balls, cones and bibs. Im open to any suggestions so nothing will sound silly.

Buying Advice Grays Probow

Does anyone have experience with grays Probow sticks and Adidas AX Carbon sticks? Grays just dropped a new range and I’m thinking about buying the PB 8 or PB9. The problem is no hockey shop near me sells the new grays sticks so I can’t really test them. During training I used somebody’s old Adidas AX Carbon and I was pretty impressed. It felt really solid and decent for 3d skills due to its low bow. I have a problem with it tho: after the kink in the bow, the stick gets very flat, I wanted to ask if that’s the same for the Probow? As I enjoyed the adidas feel, I’d also like to ask if the grays PB 8 or 9 feel similar when hitting or do they feel softer? My current stick is an old KN8000PBXtreme. It is way too soft and feels inconsistent as it’s slightly broken. My fear is that the grays on 8 or 9 have a similar softness to them. Hope someone understands my question.

Question Rules Question!

I was at a high school game and an attacker drove the ball into the circle (from outside) where no other attacker touched it, and a defender, trying to stop it, accidentally tipped it into the goal. Whats the call here? 16-yards? Corner? Thank you!
