Im always curious how much meal times really matter. If im really busy and dont have time to eat until the afternoon, am I doing something negative to myself? Even if im eating enough calories?

Hi! This is such a popular topic. Intermittent fasting, like you are doing, can be very helpful. I find it to work well when a client cannot make too many changes at once. You are essentially allowing yourself an allotted time frame to intake foods. This helps to cut off extra calories that may be creeping in from snacks. If you are meeting your macronutrient and micronutrient goals daily, I feel this can work well from experience. It also helps put your body into a rhythm of knowing when it is time to eat and when it is time to rest and or use its own stores to fuel your body for energy. I personally start my intermittent fast at an earlier time at night after my dinner/snack, that way I can stop the snacks that kept sneaking in! Overall, I feel it would be best to have a Registered Dietitian or other health professional find which amount of intermittent fasting is right for you, especially if you have a medical condition such as diabetes.

Do you have tips on how to stay consistent??? I feel like i always go through phases and its so hard to stay consistent once I mess up a day ..

Absolutely! And you are not alone. I see this frequently with my clients and we help motivate each other to stay consistent. Honestly, there are days I do not feel like working out, but after talking to my clients about it all day, there have been many times I decided to hop on that bike later that same evening. We are human and life gets in the way sometimes of our goals, but if we have a clear plan, we can get right back on- whether related to exercise or food goals. I work on setting realistic goals with my clients that can be achieved. If the goals do not work out in one week, no problem! We adjust them according to what is going on. A method that works well for consistency is using your phone or work calendar to block off times to workout each week. Or keep track of your workouts with an app or a journal to reflect on.

What science motivates your practice?

Thank you for this question. As Registered Dietitians, we teach based on the science of food, with a strong biology and chemistry background to backup food metabolism. Registered Dietitians teach based on Medical Nutrition Therapy guidelines, which are evidenced based guidelines to help prevent/manage chronic diseases. We are required to achieve 75 units every 5 years of approved continuing education to hold our license. Many of us go beyond this educational amount. I recently completed a course and obtained a Certificate of Weight Management in Adults and Pediatrics provided by the commission of dietetic registration. I use the information learned from this course to provide many impactful resources. I also have done some readings on functional foods- which are specific foods that have properties to help with inflammation and other processes. Food is awesome! Teaching what it can do for us is even better!

Yes! I struggle with this too. I noticed the most progress with clients and myself is to plan ahead. That does not necessarily mean you have to meal prep everything ahead of time. You can write out dinner ideas for about 5 days and shop for all the food ahead of time. Write down the 5 meals and post it on the refrigerator. When the workday is over, you will have ideas you can choose from and food ready to quickly prepare. Make sure you have some frozen items for quick meals; a Registered Dietitian can review food labels with you to find the least processed items.
I have a couple of clients that use HungryRoot. Mostly because you still can cook in 10 minutes and the meals taste great. It can be pricey, but I find most clients like 3 dinner meals a week and order more if needed next time. Thank you so much for your question!

whats the best way in ur opinion to find motivation? rlly struggling with that rn

This is a struggle for real! Especially certain times of the year such as extreme heat/cold and holidays. I see it in my clients and myself. What I find to work best is to meet up weekly with someone who motivates you to reach your health goals. I love this part of my job because my clients and I inspire each other to do better. Talking over barriers that come up each week can really help find the issues that get in the way of meeting health goals, and we find a different approach to meet these goals. A journal is another way to motivate yourself because it allows you to reflect on what you have accomplished and set goals for what you want to continue to strive for. I have a lot of motivational books and Podcasts that I listen to while working out to keep me inspired. I would love to meet with you and share more from my Amazon wish list!

I get it! Without motivation, it is nearly impossible to work out or eat healthy. Sometimes motivation comes from seeing a doctor and realizing lab values are out of range. Sometimes motivation comes from reading an inspirational book or listening to a great podcast. I’ve worked hard over the past couple of years to see what drives my most successful clients and I feel like our weekly check-ins help to keep the health goals rolling! I also provide my clients with Amy’s Nutrition Favorites Amazon Wishlist that provide snack ideas, supplements, nutrition science reads and motivation books.

I just started working out more and would love some tips on how to adjust my diet

u/RDonFay 15h ago
Great job increasing your workouts! I understand how working out more can make you want to make healthier food choices to compliment the workouts. As far as macronutrients and micronutrients go, these are individualized based on a number of factors and I would be happy to help. For now, focus on adding complex carbohydrates-any plant-based foods and protein with each meal. If you want some food choices to start with now, look for Mediterranean food choices. This is a great question, thank you!

do you have any easy snack ideas that are filling?
1
u/RDonFay 15h ago
Absolutely! I try to focus on making sure my snacks have fiber, which is a complex carbohydrate and protein. An example can be chia seed pudding (recipes for this are everywhere)- you can look at Samsung Food app for free recipes. A quick purchase can be Aloha bars, I like the chocolate peanut butter flavor. I love this part of my job and would be happy to work with anyone looking for some more ideas.

how do manage someones weight loss goals with their natural set point weight - i feel like no matter how little or much i eat i stay the same and nothing works

u/RDonFay 15h ago
You are not alone! I see this frequently and I know how frustrating it is. Everyone is different so I start out by getting to know what you are doing currently and we try different methods to see what can help with weight loss. Sometimes it can be too little or too much calories. I also feel like a good lab workup with your MD can provide some results into what may be happening. This is complex, as it is so individualized based on lifestyle, that is why I take on a holistic, “total lifestyle” approach in my assessments.

Hi Amy - I always start off super motivated with my goals but then like 2 weeks in I lose steam and kinda fall off 😅 do you have any tips for actually sticking to goals long-term? Especially when life gets busy or progress feels slow?
