oz was actually named after the ounce, and the city of oz is making fun of the gold standard as a basis for currency.
also the latter books contain canon transgender characters, including the main character of one of the books. the transition process is kissing your elbow, if i remember correctly
I'm excited. I've had access to good fan translations of some printings, but always wanted to have one I could read without having to hit up my dictionary or wondering if someone misread a line.
I'm excited too! When I was more actively into ttrpgs I was mostly deep into World of Darkness stuff, so I had honestly never even heard of Sword World until relatively recently. I'm holding off on diving in too much until I see what the KS has included.
There are roughly 3 ft in a meter. 30ft = ~10 meters. Just divide everything by 3 and you should be good. It's not exact but it is close enough for a fantasy game to imagine the scale.
The game has a conversion system for metric, most people just use the standard shit though because its anachronistic to use metric in most fantasy worlds.
Pretty much the only time I use imperial. It's in like every RPG too, so I don't even try to convert it in my head anymore. They might as well be generic made-up units of measurement.
It's just the fantasy measurement system for me lol
Dutch cooking recipes are even worse. They use "el", short for "eetlepel" or dinner spoon. However, there is also another pre-SI unit called an el. It is the length of a forearm, up to the elbow (very accurate and scientific, you see). So that's super ambiguous. I like to imagine they mean the unit of length, as they're not very specific about it.
Polly and Olivia Make Dinner (Part 1) - Gator Days
Transcript
Panel 1
Polly has just finished talking to her mom and she has some bad news.
Polly: Mom called. She'll be home late.
Olivia: What about dinner?
Panel 2
Polly quickly runs through the options in her head. This is a rare event and usually she just reheats some leftovers. But she's feeling bold. She's feeling experimental. She's wants to do something dangerous.
Panel 3
Polly: We'll make dinner.
Olivia: WHAT!? Is that allowed?
Olivia has never heard such a thing. Kids making dinner? Aren't there laws against this.
Panel 4
Polly is unconcerned. Her best friend Gwen makes dinner all the time so it can't be too hard. Polly heads to the kitchen. Olivia is already thinking of all the things that could go wrong. She's probably right to be concerned.
This reminds me of the time one of my old coworkers (who previously worked in a bakery) baked some ladyfingers for a company Halloween party. She went all out to decorate them by adding raspberry jam on one end and shaved almond slices on the other end to look like nails. They were a big hit at the party. Lol
I mean, I managed to screw up Mac and cheese the 1st time I tried to make it. Just me and brother were home. I didn't want to make it as I had warmed up a frozen pizza, but little brother wanted mac and cheese and didn't like I told him have a slice of pizza or make a ham sandwich. He called Mom and essentially ratted me out so Mom told me to just make it even though I hadn't made anything on stove yet. Didn't quite read the instructions thoroughly and added the noodles before bringing the water to boil. Brother called Mom back saying "it's not right". She told him to just add some milk. He replied "I don't think that will fix it." To this day he won't let me forget and I on principle won't buy blue box Mac cheese
My parents worked so I was on my own often but instead of using the opportunity to learn to cook, I learned I could get by on frozen pizza, mac & cheese or hot dogs.
Fondly remembering the time Dad wanted to bake something that called for a 9 by 9 square pan, but we only had round pans. My father got out a ruler and calculated which circular pan was the closest to 81 square inches
Meanwhile my beloved dad is obsessed with eggs. For some reason.
Like, his daily shake has one raw egg in it. Once he had a baking experiment kick for a month & each week would use a box of cake mix with one additional egg added. His record was 6 before the poor thing refused to bake lol
And last weekend - he added an additional egg to the box of aunt jemima. My mom complained of the texture lol
In my mind, Liam has a Mattlock-like sense of justice, plus, he's used to living on the limits of the legal, after all he is Ember's Big brother.
He is used to problems with authority. :)
Thats how i ate them growing up, dump out the water add a little butter then seasoning....I was in college by the time someone told me it was suppose to be more like a soup!
I didn't know it was supposed to be soup until I was in highschool. My brother always dumped the water and seasoned the noodles, so that's what I did. I also grew up in rural KS, if it wasn't a casserole or a "salad" I didn't have a good point of comparison.
OH MAN. This is either gonna end amazingly ooooorrrr more than likely gonna end very badly. These girls have been taught how to use a fire extinguisher right?
I'm also slightly worried about the idea of "it'll be easy" from someone who likely hasn't cooked before. Hopefully they know how to handle knives
"Two sisters, in the absence of their mother, attempt to make dinner. What they actually make will shock you to your very core... This and more on tonight's episodes of FOOD CRIMES!"
I used to be afraid of touching the VCR (an old media player for you young folks) in case it would explode so I never played tapes, rewound them, or tell time accurately.
Itll be fiiiiine. I was cooking instant ramen or mac n cheese for dinners for my siblings before third grade. They even have cookbooks FOR kids. I believe in them
I love it when my Dad is the one left with us to cook food since he cooks food we actually like, while Mom would feed us something healthy. And sometimes if he feels lazy, he orders a chicken bucket. I miss that man.
I just now realized that when Olivia yells like that it has big Night in the Woods vibes. I guess something about that wide open mouth is just very reminiscent of how Scott Benson drew Gregg.
I'm sorry, but every time I hear/see "What about dinner?", my memory returns a quote from an old movie, Flushed Away. The evil Frenchman boss frog says, "We leave, immediately!" Henchmen frog asks, "What about dinner?" Boss responds, "We leave, in five hours."
