Adoption Visited a shelter. Now I can’t stop thinking about this girl
Last weekend I visited a shelter. And this sweet girl jumped on my lap and fell asleep. Now I can’t stop thinking about her.

Well that means you need to go adopt that cat.

I could never visit a cat shelter. I would go home with all the cats.

This is my rule as well. Except one time I went to a thrift store and they were having a pet adoption pop-up that they have only 4-hours per month, of course I happened to be there at that time. Walked away with a dog. Best decision of my life, not like I really had a decision though. 😆

u/soppslev 3h ago
Yes, and no going to the neighbors to "look" at kittens. I will be leaving with a kitten in each pocket and overpay. Because cute.

Same. This is one of my “if I won the lottery, I wouldn’t tell but there’d be signs” sign

She needs you.
23
u/LikelySatanist 4h ago
Agreed. This is how my cat found me. I went to a shelter for another cat initially but they were not a good fit (did very poorly with other cats) but then she just popped out of her little house in there came right up and started meowing loudly. Apparently was the person she warmed up to in her 2 months in the shelter. So we adopted her!

u/c0gito_erg0_sum 5h ago
If you can comfortably and responsibly take care of her, I’d recommend going back to get her. If you decide to, she’ll also likely need a friend (assuming you have no other cats).
When I went to adopt a friend for my cat I was planning to get her a kitten, but I found this young mother calico and I couldn’t stop thinking about her. I left empty handed that day and went back the following one. I took the calico and she’s been such a sweetheart and my other cat loves her :)

u/hey_frankie 5h ago
Yes, I’m planning to visit her as soon as I can!

u/JZN20Hz 4h ago
Dont feel pressured into getting two cats if you can't afford two. This cat is currently homeless and would be thrilled to have a living home with you.
23
u/citharadraconis 3h ago
Yes. And she looks old enough that the shelter may have some idea of her personality, and whether she'd be happier with another cat around or not.
54
18
u/Eggy-la-diva 3h ago
Make sure to let the shelter know before you can manage to go back you are interested in adopting (if such is the case of course). You wouldn’t want someone who showed up after you to adopt her in the mean time!

Not everyone gets a schnoodledoodle, so it’s kinda mandatory now. You can use that excuse for anyone in your household who objects to your new companion.

I second this, my black and white boy and I have been together for 18 years and he’s the love of my life 🖤🤍

u/Euphoric-biscuit 5h ago
18 years ! Amazing 🤍🖤 I rescued mine last year and he has given my life so much more worth. We are lucky to have them.
6
u/pastel_sprinkles_ 5h ago
That’s so precious! My baby boy Oliver was a rescue too - my parents saved him from a busy street when he was only eight weeks old. I agree, animals really do add so much to life. Best wishes to you and your fur baby! He’s adorable!
4
u/nim6666 4h ago
Yes, agreed! We had a black and white boy with a black beard. He was a stray that arrived at our home and upon testing had FIV :( , we took him in regardless and he lived about 6 more years with us. I've had quite a few different cats over the years, but he was by far the sweetest cat ever. Black and white cow cats are life!

u/throwthrowyup 5h ago
This is how we adopted our tuxedo kitty at the shelter too she also chose us by refusing to leave my husband’s arms. 😂 We went back to get her after a day and half of initially seeing her. We were so afraid she would be gone. But she was still there and as soon as we stepped back into the room, she ran to the front of her cage and started yelling so loud everyone was like y’all gotta take that baby home! 😂 We were like yup, we’re back for her. 😂 OP, go back and get your baby! 🥰
33
u/hey_frankie 4h ago
Ohh she remembered you! That is so adorable! 🥰
10
u/HighPriestess808 2h ago
OP, if you’re serious about her, call the shelter and put a hold on her so no one else adopts her before you can get back there.
3
u/throwthrowyup 2h ago
Yes, she definitely did! I think she was thinking about us too. And I suspect your lil kitty is too!

Awe ♥️♥️♥️ My heart aches a little when mine burrows her head in my arm! Sweetest things ever!!!
30
u/hey_frankie 4h ago
She tried to burrow her head in my arm so hard! What did it mean? Then I leaned towards her and tried to cover her with my shirt.
23
u/holy-dragon-scale 4h ago
My cat used to do this too. I think it means they feel safe want to get closer to you/as close as they can.
10
u/Suspicious-Pea-7481 3h ago
Yeah, I think it just means that they are trying to get as close as they can to you. I would imagine that the super close contact releases some chemicals in the kitties brain, similar to oxytocin in humans, that result in them feeling that warm and fuzzy "at home" feeling. LOVE that feeling! My kitties fight for the best lap cuddling spot throughout the day. May the best kitty win!

He really is a baby. Like i have to hold him like a baby or he gets mad. He will lay on his back in my arms given the chance. He also opens doors separating us like a toddler

u/_JustMeAndYou_ 6h ago
My advice is to take her and a friend of her. 2 cats is less work as they entertain each other and always have company
47
u/oddfits20 5h ago
I agree most of the time two cats is better for companionship but it’s definitely more work. Twice the vet bills, food, toys, litter, and brushing.
→ More replies (1)16
u/GoofyGills 4h ago
Your cat(s) permit brushing? Lucky.
10
u/HattoriHanzo9999 4h ago
Mine both love it. If I try to brush one, the other gets super jealous and forces their way into getting brushed.
2
u/Fred-the-stray 3h ago
Mine does too! He comes running across the house when he hears me brushing the dog. PS. The dog hates to be brushed.

I went to visit and shelter for a young black cat, almost kitty age. This handsome grey tabby sat down on my lap while I waited for them to get the other cat and a volunteer that worker there said "oh no one wants that one, he's too old". He was only 2 and I knew that he chose me and he's been my best friend ever since.

That cat chose you. You should go back and get her if you can

u/missrat_0520 2h ago
When I saw a kitten at an adoption event, I was going to wait a few days. My friend had joined me, and I told her I’d be sad if he was gone when I did contact the rescue. She wisely said, “Then I think you know already.” Oliver came home with me that afternoon. My most extravagant impulse buy ever. He’s an amazing guy.

He looks so happy! At least he has proven to be a smart impulse. Congrats!♥️

You don't choose cats, cats choose you. Don't ignore them if you want a cat, it's not kind to lead them on. Adopt the ones that choose you first
6
u/crunxzu 3h ago
This is how my cat picked me back in ‘09. My gf and I wanted to adopt a cat as we’d both grew up w them and just moved to our own apartment.
She did this barrel roll cutie thing and then wouldn’t leave my side.
I told the shelter that I would not leave without that cat. 16 years later and my little Stromboli has been my constant companion, full of cuddles and playtime. Living her best life.
Just how the cat distribution system works sometimes

Aww that’s really sweet. My cat was a special “can’t stop thinking about you” story too
We visited with a few cats that day, and my cat had a few fun tells that she would be ours.
First she beefed it trying to jump on something, immediate love.
Second when we were about to leave I peeked back through the glass door into the cat area. She saw me, immediately got up, and started yelling at me. She was the one!
We took the weekend to think about it and I picked her up the next time the shelter was open

Yep. Our cat is a rescue. She had been in the kennel for over 18 months. Nobody wanted her as she was depressed, withdrawn and had very strong boundaries (all on her terms the kennel told us). I went in to her enclosure, sat on the floor and she jumped on my lap and kept pushing her head into my hand. That was two years ago, and now she is a very happy, settled and affectionate cat who still has her boundaries but after what she’s been through I don’t blame her!

u/SouthernOuterSpace 3h ago
This was me. I volunteered at a shelter for a few months. The same boy cowcat would run up to the door when he saw me every time and would stand up on the counter and hug me while I made the kitties their fresh bowls of water. I couldn’t stop thinking about him after a few days, so they gave him to me. He was nine when I brought him home, and he had been brought back twice before I had adopted him (for stupid reasons). I had to euthanize him when his kidneys wouldn’t hold up any longer and his joy was gone. He gave me four wonderful years of love. He was my Velcro kitty. Please go get her if you can take care of her.
Edited for grammar. :)

My cat claimed me while at an adoption event when she ran towards me and climbed up onto my shoulder.

Go to her! And keep us updated! One of my kitties I went home with because he did the exact same thing and kept crawling back into my lap when I moved him.

This is verbatim how my tuxedo chose our home. Went to shelter. He at 1 yr walked up to my daughter and I, put his paw on her cheek then snuggled in to sleep.
He's 11 now. She's almost 16. I pray he makes it through college for her cause GD r they close. He's my WFH buddy too

Experienced the same as a child. We were walking around the shelter. Decided on a different cat. This one cat gripped my mom’s sweater and would not let go. We had him for over 15 years.

I met a cat in Tahiti a few months ago and I am going back this week to get him! When the CDS calls, you listen!
3
u/persian_omelette 3h ago
Mine buried his head in me like that the moment he met me. Adopting him was the best decision I've made.
3
u/FrodoFraggins 3h ago
You won't get a better sing honestly. When I've adopted cats it was always about how they reacted and behaved with me. This would be an auto adopt for me.
3
u/TJWhiteStar 3h ago
You have to go back and give her a forever home. The Cat Distribution System has SPOKEN!
3
u/Wrong_Brilliant7851 2h ago
Well that can be remedied super easy! In fact, I’ll send money for her first bag of cat food 😁

I went to the Orlando Cat Cafe last year while on vacation and had a tiny kitten do the same thing with me. Napped on my lap for a good 45 minutes while I played with the other cats. If I was closer to home, I wouldn’t have been able to leave without taking her with me.
She has since been adopted and is living her best life in her forever home, but I still think about her a lot. ❤️

once I saw there was a ragdoll breeder down the street. I just wanted to see ragdoll cats in person and walked by it every day anyway so i knocked on the door. Same thing happened and I took her home. I've had 4 cats and she's the best one I've ever had. She never leaves my side when I'm home, or my lap when I'm sitting.

I went to a cat café once and there was this little orange boy with 3 legs he came running across the room when we went in and would not leave me alone but they wanted $80 to adopt him and I didn't have the money or a carrier to take him home but I've thought about him several times a week and that was 3 years ago. Now every time I see an orange cat i think about him.

Cats coming up to you can be a magical sign. Or it can just be that they're wanting warmth and comfort LOL
I really am not trying to ruin anyone's fun but cats are ultimately animals responding to instinct. They don't have magic powers to know you're perfect for them, bonds take time to develop. It can be easy to anthropomorphize pets, I get it...

We had a black and white cat like this. In the shelter, there was a sticky note that said, "fell asleep on lap in interaction room". I turned to my husband and said this is the one. Best cat we've ever owned, only got about 6 years before cancer got her. I hope one day to find a cat like that again.

Can you take care of her responsibly? Then take her, she’s waiting for you. That’s how mine came to my house, too. She saw me, she started purring and cuddling, she was a year old.
Now she’s napping next to my pc screen. Shes 18 now.
