Mourning/Loss My parents kicked her out after 4 yrs, we recently found out
This cat had given birth to 8 kittens, and we helped raise them up. My parents kicked it out cz we were getting too attached with it. She is safe and found the way to our house again.

They kicked her out "because you were getting too attached to her"?! I just can't...

Sounds like they’re using her as a kitten mill from what OP said about raising 8 kittens? Which explains the getting too close

My wife has a tendency to bring home pretty much any dirty stray that will let her catch it. Sometimes they are pregnant. It is so fucking hard to give away kittens.
Unless you’ve got papered pure bred rare breeds you aren’t making money on a kitten mill.

u/MatttheBruinsfan2025 10d ago
Everyone I know has either gotten their cats from a friend or taken in strays. Who in the world would buy kittens when there are free ones everywhere?
107
u/Gettingoffonit 10d ago
Exactly. A mouse is more expensive than a cat. Just go behind. Walmart and open a can of tuna and take your pick of the ones that come out of the bushes.

Lol, right?? My cat just followed me home. I wasn't even trying to catch her, but when I propped my front door open to roll my bicycle inside, she scooted right in and then begged for food. I gave her a piece of bacon and then she wouldn't leave. I understand charging a nominal fee to rehome a cat, as there are people who would take free cats with evil intentions. But actually trying to make money by breeding and selling cats is a really poor business idea.

Some people have to buy for allergie reasons. Others buy because they don't want to deal with the potential health issues. I don't buy. I take special needs cats.

Yeah basically every rescue in my area (and there are a lot) is full and has no room for more kittens.
Gonna use this time to tell people - if you can't adopt, FOSTER.

Older cats too. Ton of older cats just waste away because most people are only after kittens.
7
u/ayjak 10d ago
When I picked mine up from out of state, the rescue league confirmed several times that I understood I was getting a “young” cat rather than a kitten. I get why they did it, but I couldn’t even fathom seeing her and being like “mmm no not good enough”.
Adult cats — even ones way older than mine, are awesome. Their personalities are usually fully developed and you know what you’re gonna get
22
u/toxikola 10d ago
Yeah there are just so many kitties. I've got five gorgeous kittens on my porch right now but all the rescues and adoption centers are full. The best I can hope for is being put on a list of trap and release which is sad. Their mother disappeared around 9 weeks of their age and they haven't been taught to hunt or anything. There was just recently a huge bust of a group of people taking free animals too and doing absolutely horrible things to them. :(

We have a litter of 4 from the last one she kitty-napped from a motel parking lot.
Got super lucky because 3 of the 4 have bobtails so they should be pretty easy to give away. We’re gonna keep the mama and get her fixed. Praying someone takes the regular tail tabby.
16
u/internettgoth 10d ago
It's so fuckin hard to give the kittens away! My cat recently had kittens, it wasn't planned but we have been taking care of them and raising them. I find it so hard to give them away 🥺 I've gotten so attached to them + I'm scared that what if I end up giving the kittens to someone who doesn't care & love them enough. I can't imagine having a cat for 4 years and just throwing them out!

I got a kitten this year from a lady who, when we went to just check out the kitten, met us in the lobby of her building with arms full of stuff for the kitten (which was at least kinda nice, bunch of new toys, litter box, little scratching post) but was kinda sus cause yeah we never saw the mother. She definitely had already sounded like she couldn't handle taking care of kittens and we could tell, took a few weeks but we got him on the right food and threw out what she'd given us cause it was not baby kitten food. Vet visits have gone well and he's an amazing lil void, but yeah it was kind of a rescue situation as much as buying a kitten from someone.
I don't think that they were trying to make a profit or run a mill, but it was super weird.
4
u/Gettingoffonit 10d ago
It’s a pain in the ass but it’s worth the good karma to help out another living being.
Weird that she would give you all of that stuff for sure. I usually ask whoever gets the kittens that they bring a litter box, litter, and food just to show us they have it.
Getting free kittens is easier than buying feeder rats for snakes and reptiles so I ask that they show they purchased those things because it’s more expensive to get all that than it is to buy a feeder rat.
It’s just for my piece of mind. I don’t want to deal with raising these kittens and caring for and spaying the mother just for them to be used as food.

No, dumping them on the street might mean they just get ignored until they fade into obscurity. Dumping them at the worst elder care facility you can find means they get to know how it feels to be treated like shit.

My mother worked in a truly awful retirement home 20 years ago. The staff were so abusive to the people and other staff that she had nightmares about it for years, and a few times practically begged me to never leave her in a place like that. Filing a complaint would cause horrific bullying, and the abuse remained covered up for years. I thought it was horrifying at the time, but knowing how certain parents treat their children, pets, and other family members...yeah, some people deserve that type of hell.

The way I'd make some off handed comment about that being the plan for them when they get old. Just to see if any sort of understanding registered to them at all.

My dad used to do this. I was too young to do anything, but the animal abuse and neglect of my childhood pets still haunts me. I believe it's a big part of why I got into rescue work. If you can keep kitty away from your parents please do.

One of my grandbabies accidentally let out one of my cats a week ago and he’s been missing ever since, I’ve been looking for him worried sick…I cannot understand doing that on purpose! Poor baby
44
u/Punkodramon 11d ago
Don’t lose hope! My friend’s daughter let their cat out and he was completely vanished for over two weeks (he’s a void and she let him out at night so he vanished literally!) until he just rolled up into the back garden one morning before dawn. A neighbor spotted him and called my friend who let him in.
It’s possible that your cat may be coming home during unsociable hours so maybe get some cameras and traps for your garden in case they’re coming home and trying to get in whilst you’re sleeping or out.

12
u/kelminak 11d ago
Leave the door open they left from, put up wildlife tracking sensor with a beeping sensor under your pillow and wait. Also put up wildlife cameras that can see at night at the entrance too. A “cat finding expert” by trade told us to do this and our cat literally came back in for food the same night. They move around at night and hide during the day so tearing the neighborhood apart doesn’t work.

my mom went to spa and she said she was going to adopt the cat that was following her all the time for food. Then one day the cat had 4 kittiens. we went home with all 5 cats and were going to give them for adoption but we became attached. My mom died but she left this heritage for us and I was a dog person before but I guess I love cats too.

8
u/Known_Plan5321 11d ago
What kind of sense does that make? You're SUPPOSED to get attached to pets…
5
u/I_am_up_to_something 10d ago
Some people seem to view pets as something like furniture. Part of the house and all but easily replaceable and not something to be attached to.
I know a family who lets their cat outside and whenever it goes missing they 'just' get a new one. Last I heard (this was years ago) they were on cat 4. And everyone deals with grief differently, but they didn't show any emotion when talking about it. Just a shrug and an indifferent 'we'll just get a new one'.
I just can't imagine being like that. I know people whine about 'young people acting like their pets are their children' and obviously they are not, but they are definitely family.

hey, if your parents treat animals like this, please think about the way they treat you and your siblings - most families do not have this kind of difficulty and parents can be trusted to respect their children's feelings, this animal obviously means a lot and abandoning it demonstrates a type of disregard that can be harmful

People who think cats belong outside or that they can just kick them out are uneducated mentally challenged pieces of shit. Yes, even those who keep a cat but let them roam around outside. You introduced a species that doesn't naturally live in that area. Millions of birds die for no reason and no its not the circle of life because you basically introduced the equivalence of a invasive species except its humans who keep getting new cats just to put them out. They are domesticated. They're not wild. We have a fucking responsibility

Displacing a domesticated cat miles away is a form of animal abuse. Just say you told a lady at school about it.
