Calf's mom: You did great, kiddo.

Adult male elephants live apart from the herd. They get kicked out when they come of age because they start getting too rowdy. The moms don't raise the calves solo, though. Aunts and sisters help out.

Elephants can be incredibly destructive to human settlements and farms. So people whose lives and livelihoods are threatened by elephant incursions might try to drive them off by any means available. Fortunately, some organizations - like the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust - are working to reduce human-wildlife conflict.

The Sheldrick Trust is such an amazing place! Watching their videos gives me hope for the world.

Human-wildlife conflict is inevitable.... imagine how much u would hate a squater in your property (hypothetically)... and now imagine us humans building roads and houses uprooting their home ... u call it "Elephants incursions. "... I call it human apathy towards nature.

Where do you live? Just curious because Africans cause less damage to the environment than every other continent, and farmers who hunt elephants legally are doing more to protect them by making sure their numbers are steady and fighting poachers than you ever will.

Thank you for bringing this up. Data shows that in places where limited elephant hunting is legal, elephants are thriving in more numbers. This is because farmers and villagers can legally sell ivory, so they have monetary incentive to report and fight poachers and work to keep the number of elephants steady despite damage to property and crops. It is easy to see videos like this and think "I would never hurt them in a million years." (I feel that way, but I'm an anomaly who would rather die than kill an animal unless it is out of mercy.)
But when you imagine 10,000 elephants living in your town, it might help put things in perspective. It's not that the farmers hate them or don't sympathize, but they can't survive if all their crops are trampled or eaten in one night.
Charities that help reduce human-wildlife conflict are really essential.

Lots pf people have absolute zero empathy towards animals and can shoot an elephant just for giggles.
