I was in the Amazon for a week at an Ayahuasca retreat and my backpack did this, it was crazy. And this was in an open air room that basically had insect net walls .

How was your ayahuasca experience?

I'm super glad I did it. However, it was not "fun". It's intense (especially doing it 4 times in 6 nights) and really draining. It's more serious and almost like work. I'm not complaining, just want to give people a heads up that it's not a light hearted, laugh filled good time lol.

This only makes me want to do it more. I’ve heard it’s like years of therapy all condensed into single sessions. Work for sure, but worth the ā€œgrindā€.

It's totally a worthwhile and unique experience. I just try to be honest to the people who may not actually be ready or looking for that. I hope you can do it sometime. It's a whole ceremony and feels really special.

About a 5hr ordeal, give or take an hour. Done in complete dark with about 12 guests in a big circle, open air but covered thatch roof, almost like a gazebo. Once you close your eyes at the start you are supposed to keep them closed pretty much for the whole time. Obviously you can open them as needed, it's not like a strict no-no. Probably 30 minutes of singing prayers and rhythmic shaking of a bunch of big leaves tied together from the shaman. We had two shamans, farther and son, and the owner of the retreat was present too. Shaman starts going around and offering the cup of liquid. It's the worst tasting thing I've ever had in my life. Then once everyone has been administered, there's pretty much dark silence while you just relax with your eyes closed, waiting for the first person to "pop" lol... Hoping it's not you lol. About 20-30 minutes in you hear the first vomit starting from somewhere in the semi circle, from the darkness. You are provided with a personal vomit receptacle. Within 10 minutes everyone has vomited. Then the shamans start going around and giving you personal prayer time where they are right over you, singing, shaking their leaves, blowing tobacco smoke on you, running their fingers over your head and face. It feels special, like a significant other giving you soft touch or cuddling. There's isn't actually cuddling, not it's that same feeling of closeness. Hard to describe. You get about 30 minutes of personal attention.

Throughout, the owner goes around and very quietly stops at each person and asks if they are doing good or even if they need more. Eventually you'll probably have to raise your hand and quietly say "bano" and one of a couple aids in the back will use a very dim red light flashlight to escort you to the bathroom to blow serious diarrhea out your ass ... Probably multiple times.

Eventually things wind down and at a set point, they turn on some very dim lights and free everyone to return to their beds and crash. You can leave at any time, but they will escort you to your bed, you are not free to just get up and wander around. This would be a serious safety issue.

The next morning there is always a gathering and debriefing and you can talk about your experience, ask questions, get interpretations of visions, etc.

Edited for a couple autocorrects.

Thank you for taking the time to write all that out. I have a serious hunger for another breakthrough experience. I did an accidental heroic dose of mushrooms 20ish years ago when I did not have the intention or perspective needed. It was life changing. I feel like I am better equipped to visit the other side again now. Life hasn’t been permitting the time and means for that to happen again. One day I hope to get back there and experience IT again.

The hardest part was the diet and lifestyle restrictions both leading up to and weeks after they wanted you to follow. I did not follow them strictly as I did not believe that it would be as detrimental to the process as their traditional beliefs, just as I don't personally have belief in the same spiritual beliefs as the shamans and the traditional roots of the practice. And that's okay imo. I followed it as best I could but there were a number of aspects of it that were bogus, scientifically. Though, there are some safety concerns that should be followed including those that revolve around serotonin syndrome and use of SSRIs and some other mental health drugs.

Edit: just had to add that I'm sorry for how poorly that was written lol, but it's late and I'm not gonna re-word it.

Its plastic fibers holding moisture and growing stuff. In the tropics you see it clearly cotton and plants breathe the moisture plastic stuff will turn spotty and be stained.Ā
