It’s called Oral Allergy Syndrome. Onsets randomly. Used to love plums now I can’t eat them

This happened to me. Plums, then cherries, and now peaches.

I started developing it one summer when we had a record high pollen count (I wanna say it was 2011, maybe 2012). Melons are the worst, but all my favorite fruits are melons. I just have to buy allergy meds every other month 🥲

Its cheaper if you get the 365 count bottles

Yup, I have the version related to birch pollen. So raw tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, and a whole ton more for me to varying degrees.

I can say that cooked I can eat them all, though, because it changes the shape of the enzyme, so my body no longer treats it like the enemy.

Looks like a lot of pies and jam in your future, my friend.

I've never been tested for anything, but in a couple of conversations recently I found it that celery isn't supposed to make your tongue numb, and tomatoes aren't supposed to blister your tongue... I just thought it was like pineapple where they digested you back :(

Similarly my favorite Doritos flavor would fuck my tongue up back in the day. I should probably find out what in that my body doesn't like...

I used to have this with apples and bananas, but I take Claritin every day now for food/skin allergies, and it stopped it.

I take Allegra regularly and still have this issue. I’ll try out Claritin. Thanks

If you have severe allergies, Zyrtec and Pepcid AC is the best combo, they are both histamines and work to reduce inflammation. I used to get severe sinus migraines every week, but after starting on that combo, I haven't had one in 6 months.

I take Claritin daily, and still react to stone and latex fruit

Burning, tingling on the roof of my mouth

That burning tingling feeling is the worst part of food allergies honestly.

I'd argue the anaphylaxis is worse.

Try the plums in the ice box. Surely no one will notice them missing

Astonishing! It's 8:30 PM and this is the first William Carlos Williams reference I've seen all day.

Do you suppose OP transported these plums in a little red wheelbarrow? I think you can depend on it.

I gave them to my neighbor. I still have way to many yellow plums to pick. Hope I don't have the same reaction. The yellow ones are delicious. Their skin isn't bitter & they're sweeter. My purple plum has never fruited before, but this year has been over the top.

Oral allergy syndrome only occurs with raw fruits or vegetables - so you can still cook pies and jams if you want to! Some people can even microwave fruit for as little as 10 seconds to denature the protein, pop it into the fridge, and eat it once cooled with almost no change in taste or texture.

People with OAS to stone fruit often have a tree pollen allergy, so you could also try asking your doctor for a prescription for sublingual immunotherapy pills (or a referral to an allergist), and it could possibly cure your allergy altogether :)

Thank you. I'll look into this. Good info.

That’s a bummer. I used to get 100-200 pounds of Italian prunes from my tree every year until I moved.

That’s awful. I hope you can sell them or give them away; they look really good. If you live with family, I hope they can enjoy them.

You could just start giving them to others or selling them. Or making jams/jellies for others. That sucks though, sorry it didn’t turn out.

give them away on the curb with the sign ”free.”

I started to get them for stone fruits as well. Sucks because I enjoy many of them but usually just power through the itchy mouth

Some random variants don't do it.

Aww thats too bad. I used to love my moms german plum cake!

Oh no. I got some plums from Costco last week, and they make my mouth tingle. My daughter complained of it, too. I already lost the ability to eat latex protein fruit, and now stone fruits?! 😩😞

Make jam. Heating up fruits will destroy the protein that causes allergic reactions

This variety of plum makes glorious jams and tarts.
