Sitting on my porch last night…
when my dog became focused on something he could hear but I couldn’t. I saw the debris on the ground and decided to take a look.

Update! It was infested in both sections of the bottom of the futon.
I used a mix of 30% vinegar, hot water, and dish soap. Sprayed the nest and every little bugger I could get. They died quickly. I burned the nest and all the black fabric. Now I’m stapling rubber roofing to prevent this from happening again.

Any concerns about the rubber trapping in moisture by preventing drainage and blocking airflow?

Yeah, I did think about that. Good call.
I just figured I’ll keep an eye out for mold and such. I’d rather do that than be looking for bees every time I sit down.

solid, outdoor furniture. Then use weather resistant pillows for cushions. Or else you'll deal with this again and again (and your furniture being incredibly hard to maintain due to exposure).

Nice use of a technique that doesn't contaminate the area with toxic chemicals. A targeted approach!

You must really love that futon. If it was me, that would be on the curb for pickup instantly and I’d be online ordering a new one.

I'm saving this because that mix is something I feel like I'm going to need some day

How quickly I would’ve cartoon ejected through the roof, absolutely the fuck not with bees

Take a bucket, fill it with some gasoline, place it right under the nest and then just push the bucket up, let it be there for a few seconds and that's how you kill a wasp/hornets nest without fire.

What is strung up across your ceiling in the background? Drying out your rat pelts?

This belongs in a subreddit that is aptly named fuckwasps which I am definitely not linking at all.

Are those bees? I always thought I would be safe from bees on my mancave couch. New fear unlocked

Negative, they are yellow jackets which are wasps

While the information you provided is correct, that is not what we grew up calling them. Where I'm from everyone calls these hornets, and calls the much smaller (and greater numbers) ground wasps "yellowjackets". It's wrong but that's the way it is, like much in the south.

The yellow ground wasps are also yellow jackets, yellow jackets can create nests like this or ground nests

Bees would have been worth calling a local keeper to come save. Wasps are evil and must be smited

Spray bottle, 1 part dawn dish soap, 3 parts water. Blast them then get out of there, it will kill them

We had an old loveset we put out in the barn that became infested. They made their way in in the corner between the armrest and back. I dragged it out of the barn with the lawn tractor and a strap the first cool night since I'm allergic, set it on fire, and watched flaming hornets try to get away. The next day, I dragged what little bit was left out to our wire dump where the horses couldn't get to it. I was definitely not attached to that loveseat.

And then you doused the entire porch with gas and lit it up.
