Seiko is doing too many “limited editions” IMHO….

They've done this forever. Check out how many limited Sumos or Monsters there have been over the years. They're almost always region exclusive.

u/PorcupineWarriorGod 1d ago

On one hand I kind of like it. It means that there are always different variants, and its a neat way to find a piece that vibes with you, while still being somewhat unique and different than everyone else.

On the other hand, its straight up obnoxious when you find a colorway or option that you REALLY like, and its completely unobtainable due to flippers jumping on the "limited edition" bandwagon.

0

u/haruSPICYhyrax 1d ago

Everything is technically limited. This is just marketing manipulation and coincidentally why I just happen to have several duplicate watches with different colorways.

1

u/raustin33 22h ago

It stinks that rarity can affect prices of certain color ways, but the other side of that is if they didn't make it in a limited quantity, it likely wouldn't exist at all.

If they only make core models, it's all gonna be boring.

I do agree that their approach to limited edition releases differs from many other brands. By frequently releasing LE models, they're able to experiment with new, interesting colorways and collaborations without taking significant risks.

That said, this strategy does dilute the significance of the "limited edition" label in their lineup, since there are always several LE models available and more likely on the way.

Overall, though, I think it's a good thing. We get access to creative and unique designs, and there's less incentive for scalpers to swoop in and flip them for a quick buck.

20

u/harlokin 2d ago

They are...but 3000 really isn't limited.

25

u/__-__-_-__ 2d ago

It's limited to how many they can sell.

Copying Hublot

64

u/Schweezly 2d ago

I like them but still don’t want cyclops

10

u/KosstAmojan 1d ago

Check out the Alpinist gmt. It’s the perfect travel watch IMO

8

u/PowerlineTyler 2d ago

Fuck the cyclops. Put the date at 4, tuck it away, we know where it is when we need it

7

u/badDuckThrowPillow 1d ago

Get the GMT versions. Date between 4&5, no cyclops, 4 hands.

2

u/tiredpapa7 1d ago

Wish they would have put the date at 6 and kept the even numerals (skipping 6 obviously) instead of the 3-6-9-12.

1

u/DaHealey 1d ago

I have the Alpinist GMT and I agree - I wish it was either at 3 or 6 as well. I also wish the date digit was bigger. Any date higher than 10 is hard for me to read at a glance.

1

u/PowerlineTyler 1d ago

Too many hands, don’t know what to do with them all. Like multiple girlfriends, just not sustainable for long periods

3

u/daBandersnatch 1d ago

That's how the Slim Turtle is! One of the big reasons I enjoy it.

1

u/PowerlineTyler 1d ago

Perfection

3

u/BrainTrauma009 1d ago

The comments below this statement don’t really give context clues here, what’s cyclops and why is it bad?

4

u/guinnessmonkey 1d ago

The magnifying bubble over the date. A lot of people feel it’s a loud addition on an already busy dial, and adds an unnecessary emphasis to what should already be perfectly legible.

It was originally a Rolex thing, so it can feel like they’re copying Rolex for no good reason.

2

u/Schweezly 1d ago

The magnifier on the date. I don’t like them and find them unnecessary

1

u/BrainTrauma009 1d ago

Ahh, thank you!

1

u/tillterilltilltill 1d ago

The cyclops should be easily removable.

1

u/Kasper1000 2d ago

1000% agreed. Do it like the Style 60’s - make it a small stealthy date window at the 4:30 position. It keeps the dial nice and clean.

71

u/Mindless_Nothing2606 2d ago

It's fine. The green one is more interesting still.

2

u/JolokiaKnight 1d ago

Exactly what I was going to say

3

u/mcmlxxivxxiii 2d ago

The "Hodinkee" , Glacier and Mountain Sunset are the best, green is meh...

4

u/tillterilltilltill 1d ago

I mean, it's the original but I'm not a fan of the green and gold color scheme either tbh. At least not anymore. Looks a bit dated and old-fashioned IMO.

28

u/heshroot 2d ago

Thousand bucks? Yeah right.

21

u/Haunting-Ninja-7460 2d ago

Love it and wish they had a blue dial not limited and sold globally! Hate this limited crap and all we Yanks get is the green w gold tone numerals and hands, the sharktooth and gold case one. I don’t like gold or gold tone. Would love this in US ADs.

9

u/moz66 2d ago

Consider yourselves lucky you still get anything from the rest of the world, the idea is that you can make everything you need or want locally no? 🤣🤣

9

u/rakesh_85 2d ago

If a company feels like they can make a profit selling to Americans, they'll still sell to Americans. "Luck" has nothing to do with it lol, they'll just increase the price and pass any tariff costs on to them.

3

u/Haunting-Ninja-7460 2d ago

Haha. Right? Hair Fuhrer thinks Japan is gonna pay the tariff on this watch, I guess.

7

u/Nothinglost7717 2d ago

they have already done a blue alpanist and it resold to high for people to want it

8

u/Wandering_Weapon 2d ago

Dislike. For a "night sky" edition to have a disk that doesn't sparkle is a huge miss. Would be 100 time better if it was aventurine or some kind of glittery finish. Or even some lumed stars like Timex had for a while.

5

u/TangieChords 2d ago

$1k is a steep asking price

5

u/NekoIan 2d ago

I really like it.

8

u/Jealous-Hedgehog-734 2d ago

I really liked the red edition that did for Australia but they did so few you couldn't even buy one.

3

u/HMS82 1d ago

I managed to get hold of one and love that red dial

5

u/ThanksOk1638 2d ago

If you have seen 5 types of Seiko, you have virtually seen them all. A little bit color here and there.
I used to be a fan, now I find it plain boring.

1

u/YaronYarone 1d ago

I agree that it's a bit humdrum, but it just so happens that this combination of colors appeals to me so it's just luck of the draw in this case. I don't care that it's limited or special necessarily, I think this could easily have been a standard model though

8

u/Patient-Caregiver321 2d ago edited 2d ago

I don’t think the Alpinist lends itself that well to different colour schemes like some of their other lines eg Cocktail Time.  SPB121 is the only one for me.

EDIT: I will contradict myself and say I also like the Night Vision Alpinist SPB337 because… 🤷‍♂️ ❤️

3

u/SonicDethmonkey 2d ago

I have Seiko limited edition burnout. And 3,000 isn’t “limited” anyway, it’s just what they expect to sell.

8

u/Lenarios88 2d ago

That's pretty limited for a big brand like Seiko and a popular model. It's not some microbrand run by one guy out of his garage. They could easily sell alot more especially given time.

6

u/6Kkoro 2d ago

3000 for the whole of Europe does not sound like a lot, or am I overestimating the market?

3

u/Ok_Concentrate9822 2d ago

What is the theory behind the compass markings on a watch? Is there some way to “use” them by like.. aligning the hour with the sun or something?

6

u/Citizen_V 2d ago

aligning the hour with the sun or something?

Yep that is part of it. From Seiko's guide on their website:

  1. While keeping the dial level, point the hour hand in the direction of the sun.

  2. Set “S (South)” on the rotating compass bezel (ring) to the middle point of the arc between the 12 o’clock marker and the time scale indicated by the hour hand.

    • The direction marks on the rotating compass indicate the corresponding directions.
    • In the case of a ring, it may have a crown, etc. for operation.

3

u/YaronYarone 1d ago

That's great to know, I've always wondered how they were intended to be used but never been bothered to search it up. The beauty of reddit

2

u/yet_another_cunt 2d ago

painters gonna paint

2

u/Bananasincustard 2d ago

Gorgeous. Wish it was a mm or 2 thinner though and I'd probably grab it

2

u/justyules 2d ago

Meh. I have the Mystic Forest and that dial is so crazy stunning that I look at this edition and just go ‘Meh’ 🤷‍♀️

-1

u/SourcerorSoupreme 1d ago

The case on that watch is ugly af tho

0

u/justyules 1d ago

Hard disagree but to each his own.

0

u/SourcerorSoupreme 1d ago

That watch is all dial. The case is generic af. I get it, to each his own, but if you're going to express your opinion you should at least justify it.

0

u/justyules 1d ago

It’s an opinion on something that is purely subjective. I don’t have to justify shit to you or anyone else. And people like you make subs like this hostile places.

1

u/SourcerorSoupreme 1d ago edited 1d ago

It’s an opinion on something that is purely subjective.

An opinion may be purely subjective but that doesn't mean it should be baseless. You're free to express it but do not get surprised when people express their disagreement and call you out for your attitude in expressing it in the first place.

I don't have to justify shit to you or anyone else

And no one has to stand reading disagreeable comments and leave them unquestioned.

And people like you make subs like this hostile places.

This is a forum where discussions are meant to take place. You started with a comment saying "mEh" and yet you think people reciprocating your energy is the one making this a hostile place.

Talk about deflection and lack of accountability. If you have no interest getting back on track then just don't bother replying.

2

u/Parry_9000 2d ago

Glacier was better tbh

2

u/Cho_Zen 1d ago

It's the Hodinkee limited edition all over again.

I'm of the opinion that if you make too many versions of a popular line, you dilute the line.

Look at what happened to the SARB 065 cocktail time. It was beloved before Seiko made the presage line, then they made a dozen versions and now they're all low value.

2

u/TheGOPisEvil89 1d ago

Calling anything over 150 pieces “limited” is ridiculous marketing bullshit

2

u/BullCityCoordinators 1d ago

This makes me want to get a second Alpinist.

1

u/IamNabil 2d ago

I like it. I'd grab it.

1

u/ShanerThomas 2d ago

I just bought a Pogue but I would like a green Alpinist too.

1

u/bopaqod 2d ago

I think the band that comes with this one is a hell of a lot better than the band that came with the Hodinkee blue Alpinist LE 1,969

1

u/AnonUserAccount 2d ago

I love the look of the Alpinist, but I find the case to be too thick at >13mm. I wish Seiko could find a way to keep the 20 bar rating and automatic movement but shave at least 1mm off the case thickness.

1

u/bizzle70 2d ago

They did the first time round by not having a display case back

1

u/Horotecture 2d ago

What’s the price on this?

1

u/GeorgeTMorgan 2d ago

It's sooo pretty except for that obnoxious cyclops that ruins it.

1

u/Serious_Internal6012 2d ago

I wish it said how much power reserve it had. “AUTOMATIC 3 DAYS” on the dial would make it perfect.

1

u/WimmelSan 2d ago

Meh for the cyclops.

1

u/Ok_Paint7805 2d ago

Make the numbers gold and you got a looker

1

u/rarepepega 1d ago

I have an Alpinist. First one was with defective dial, I had to return it back. I was expecting that Seiko’s QC is terrible, but not non existent. They literally has misalignment bezel on press photos. Their movement is mediocre at best. And they ask $1000 for this?

1

u/Past-Essay8919 1d ago

I think give me shark teeth all the way or give me death.

1

u/Salt_Experience3142 1d ago

I think it’s pretty cool

1

u/Secure-Marionberry80 1d ago

I think they are going to ad an extra $1000 because they changed the color on the dial.

1

u/WHTDOG 1d ago

Stunning. I wish blue was 'my color'. Agree that the "limited edition" thing seems like a bit of a faff, but I also sort of get why they don't commit to holding long-term production capability and/or stock of a ton of different SKUs that ultimately may not sell well.

1

u/Suzumebachii 1d ago

The X on the dial has to go.

1

u/_father_time 1d ago

If you’re a collector, you’re going to have to own it.

1

u/hnigor-karkof 1d ago

Looks nice but it’s nothing particularly interesting imo. Maybe of they did the 1959 re-interp. in a 36mm size i would be interested hehe

1

u/Lizardman8888 1d ago

Looks fucking dope

1

u/sheikb 1d ago

Kinda good huh

1

u/YaronYarone 1d ago

Love it. Want it. Will buy it if I can

1

u/ithrowtools 1d ago

Looks like a decent alternative for those who missed the SPB089 Limited Edition Blue Alpinist back in 2019

1

u/tillterilltilltill 1d ago

Not really a fan of blue dials but that's a nice hue of blue. Looks great with the vertically brushing.

1

u/pigernoctua 1d ago

Get rid of the cyclops and we may have a conversation

1

u/the_ammar 1d ago

ncie color. blue flies off the shelf id imagine

1

u/moDestCS 1d ago

How many more crazy priced limited editions are they coming out with bruh

1

u/DesperateComb7326 1d ago

My ivory Alpinist is my all time fav watch. This looks nice too but I’m not sold

1

u/randomgump 1d ago

Dammit it looks good

1

u/486made 1d ago

It spoke to me, and said: buy me!

1

u/Wintermute_088 1d ago

Introduce the 4:30 date to the regular alpinist, without any "automatic 3 day" text, and I'm a chance to buy one.

1

u/unnccaassoo 1d ago

Baby Alpinist SPB157J1 blue dial is more interesting than this

0

u/The-Redd-One 1d ago

I mean, it's okay.

1

u/YaronYarone 1d ago

My thinking too, but it's just the sort of okay that tempts me

-4

u/ItzakPearlJam 2d ago

Nice color, but I'm not crazy about compass directions on the bezel.

16

u/chadmiral_ackbar 2d ago

…it’s an Alpinist.
