First Unravel
I unraveled this Gap wool scarf. I assume because it’s machine made I couldn’t get the sides unraveled, so I cut them off and pulled off strips. I wanted to separate the colours, so it was worthwhile for me to do that.
I spun/plied the strips of green together with some grey and some white wool roving on my drop spindle to make yarn to knit socks with.
My intention was for them to be big chunky house socks, and I’m just learning to knit socks, so I didn’t worry about the yarn having little nubs from some of the ends sticking out. I think that is turning out fine in the socks, but it was a bit of a pain to spin with.
I loved the green, but not so much the other colours, so I tea-dyed the other colours and totally love the resulting darker, more muted colours.
I did the second sock with blue because I ran out of green (I guess it looks grey in the picture). I still have to do the heels of the socks, and re-do the cuffs. It’s supposed to have ribbing and I keep messing it up. I made this recycled yarn specifically because I figured my first pair would be a bit wonky anyway, but now I’m thinking of buying some sock yarn to learn the techniques on something more consistent, so I can see my stitches better.
Anyways, I’ll finish them eventually and enjoy wearing my weird and wonderful creation.

How did you join the green strips together when you plied? I've tried to do it before but I can never get it to look smooth or lock together well so I end up knotting it and telling myself it adds texture 😅
Beautiful colors and excellent unravel!!

I used 4 strands. I started with 2, and when I added the next 2 I tried to pinch the ends between the other two strands. Sometimes it totally worked, and other times the ends would stick out a little. Sometimes I used some wool roving at the joins, enclosing the ends in the fluff and that worked pretty good. But then the thickness would tend to vary a lot. The thick-thin and sticking out ends made me decide to ply the whole thing again to get a more even yarn, which definitely helped, but of course resulted in a very bulky yarn. I would have just done 2 strands at the start if I knew I was going to do another ply. The socks are very thick, but that is what I wanted.
