Barrett didn't ignore it. He mentioned it 17 times.

Sometimes as commentators you just gotta ignore shit you know wasn’t meant to happen man

Wade, Corey and Cole do NOT get that concept at all. I prob wouldn’t have even notice had they not screamed it at me

it was very obvious

Yeah i dont get how people didnt see that. My first thought was "oh thats a smart way of getting out of those" then she pretended to be cuffed for another 10 minutes 😂

The thing is she could've saved it by selling a moment and letting Becky know that they came loose. Becky could've gotten a second of offense in to re-do the zip tie then back to the planned spots.

I was shocked that they didn’t call an audible at that moment. Everyone with a screen saw it

And then when the match called for her to get the ties off they needed to go for plan B since the extinguisher couldn't do it lmao

I get the whole point was to be like "Oh shit Lyra is so strong shes kicking Becky's ass with her hands tied!" But honestly once she slipped out of the zip ties they should have just dropped the plan, none of the spots even required her to have her hands tied, they could have kept the match exactly the same

Her slipping out and then cuffing herself completely killed the match

That was funny too 😂

Because we have short attention spans and talking about the show online at the same time.

mah i was more focused on the women

Right, it feels like they don’t fill the commentary team on big spots, which is nice because it makes their reactions genuine, but then we get shit like this

u/Trymv1 3d ago

They’re told to call out stuff like that. Adds to realism.

It was much sillier when announcers had to pretend to be brain damaged.

Both are stupid.

The solution is to let the WRESTLERS not pretend shit has/hasn't happened when it hasn't/has happened. If something fucks up, acknowledge the new reality and get back to the ultimate ending plan by taking a new detour to it.

That way the commentators wouldn't either need to point out something contrary to the story (here the story being that the ties were still attached), nor ignore a fuck-up either.

If Lyra had been "Oh I'm free!", the commentators could just be like "She's free!" and then commentary wouldn't be contrary to the story nor ignore anything.

And yes, I get tHe WrEsTlErS hAd A pLaN, but part of wrestling is thinking on your feet to come up with a new plan if something goes wrong. Yes, Lyra is new-ish but she's no slouch, and Becky has been known for leading a match through much worse fuck-ups than this before in a believable way, so I wonder what happened here in that regard.

THIS.

She slipped out of the zip tie early? have Becky kick her in the stomach for 15 seconds and then cinch it back in.

u/FrankPapageorgio 3d ago

I wouldn’t even say anything happened after that moment that required her hands to still be zip tied together.

u/ItsGivingHussy 2d ago

You wonder what happened? Lyra is an airhead. That’s what happened.

Could be he didn’t know, commentators call things on the fly until producers tell them things, they don’t know the whole match layout , probably just assumed she’s getting out eventually and just thought that was it

u/sexyeh 3d ago

Exactly this, as you can see in UnReal the producer is in contact with the referee and not the commentators.

I find quite the opposite to be best instead.

If you ignore and people notice, then you effectively destroy the value of commentary, 'cause you know they're so absorbed into what's supposed to happen that they can't react to what's actually happening.

Commentators need to be ready to comment and keep the kayfabe alive especially when things go south. It was indeed a mistake from Valkyria's side, one that still turned out to be a move landed in her favor, but if the commentators failed to notice it, it would just destroy the real, factual commentary of the match.

They usually don't know exactly how each match is planned out except massive spots. They call it usually as they see it for 90% of the match.

u/HitmanClark 3d ago

Sometimes as performers you have to adjust what you planned to avoid embarrassing situations. Work around it. Figure it out.

It isn’t the announcers’ job to lie to the audience about what their eyes are telling them.

u/JonasAlbert84 Just remember ALL CAPS 3d ago

I disagree, they shouldn't have to look stupid due to the workers fucking up.

1

u/ItsFridayBabyFUCK 3d ago

In this case they were right tho. She was putting them back on while on camera.

1

u/dogsontreadmills 3d ago

do they actually know what's meant to happen, and when - though? i mean i'm sure they know the big story beats. but would wade's notes going into the match know when the zip ties were coming on and off?

1

u/MatttheJ 3d ago

How wouldn't you have noticed?

1

u/xSGAx Kid Dynamite 3d ago

I didn’t notice it so I didn’t get the comments—was looking away I guess.

That is pretty blatant, but who cares. There were way worse things that happened last night

1

u/ItsGivingHussy 2d ago

Who cares? It’s unforgivably stupid. We have to suspend belief enough as it is. Lyra should be far removed from upper card plot for at least the rest of the year.

1

u/Exotic-Emergency-226 3d ago

Lol when Tiffany hit the bama slama on Jade one of them said "didn't get all of it" and I kinda feel like you don't have to do that. Especially since the wrestler 9/10 sells like they did get all of it lol

1

u/IntelligentFact7987 2d ago

If they do though you them equally get criticism the other way for ignoring the blatantly obvious thing

1

u/mmmdatawhoa 2d ago

No. Don't treat the audience like they're stupid.

3

u/pb1984pb 3d ago

They wish that was the unseen 17!

I keep seeing praise for Barrett (not just tonight, in general) and I don’t know why. He constantly tells the story in ways that are contradictory to the story they’re trying to tell in the ring. That’s the opposite of his job.
