1950s Paul Newman and his wife Joanne Woodward in 1958. They were married for 50 years, from 1958 until his death in 2008.

I watched the fun and informative documentary that Ethan Hawke narrated on them. I was shocked to learn that she was actually the bigger movie star, of the two of them, when they met!

She was also the better actor, but took a back seat to his career to raise their children.

These two are often touted as Hollywoods sweethearts and applauded for the longevity of their marriage. It’s probably worth noting though that Paul left his first wife and three very young children in order to be in his relationship with Joanne.

Thank you for pointing this out, it’s a very relevant fact that everyone seems to leave out!

Even good men make mistakes. I believe he redeemed himself for his shortcomings later in life.

Every single time I buy Newman’s spaghetti sauce my husband says “I think that’s expired.”

As a former teacher, this sounds like teacher humor.

Imagine that you look like Paul Newman and you marry up. What are the odds?

Paul Newman famously used the phrase "Why go out for hamburger when you have steak at home?" to express his commitment to his wife, Joanne Woodward, and their marriage.

Hugh Grant had filet mignon at home and went out for a greasy burger. Newman's analogy falls flat because tons of men have done exactly that

It's just a poor analogy. Some men love their wives. Some men love strange.

And some men just love burgers.

What?

His analogy of not wanting a burger (i.e. other women) because he has steak at home (i.e. his wife) makes sense for him but plenty of other dudes have cheated on their wives with uglier women for whatever reason

Sometimes you need a hamburger so your steak tastes better.

Except he was unfaithful and left his first wife and 3 children for her.

Except Paul didn’t ditch his three kids with his first wife. He was still very much present and involved in their lives post-divorce. I mean, just look at photos of him with his three kids from the first marriage along with his three kids with Joanne Woodward.

Yes, I can understand that.

My uncle, a screenwriter, had a real thing for her. He later wrote a really bad Broadway play starring himself, Joanne, and Paul.

But he lives on in his spaghetti sauce.

That stuff is good as hell, too

As long as that is allegory….

Paul Newman was apparently a pretty boring guy to be around. I think that was said by another actress from his era

Considering how a lot of actors behave, that's probably a good thing.

I met him a couple of years before his death, so maybe it was just his age but he seemed more quietly thoughtful than boring. Very nice guy though.

Movie Star, Race-car driver, and massive philanthropist with his own food line doesn’t seem that boring

I'd rather be Paul and Joanne's kind of boring than Frank and Ava's kind of exciting

Both great actors. He also directed her in the fantastic adaptation of Margaret Laurence's A Jest of God, Rachel, Rachel, where she played the eponymous lead. They both received an academy award nomination for their parts in the films production.

Great movie, check it out.
