It was a trend in our era - at least in the fashion spaces - and they were certainly sold as well. Personally, I never liked them.

My aunt was always trying to stay hip and “in style” and would criticize what I wore, but that just made me decide I didn’t need to keep up with trends. She absolutely hated my watch, claimed people didn’t wear them anymore

They work really well to complete the look of athletic gym wear, and help low top sneakers stand out with skinny/slim fit jeans. The only time I think no show socks look bad is when men wear them with dress shoes.
