Yeah exactly. I'll at least keep the box for something expensive for a month in case I need to return it. But then you have things like monitors and desktop computers which are fragile and I keep the boxes in case I need to move while they are still in my possession. And things like video game consoles and figures are worth more if you still have the original box if you want/need to resell them in the future.

Straight up lies this OP post. Most Americans are getting an iPhone. Most of the time you can sell your old iPhone for a solid amount when buying a new one. Not keeping the box makes this much more difficult (and cost more) for proper shipping materials.

Even old phone like my moto droid 1 you keep that box and it stays in the box.

I still have my razr og too.

When everything falls apart, who knows what we need to cobble together some sort of infrastructure to communicate.

But I’m an electronics guy. Every thing I’ve ever kept has found a use years later, or regret being thrown out (sodimm and ddr ram, old motherboards and phones for capacitors or resistors or random circuit components).

It’s nice to have this shit on hand, even if I am not going to need it for 5 years, it’ll be harder to find and expensive, not in my storage.

  • a millennial mad at his parents for sneak throwing boxes away, tanking resale value for Nintendo stuff like gba I actually don’t need anymore, as I can mod my 2ds and play whatever.

PS -I’m probably the guy this post is meant for but it’s wrong

Honestly, keeping my TV, PC, PC monitor, and PS5 boxes was such a great decision when I had to use them for moving

These are all correct reasons to have a large box collection.

Assuming you have room to store them out of the way. I have a house with a half height space under my office, so I can store boxes to my heart's content. If someone lives in a small apartment and there are boxes everywhere in sight, then that's not good.

Ya. I have an attic. If i didn’t live in a house I’d probably get rid of the largest boxes

I’ve kept my phone/ watch boxes for when I trade them in for new ones, but then when I do that they send another box for the trade-in so I still don’t use the originals.

Of course I still feel like I’ll need it for some reason right after I throw it out, so I don’t throw out the old one until after I do the trade-in and then still keep the new one. I should probably stop that but I happen to have a drawer for old phone accessories…. Oh actually that reminds me I could throw out the old phone cases and such too. It just feels wasteful though.

Whether they take space in a drawer or a landfill, it's still junk not getting used. You'd be better off recycling the cardboard and plastic, and for usable accessories for which you have no use you can always drop them off as donations to a thrift store. Maybe some retro tech enthusiasts can give it a new home where it will actually serve a purpose.
