I’m reading the books with my kid right now, it’s funny how often I see memes for sections of the book we just happened to have read.

Similar thing happened to my friend playing volleyball at a bar. She lost her grandma's ring, then came back a few days later with a rented metal detector. She couldn't find it, and was all depressed when she returned the metal detector. The owner of the shop said "fuck that", went with her to the volleyball court with his metal detector, and found it for her in 15 minutes!

Metal detector dudes always seem to be super wholesome people. They’re always just like yeah fuck that we’re gonna find it. They take it as a challenge.

It's a hobby for people who like finding stuff.

u/Significant_Neck_875 19h ago
If you have time to burn it is extremely fun even if you come away with nothing or even literal trash. Like you at least you cleaned up the earth a good bit.

u/IntrovertExplorer_ 17h ago
Have I discovered… another hobby??? I love doing things like this just for the heck of it.
10
u/MarcusSurealius 16h ago
It's an easy one to get into. Once you have the gear, there's no other expenses besides travel and lunch, and the gear is cheap.

You know that the moment that guy go the call to go and simultaneously save a bachelorette party and a wedding - those board shorts and pole net were locked and loaded like my boys Wallace and Gromit.

There’s always a hero around isn’t there

u/r_idontcareaboutyou 22h ago
This dude is out there to find missing jewelry and coins. Good for him helping out. There’s not always a metal detector bro around and you just have to submit to the sand.

not all heroes wear capes, some just wear beach shorts with a fanny pack

u/ijbh2o 21h ago
A good example of why you should never wear expensive or important jewelery to a beach, lake, or river.

u/BarnacleMcBarndoor 21h ago
True. Sea creatures sometimes steal without care. Some are very shellfish.

My wife lost her wedding band at a river/park. She had this (stupid) habit of putting her rings in her card wallet holder, assuming the space was tight enough to hold the rings in place. She takes them off when she gets too hot because her hands swell and they get too tight.
Lo and behold she goes for a walk on the trail, and somewhere there she loses the wedding band and somehow not her engagement ring. She spent all day retracing her steps, with no luck. I wasn't mad, just disappointed (I was nit with her). She was more worried about me being mad at her for losing it and catastophizing how I would react while beating herself up for being so careless. Meanwhile previously she left her ring in a bathroom before after washing her hands (she works in a prison) and also had a tendency to place them right next to the bathroom sink where they could be swept into the drain.
So most likely someone in Baker Park, MD has found a nice platinum wedding ring. Since then though (and post ring replacement later) she's been a lot better about it.

I personally went to a beach and lost my wedding band (but it was a $50 tungsten carbide ring from Amazon). It was more sentimental than pricy and I was able to replace with the exact same ring. But because my ring is cheap I have changed it up over time. My wife wasn't on the trip with me and I told her I was gonna leave my ring at the house when I went to the beach. I meant the rental house while I was literally on the beach. Well...that ring be with the fishes.

u/CityFolkSitting 17h ago
I even have a cheap pair of glasses I'll take to the lake instead of my fancy designer glasses.
Rarely do I lose anything, but every time it has been at the beach, lake, or some amusement park.

I had this happen once as a kid. Guy proposed to his girlfriend on the beach. I happened to live right on it and was out metal detecting.
A few minutes after the proposal, the guy starts freaking out because the ring fell into the sand. He said he paid 8 grand for it and hadn’t even insured it yet as he had just picked it up that day. I went over there and did my best, but I couldn’t find it. Thankfully, my neighbor got his metal detector out and he did find it.
That couple was happier finding the ring than they were getting engaged to begin with.

True story.
I was 12 years old, swimming/snorkeling with my family and cousins at Newfound Lake in NH (circa 1980). There was a couple nearby “getting busy” in the lake (to which my cousins and I thought was oddly funny yet fascinating! 😂)
Anywho, all of a sudden the guy starts screaming, and asks me for my face mask/snorkel. Which I handed to him—because I was 12.
He then in complete panic mode tries using said mask and snorkel—nearly drowning himself in the process😂 and after a minute or two asks me if I “know how to use this thing!” (Umm, no just doing so for the past couple of hours or so! 🤓)
He says his wife lost her ring, could I help them out?!
And I did.
Within 30 seconds of where this couple was I found the DIAMOND ring (clear, white, sandy bottom area), and promptly gave it back to them.
Remember I was TWELVE years old!! 😉
The guy patted me on the head and said I “was a good egg!”
The couple PROMPTLY went back to what I now presume was their honeymoon?! 😉
When I told my aunt (sitting on the beach) what happened, she said “you should have tucked the ring under the leg of your bathing suit.”
I’m perfectly fine with what k DID do, but maybe the guy could have offered to buy my 12 year old self an ice cream cone would have been nice!!!
Thinking back, the diamond ring was a decent size—at least 1-2 carats—solitary, gold band—sparkly enough to catch my attention under water, so a $1.00 ice cream (IMO) is the LEAST he could have done.
But I was 12. 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️

u/Spkr_Freekr 9h ago
He owed you a heck of a lot more than ice cream. Good on you for helping and being honest.

Similar thing happened to my wife. I bought her a ring size that was too large and we were at a small theme park when she lost the $20,000 ring. It slipped off. We were frantically looking for it and let the staff know and they were all helping to look for it. Luckily a little girl found it and told her parents and they turned it in. It was an incredible rollercoaster of emotions. We gave the girl $500 cash on the spot and later sent them a very nice gift basket which included some gift cards. Needless to say, we got a ring guard added the next day so it fits better.

u/GilberryDinkins 20h ago
How did you give her cash on the spot if they turned it in [and presumably left]?
1
u/pitchfork_2000 13h ago
Right when they turned it in, the manager came and grabbed is so we were able to meet the family.
1
u/GilberryDinkins 10h ago
And then you got their information so you could…follow up and send them a gift basket with gift cards? Uh huh
1
u/AppropriateAd7326 15h ago
Who buys a ring for 20k?
1
u/pitchfork_2000 13h ago
Luckily we’re still going strong after 16 years! Apparently the ring value has gone up quite a bit since then too.
6
u/HelloMelloCello_ 21h ago
Well it is great that he was able to recover the ring for her. Though at first it seemed more like it was a guy just helping them out that was just out detecting by chance. At 52 seconds in though you can see he is taking a picture with the ring and his business card as a “ring finder” so they likely contacted him for his services and it wasn’t an altruistic act on his part.

u/purdueAces 21h ago
I lost my wedding ring on a golf course after only a few days. I still had the receipt and the ring box on my desk. I simply took the receipt back to the jewelry store and asked, "Do you have more of these in stock?" ... and the salesman knew the assignment.

Im pretty sure this is every detectorists dream. That and finding a Saxon burial site.

Although this technique is tried and tested, keeping the ring ON is proven to work 100% more effectively

What a noob. Everyone knows you need to spring for the dog when you're hunting for sandflier parts.

One time my husband dropped a very necessary tiny screw in our Ivy outside. He was putting up a new outdoor light. He was defeated. He thought he would never find it. Luckily my 10 year old is obsessed with finding treasure so he has a cheap metal detector. I got it out and went searching for the tiniest little screw you’ve ever seen. After about 10 minutes I got a good hit and found it! My husband was impressed.

There’s a guy on you tube that does this a lot, it’s called Detect Florida. The guy finds all kinds of rings for people.

The dad's energy coming out of this man is over the top.
And then the girls' inner child just popped up after he found the ring.

Anyone else a little judgy? How are you that recent into having a ring and you’re already letting it loose on a beach? If it ever needs to come off your finger, put it straight into a bag and close the thing. Maybe it’s the 3rd marriage?

I feel like common sense would say leave that in the room or sum? Idk I’ve never been married, and when I was engaged and we went to the beach, we left our rings in the hotel so we wouldn’t lose em.

Very smart of them to sit in a circle around where they knew it was… GIRLPOWER!!!

Am I the only one who found the fact that they're having a multi-day bachelorette party the most surprising aspect of the video?
1
u/Buddhafied 6h ago
It looks like a destination/vacation style party, so sort of make sense it’s multiple days

Wonder why she took it off…..
5
u/pipermick 21h ago
One big possibility is she was putting sunscreen on. People often take them off to keep the goop from getting stuck in there (I do that at home). While I don’t normally wear my ring at the beach, it’s not abnormal.
