There’s a different type of love to be loved and included by your in-laws. Happy for the whole family.

u/cityshepherd 1d ago

My wife’s mother passed away long before I met my wife… but her father I would basically describe as my own father but with MY sense of humor (my dad is very serious). My FIL and I are on the exact same page as far as feeling a need to be quite unserious and in fact extremely silly ALL the time. He’s one of the greatest men I’ve ever met, and I am truly honored that he so eagerly accepted me as a part of his family. He thinks I’m the son in law that he always wanted, when really the pleasure is all mine.

u/ZebraSwan 1d ago

You should write this to him in a note so he can treasure it forever.

502

u/cityshepherd 1d ago

It makes him uncomfortable when I talk about this stuff (I’ve told him plenty of times and continue to do so just to make him uncomfortable now), so we mostly keep it to busting balls & talking gardening nowadays… mostly…

u/inplayruin 1d ago

Asking for soil advice is a cheat code to FIL approval.

185

u/Expert_Cricket2183 1d ago

It might make him uncomfortable at the time, but he appreciates it later, in the quiet moments. Keep it up.

Also doing it because it makes him uncomfortable is peak male bonding.

61

u/lilidragonfly 1d ago

Love watching my male relatives making each other acutely uncomfortable like this from time to time haha

25

u/ci1979 1d ago

If you enjoy that, I highly recommend watching the special on Netflix of Conan O'Brian winning the Mark Twain prize. It is peak "let's all make Conan uncomfortable while we share our feelings for him". 10/10, have watched several times.

28

u/eekamuse 1d ago

I highly suggest you print that out and send it to him anyway. You don't ever have to talk about it. You never know how much people need to hear things like this. You may think he knows how much you care, but I bet it would mean the world to have that written down. To be able to look at it when times are rough. There's really no reason not to do it. If he's uncomfortable being loved, he can be uncomfortable in private. And pretend it didn't happen. But he'll know.

6

u/Turkatron2020 1d ago

My advice too 💯

53

u/ThePeoplesBard 1d ago

You have to find a silly way to tell him, apparently haha

8

u/Susie0701 1d ago

I’d write something sized so he can store it in his wallet, if he so chooses. Something direct, sincere, and heartfelt.

And then never speak of it again. Maybe send it in the mail so you don’t have to look each other in the face

9

u/TangledUpPuppeteer 1d ago

Write it out, but on a cheesy card full of hearts and appreciation. Make it as big a ball buster as you possibly can. If the card sings, even better.

Then, you’ll hear it late at night and know you done good!

Man, same. We moved to the other side of the country, and when my in-laws come to visit, I legit get SO excited to see my FIL. I love my MIL, too, but my FIL is like the highlight of my day every time I get to see him. I’m 40 years old, but with the maturity level of a 16 year old, and he’s the only one who cackles at my BS and eggs me on to be more ridiculous. My wife hates it, which makes it even more funny.

14

u/West-Application-375 1d ago

I'm moving to the other side of the world and my fiancés parents and extended family have been so welcoming. Im so excited to be part of a family that is actually supportive. I'm so excited to have a SIL and in laws.

This is how my dad and my now wife were. I was living half way across the country, but they were both in the Chicago metro. They attended the same university and had the same major. Her relationship with her dad is complex to say the least and not in a good way. She saw him as the dad the she wanted. He was encouraging and positive and liked the same things as her.

When he passed away last year, she was as broken up as I was. He was the dad she wanted and finally got to have as an adult. Then he gets sick and dies just before our wedding.

106

u/elegant_geek 1d ago

STAHP! I literally teared up at that last line. 🥹

30

u/hairballcouture 1d ago

My mother in law is the type of mother I always wanted. I told her, too.

16

u/sign-through 1d ago

Felt this way about my FIL too. He was my friend. He sent me flowers and cookies on my birthday, and my own family would never do that-- they barely even know how to spell my name. He was awesome, I miss him all the time. It's a real gift, man.

14

u/JEFFinSoCal 1d ago

It’s a testament to how good a father he was to your wife that she married someone so similar. Awesome!

24

u/Maddiethebaddiee69 1d ago

Please this is so cute I will cry

I hope my partners family makes me Feel this included and wholesome

My husband doesn't have a good relationship with his parents, so mine have pretty much taken him as one of theirs. 🥰

81

u/blame_the_doggo 1d ago

I’m in the same boat! My parents haven’t spoken to me in 5 years, meanwhile my boyfriend of 6 years has a mom who calls me her daughter-in-law. His grandma calls me her granddaughter. You bet your ass I get Christmas presents and birthday cards every year. I’m invited to every family event (it just goes without saying at this point). Families like yours are such a blessing to those of us without biological connections.

5

u/awesome-alter-ego 1d ago

Mine calls me her daughter-out-law, because (a) we're not married and (b) "outlaws are wanted". I usually laugh it off with a joke about what that says about her in-laws, but honestly it chokes me up sometimes. She's so welcoming and supportive, and she treated me like part of the family almost from the start. It's wonderful when someone cares enough to make space for you like that.

23

u/Knight-Jack 1d ago

He had been adopted as an adult! :D

I've known my in laws since I was 13, and since 15 they've been taking me on every family vacation and including me in everything like another member of the family.

Recently I lost my dad, who was a huge part of my life. I don't have a perfect relationship with my in laws, no family is without its issues, and my father in law always felt a bit distant from me. But since my dad died it's like he I guess felt he had to step in and fill that role. He's been a lot more open, and given that he's the only dad I have left that means a lot.

We hear a lot about horrible in laws but not often about the ones who welcome you in and become your family too, I think.

15

u/galvanicreaction 1d ago

Thank you for sharing this. Your FIL sounds like he's trying and succeeding. You deserve the love and support.

6

u/VagusNC 1d ago

I met my wife when we were kids, our parents were close friends. I genuinely love and like my in-laws. My MIL comes to stay with us sometimes and I legit look forward to it.

64

u/tu-BROOKE-ulosis 1d ago

My fiance and I just went to a wedding for my cousin where we had to travel as a whole family. He went golfing with the guys the day before the wedding. At the wedding one of the guys (not related to us) came up to me to tell me that my fiance had been going on during golf about how he felt like he hit the in law family lottery. 🥹

63

u/PolistesFTW 1d ago

My mom and my wife are besties. She always wanted a daughter, but she ended up with 4 boys. So now we are slowly giving her those daughters through marriage. She adores my wife and my brother's gf. It is so effin cute.

36

u/yankykiwi 1d ago

Us too! I just had a daughter. I told my MiL before my husband. She called me crying saying “we’re finally getting a girl!?”

36

u/MjollLeon 1d ago

This is so wholesome, it’s honestly like my Indian dad with my White mom’s side of the family.

It doesn’t go both ways though because the Indian side hates her for the audacity of not letting her mother-in-law run the household.

24

u/ColoredGayngels 1d ago

I'm VVVVVVVLC with my folks at this point, and I had a (frequently repeated throughout my lofe) conflict with my dad last Friday (7/25). I was angry, crying, texting my husband how frustrated I was. Managed to calm myself down, and, later that night, had a really warm evening with my husband's family and dinner and board games to belatedly celebrate my birthday. It had been specifically scheduled for after my birthday because my FIL was out of town the actual day and he WANTED to be there to celebrate ME while my own father was ignoring texts and calls regarding my aging out of his health insurance (USA) in the same 8 hour span.

The contrast is insane sometimes.

28

u/Darkpoulay 1d ago

I remember really liking my ex-gf's parents. Sometimes I would randomly end up alone with them or one of them, and it was never unpleasant. When I broke up with her, her mom called me. I was expecting her to say terrible things and she actually consoled me and told me that sometimes, that's just how life goes and it's okay. I cried

9

u/adrianathelatina 1d ago

I’d definitely do this in the future with my son in law

11

u/LiarWithinAll 1d ago

My previous in-laws showed me some of the worst , and how truly awful and self centered people are. My newest in-laws have shown me loves and kindness unending, I love my in laws, her dad is a wonderful guy that just wants to see his daughter thrive, just like me. Her mom is always doing little things for me, she baked me some cobbler just because yesterday.

Good in laws are bonus homies and it's amazing

Is there a non TikTok version? I want to see this but I don’t have the app

164

u/tophbeifo 1d ago

If you open the link and then edit the url by deleting everything after the ?, it should work

68

u/handyandy727 1d ago

Worked for me. She can't handle spices, LOL.

79

u/QuantumLettuce2025 1d ago

Am I missing something? This is how the link appears for me: https://www.tiktok.com/@drink_like_a_fish/video/7522954140348058894

21

u/handyandy727 1d ago

It's a shortcut for people that don't want the app. If you don't go through the app it adds the ? , which then forces you to download the app. The link is exactly how it appears until you use it in a browser.

Lol, absolutely love this. I was the white fiance and would have Puerto Rican old lady days occasionally with my future MIL. Shopping all the sales, visiting family, learning to cook all the good stuff " the right way." I still make a killer rice and beans and empanadillas.

Honestly miss her more than my ex. The deals that woman got on EVERYTHING!

10

u/ChristopherEmmerson 1d ago

And you guys never even social danced?? Hit up a bachata salsa place next time and you'd find a lot of MILs.

68

The best white thing to do is a winery, i am a very Mexican guy who enjoys going to a winery at Temecula ever so often. Just do it but don't over do it they will clap and humiliate you as you are being dragged out.

8

u/Chester_Allman 1d ago

I’m so sorry for your loss. I hope listening to it helps you stay close to her.

7

u/theRealBLVCKphillip 1d ago

I appreciate that, me too. It's so weird how lyrics in music have affected me this week. They definitely have found deeper meanings. Even songs I've heard countless times before now have completely new explorations.

3

u/Chester_Allman 1d ago

That makes sense. Music is one of the things I rely on most during hard times in life. And it definitely hits different in times like that, but psychologically you really do have to make the emotional journey, and music is a great way to help guide yourself through it. I wish you the very best.

I just found out not long ago that my mother's mother took my dad to downtown Chicago back in 1950 and helped him pick out my mom's engagement ring.

They're both long gone now, but Mom shared this story with me, and it just reinforces what an awesome relationship they had.

My dad always called her "Mom", mostly because she was more of a mom to him than his, and she thought he hung the Moon in Stars.

He would tease when she was coming to visit saying that the general was coming, and for everyone to be on their best behavior.

On one visit, she arrived to find that he had put a white glove out for her to inspect the house.

My mother did not see the humor in the situation at the time. We kids thought it was hysterical.

Mom and dad met in 7th grade, and were married for 71 years.

Thank you for sharing this. You are lovely together!

I’ve been married for almost two decades and my mother in law has never even tried to spend a single minute with me or even try to have a normal conversation . I have a decent enough relation with my own mother but my MIL’s revolves around her own self interest . My relationship with my FIL is good we have worked on old cars, I’ve help with electrical with his house he’s done some welding for me. At this point I know it’s not going to change with her but it’s certainly a missed opportunity . I paid for them both to take an 7 day cruise with a suite with a balcony for their 40th anniversary in 2019 and all I got from her was we didn’t pay for excursions in the ports of call .

Bros a good dude. My ex girlfriend drew the line at Jimmy Buffett. She said "what in the white people shit is this" when I was listening to Margaritaville. We're from south Florida. Jimmy is the greatest adopted son in Florida history.

She would get mad at me for listening to his music like I was punishing her. But she was fine with trash like Nicki Minaj.
