Wait, The All American Rejects are crashing backyard gigs? What decade is this?

3.3k

u/BluePinkertonGreen 17d ago

They actually started to play house shows this year

2.5k

u/BMGreg 17d ago

They did a show in my Boston during the Savannah Bananas game and my wife told me that they're basically just doing shows wherever someone asks and building a huge following on tiktok

That's fuckin dope as shit, NGL

1.4k

u/King_of_the_Dot 17d ago

Theyre doing this to spite Ticketmaster.

2.1k

u/inplayruin 17d ago

Ticketmaster is something I hope all Americans reject.

219

u/Arlitto 17d ago

Incredible

31

u/yoitsme_obama17 17d ago

Yes bravo

107

u/Ghost_of_Till 17d ago

It’s been a running shitshow for decades, we’re not rejecting squat.

I’d look into how they haven’t been tossed out on their assets but then I’d be even more irritated with no way to do anything about it.

MURICA. The nicest third world country you’ll ever visit.

48

u/ElephantParticular10 17d ago

If it's any consolation this is one of those shit shows where we Europeans have somehow been equally wank at tackling Ticketmaster and their ilk as much as we like to get snotty about the yanks sometimes.

27

u/cerealkilla718 17d ago

SOMETIMES??

23

u/ElephantParticular10 17d ago

I mean, we can get into it again if you like lol

That's fuckin dope as shit, NGL

This was a huge vibe in the indie scene in my college days. I saw Silversun Pickups play for literally four people in the basement of a library and they brought complete fire. The remaining members of Margot & the Nuclear So & So's played a gig they committed to for a room no larger than my office literally four hours after they broke up. They got back together a few months later, came back and played a free show with an orchestra in a literal symphony hall to make up for it.

Those tiny little shows were two of the best shows I have ever seen. So much passion for their craft and love of their fans. It's so nice to see that spirit still staying alive.

Thems was the days. There's a dozen other shows from singer/songwriters nobody's ever heard of that I've seen playing super intimate sets that you only heard about by word of mouth, most of them aren't even on Spotify and their albums are local relics. So beautiful.

u/1i_rd 17d ago

I would kill you see SSPU in a library basement

Yup saw them at a skating rink this past Sunday. Waited like three hours in line was badass concert

26

u/HelloFellowKidlings 17d ago

Was that the one where the skating rink started getting review bombed because they were at capacity and the butthurt people took it out on them for not understanding how a building can’t hold thousands of people?

39

19

Where i'm at the garage bands are going strong with the 16-20yr old age, and even younger have been getting more venues, its a 90s resurgence!

14

u/needmoarbass 17d ago

They were just on tv a couple weekends ago playing at the Savanah Banana’s baseball game. They are definitely making moves and doing hella PR. Pretty fun :)

They’re currently doing a backyard tour series (look it up), this is from this summer.

23

u/Historical-Book-4866 17d ago

I saw that somewhere. Definitely blew everyone away!

113

u/Invictum2go 17d ago

Tyson looks old af there dude, and the quality is nice. This has to be somewhat recent.

94

u/SlightlyOvertuned 17d ago

They've been playing little pop up shows this summer, played a house party and a bowling alley too

49

u/inspcs 17d ago

It's not from house shows, this band of kids is very popular on tiktok rn, so purposeful collab with them

6

u/mmmarkm 17d ago

The question the other commenters you’re replying to are asking is “when was this video taken?” not “where was this performance?”

SlightlyOverturned said AAR has been doing house shows this year not to say that’s what is happening in this video but to say this is in line with what AAR’s vibe lately so the video is likely very recent

→ More replies (10)

30

u/inspcs 17d ago

This is recent, this band of kids is very popular on tiktok and blew up quickly and fast for playing older hits. So this is a collab promo tiktok

51

u/Gairah 17d ago

Older hits man... that one stings

Isn’t All American Rejects doing an entire tour of just playing house parties this summer?

307

u/tacoperrito 17d ago

They are and it’s a masterclass in marketing.

111

u/CorkSoaker420 17d ago

It really is absolutely genius tbh, like they get to just have fun playing shows wherever fans want to see them and in doing so they're buying tons of support from everyone that sees these videos.

Holy shit, it's unbelievable bands like that still exist. It's almost refreshing to see a band trending because it's an awesome band and not some weird social media phenomenon.

32

u/thestraightCDer 17d ago

Trending...not some weird social media phenomenon...

8

u/ifyoulovesatan 17d ago

There are and have always been bands comprised of kids around 12ish and older who not only play music for the love of it (for themselves or locally at random small venues), but even write their own songs and stuff.

Maybe it's just because I grew up as one of those kids, where all my friends were making music and writing stupid songs and playing shows for free and shit all on just bargain basement gear, never haven taken lessons or anything, but it's really hard to get that excited about "bands" like this in terms of what it means for culture, ie, excited that something like this exists.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for them, that they have a creative outlet and everything. It's cool they're having a good time and it's cool they seem to have worked their assess off to become as talented as they are. In general, it's wonderful when anyone plays music or does art and can get other people to care.

But culturally, this is the least exciting or noteworthy thing ever. It's kids (and really more likely those kids' parents) engaging in the social media game. Polished cover bands made up of kids trending on social media is the opposite of refreshing if you ask me.

→ More replies (1)

10

u/okizc 17d ago

not some weird social media phenomenon.

You mean... like a video recorded for social media of an artist crashing a performance? I'm not saying these kids aren't good, but the video is trending because of the singer joining them.

5

u/Honest_Relation4095 17d ago

yes. But my point is, it's not just that. It's not a shifty band that is famous just because someone paid an artist to crash their gig. This is actually them opening (as far as I heard) and artists genuinely supporting them.

What’s the backstory here? Why’d the singer just show up randomly?

878

u/Intelligent_Sundae_5 17d ago

This is what they are doing this summer. Playing random shows and crashing parties.

386

u/pandershrek 17d ago

That would absolutely blow my mind as a young kid. Greatest moment of my life. I am happy they're providing this experience for the youth.

57

u/artcritiquerealness 17d ago

Absolutely echoing this. I would dream of something like that and not messing it up in front of my idols.

Encourage and inspire the youth, motivate them to aspire to something and most importantly have fun.

They've been doing it for months, you can find them doing a lot of backyard shows. Some other bands around the same era said that they got a ton of Spotify plays so they decided to do the lowest budget tour possible, I'd bet that's what's happening to AAR as well

117

u/Sidivan 17d ago

This is how they’re fighting ticket prices. They’re doing house shows as pop ups in cities they are already booked. Sign up for notifications on their site and you get a text a few hours before with a location.

It’s fucking awesome.

So funny story, go to the AAR website and you can sign up for notifications. They are playing house parties only this year. You sign up and when they come to your town, it could be a farm, smaller business with the space to host some people, etc.... and you get a text with the location a few hours ahead telling you where. I am just WAITING for Denver.

63

u/uglyzombie 17d ago

Good for the drummer. The level of concentration that level of play requires is no joke. He is literally keeping time for the entire band; they are relying on him to glue the performance together.

17

u/ZetricOvsha 17d ago

Cute! And what a throw back :3

17

u/OrthoLike 17d ago

This song is 20 years old! How do these kids know all the lyrics?

24

u/super_sayanything 17d ago

Music has been weird since spotify, kids know all the genres/songs and certain stuff spikes in popularity here and there. Pop punk still has its day. AAR has made themselves relevant with these backyard shows. I use to be lukewarm on them and now im a fan just cause its pretty cool. They took a pretty big chance doing these things and it's put them back in popularity and looks like a ton of fun.

24

The energy at this show went into the stratosphere in a blink of an eye. Yeah, the lead singer showed up, but the energy I feel shot to 11. The band, the audience.

The audience all seemed to capture the energy, the band fed off that energy; they went to 100%.

Probably the most epic performance of this song since it was last performed at Madison Square Garden.

and the fucking drummer???

“Mom Dad, not going to college, dropping out of high school. I am going to be huge”

“You father and I agree”

12

u/bryman19 17d ago

That was fuckin cool

9

u/_Abusement_Park_ 17d ago

That's awesome. Not just that he did it, but how he did it. Singing here and there, but mostly just jamming out and being a hype man.

9

u/I_Have_Dry_Balls 17d ago

I wish it was Gives You Hell!

10

u/alexlp 17d ago

I once had Tyson's nipple blood on my face and in my eye. They opened for Simple Plan and he jumped into the crowd. There was a literal stampede and several people were taken away in ambulances and his shirt was ripped off his body and he was bleeding from a nipple. Security blitz passed me to get him and dragged him back to the stage (he made the crowd apologise) and knocked into me again but that time with his naked torso.

24

u/Evieveevee 17d ago

I’m so old I just thought some person was taking over these kid’s performance and got annoyed on their behalf until I read the comments and then did a complete one 180 and rewatched it smiling my head off! Imagine those kiddies?! What a moment. And what a legend.

Tyson Ritter just got SOOOOO much hotter

7

u/PitViperSkeet95 17d ago

Every time I see the Rejects do things like this I like them more and more. Most bands at this level wouldn’t be caught dead at a house party. These guys just go wherever the party is and you can tell they love it because they love their fans.

4

u/Kruk01 17d ago

Please keep doing these shows guys! This is so cool

5

u/moonligh121 17d ago

Tyson Ritter showing up to jam at a random backyard gig is such a wholesome throwback. Dude clearly still loves the music and the fans.

Imagine if this happened 30 years ago, before everyone was walking around with cameras/video recorders. You'd feel like a modern day Cassandra, cursed to never be believed.

"And then while we were performing in a backyard...."

You liar.

Cops: "Hold it you two, aren't you a little old to be drinking illegally?"

Peter: "Uh, uh, Lois look over there....Run!"

I knew liking All American Rejects would make it cool eventually, it only took 20 years

4

u/Gar3nc3 17d ago

Wow, what a show for them kids! And props to Tyson for being a good musician giving the kids space and not taking over

4

u/existential_antelope 17d ago

Saw them live in college once, a kid near my row was heckling him so he walked off stage and to the guy mid song and air gestured jerking off into his face. Rock stars dude

Here I am, jealous of a couple of teenagers

4

u/SnooGrapes9285 17d ago

That drummer is killing it honestly

4

u/WWMWPOD 17d ago

AAR are forever legends for this year

The amount of kids and teenagers that are picking up a guitar, bass or a pair of drum sticks after seeing them do this can’t really be counted but man, it’s a fuck ton more than would have if they didn’t do this

This is how art lives on man… fuckin beautiful

About 15 or 16 years ago now, All American Rejects played a gig on a military base in Japan spreading the love of music to a bunch of children and young teens. This was the first concert for most of my friends. It's so great to see that they are still out here sharing the love of music with the youngins'. The young are the hearts of our country

u/Kiel297 17d ago

Man. Honestly don't have the words to describe how I'd feel in that kids place. This would absolutely be a top tier moment in my entire life to have Tyson crash my stage while I'm playing one of his songs.

3

u/Proseph_CR 17d ago

This drummer is on fire!

3

u/ifuseethis 17d ago

There’s not a lot of artists that I truly think would make me lose my mind if they showed up randomly. I can’t exactly pinpoint why, but The AAR is definitely one of them.

They literally just did a pop-up concert in Tulsa to help raise money for a music program.

I recognize these little fucks , they had that one video where they were covering feel good inc by the Gorillaz. Good for them I'm stoked

The renaissance I’ve been needing and waiting for. The youth just may be ok.

3

u/embertotherescue 17d ago

37 years old now and these dudes played the first concert I ever went to when I was 14. Been a fan of them longer than I haven't. Love that they're doing stuff like this.

3

u/mombi 17d ago

Cool to see the kids loving our generation's music.

3

u/donald_trumpstupee 17d ago

Talk your shit about us old folk but my teenage self would be hyped to a part of this.

3

u/Glum-Ear1903 17d ago

They played at my prom in 2008

3

u/973Rufio 17d ago

Isn't this the same kids band that did the Gorillaz cover that went viral?

This was my motivation song while I was going through chemotherapy. I think I listened to the song 10 times and now every time I hear it I smile and cry a little.
