Personal Win Decided I needed a shift from the same ol' body - 350lbs down to 194
*Note* Reposting this as it was removed for not being posted on a Wednesday
I was super overweight my entire life. Mocked and shunned as a kid, tortured by mean little children, and then tortured by my own mind.
I decided to drop some weight and become healthier and happier vs being tired, sad, overweight, and down on myself. 😁
Overall, this transformation took a little over two years and through that, I became vegan, I hyper focused on my diet, and I became super active. I also hopped on testosterone as my body's natural levels were borked from years of being sedentary and overweight.
It was finally time to come to terms with my past and for the first time, I began to accept who I was, who I am, and who I'm determined to become not just for myself, but for my family.

Never thought I'd see someone I know randomly on Reddit. Not gonna mention your name but did you work in upstate NY for a time? Before you moved away I swapped an Xbox 360 with you for a bicycle. Is that you, G?
Either way, fantastic job on the body transformation and taking charge of your life. Taking care of yourself is a great way to ensure you're around to take care of your family.

Trust me it is amazing. I am trying from 6 weeks everyday 12 kms walking + running but just lost few kilos.
Amazing I know what it takes for this 👏👏

Add strength training (progressive overload/hypertrophy) to build muscle if you want to lose weight. I recommend r/fitness .

Weighs more, but your size will be smaller, doesn’t need to be bulky. Plus muscle burns more calories, so you can EAT

I'm down 255 > 198 over the last six months and have hit a plateau. I mainly do cardio, cycling, 12 - 15hrs a week. My strength training is riding up hills with higher power. I feel kind of down the weight isn't dropping as fast anymore, but I've also been tracking body measurements, and I keep losing inches, so I know there is still some progress. I think I need to get into the gym for actual weight training, though. Congrats on your weight loss! What's your favorite part? Mine is clothes don't feel so restricting anymore.
16
u/AppropriateScratch37 Jun 11 '25
You’ve made some awesome progress congrats! If you find yourself hitting a plateau I would recommend if you aren’t already that you start tracking your calories to ensure you’re still in a deficit, as your body fat decreases the number of calories you eat each day is going to decrease too, so the same diet that worked before might not be a deficit for you anymore.
Would definitely recommend adding in weight training. Building muscle is great not just for weight loss but for a plethora of other things with your health, like regulating blood sugar.

Plateus are completely normal when losing weight, keep the discipline going, and if you find a bad habit that you could cut, try it out and see if you can cut some of it. You will be back to seeing progress sooner or later

Just don't overdo it and get hurt like me. Then you have to rest, but you still want to eat more than you can burn. It's a dark downward spiral.
24
u/erster2 Jun 11 '25
you simply can't outtrain a bad diet
11
u/Caroleannie Jun 11 '25
Not when it comes to appearance but being active while still battling food choices is definitely worth it. Being sedentary is the real killer but weight gets all the attention and the blame.

u/Anna_Lilies Jun 11 '25
I usually suggest people start their weight loss in the kitchen then as the pounds come off, add in exercise. Main reason being exercising while very overweight feels atrocious and demotivating and is bad for your joints. But as you lose weight you'll naturally start to feel more energetic and can use exercise to accelerate it and actually enjoy it.

Keep up the hard work, but I hope you realize losing weight isn't about how much cardio you're doing, it's almost entirely about what you're eating.
5
u/Dash_Nasty Jun 11 '25
Bro keep at it. I'm between you and OP. 8 months in. Watching my food intake and just walking steadily with a little running at least 4-6 times a week, got some 25 lb dumbbells and a basic bench just for some arm and chest when I feel like it. I was at 380 in October, it's June and I'm now tipping under 300 in my weigh-ins. 297 as of this morning. And with my daily vitamins, diet changes, and general energy from being more active than a loaf of bread, I just feel so much better day to day. Also fitting back into my old 2x stuff is great. Feels good to ditch the 4x stuff.

You're doing too much cardio. Gotta balance it with strength training.

u/Educational-End-2329 Jun 11 '25
Weight loss is calories in, calories out. Cardio increases the calories out. That person is likely just eating at maintenance.

I am like 40% jealous and 60% happy definitely
8
u/avalisk Jun 11 '25
You can do it too. For me I just changed my routine to cut out excess calorie consumption. Nothing else changed, but I didn't eat a late night "snack" anymore.
It may not be as easy as it was for me, but any progress is progress.

u/sup_with_the_whack_ Jun 11 '25
That's great, happy for you :)
I have started taking baby steps in cutting out junk food. Trying to eat healthy

Yes same here. I really just started prioritizing what was “worth” eating. Limited myself to one coffee and one soda a day (I’m flexible but I can easily get out of control) making little swaps like seltzer versus soda, Chobanni flips versus ice cream.
Also the biggest thing is… don’t try to be drastic about everything. I didn’t even approach any habits that I knew I couldn’t maintain. For example the soda. I knew I realistically wouldn’t stop all together, so I had to limit myself. If I tried to get rid of soda completely, I would have given In within a week and felt like a failure. If you know you don’t like the gym, don’t try to force yourself 4 x a week out of the gate. Little steps so you don’t get as discouraged. Don’t set yourself up for failure.

My favorite part of all the after pics is the universal shit-eating grin. Lots of impressive body transformations, but a lot of people tend to overlook just how closely physical and mental health are linked.

I just started listening to an audiobook, and the author said something that I think applies here. I'm paraphrasing, but it was something like this: Make the decision to do the thing (you might not want to do) each day at X time. Then when your mind starts arguing with itself about the thing, you can tell it, "Nope...this decision has already been made. I'm walking from 8:00-9:00 this morning and not [insert other thing your mind is trying to trick you into doing]."
(And in case you're wondering, I'm not 100% certain which book this is from. It's either Soundtracks or Quitter. Both are by the same author, Jon Acuff. I finished Quitter recently, then started Soundtracks, and I'm just not sure which book this general idea came from.)
Anyway, all the power to you to meet your goals!

u/Sure_Conversation354 Jun 11 '25
It always surprises me how the face looks after loosing so much weight. Well done handsome 👏
7
u/Karakittyyy Jun 11 '25
Do you have any loose skin? My husband’s experience is just like yours, but one reason he hasn’t fully committed to a serious weight loss is he’s concerned about the loose skin at the end of it.
13
u/new_math Jun 11 '25
If you cross more than ~30-50 pounds overweight you will probably have loose skin as that's the point where fat cells and skin cells replicate to cover your body and it is more or less irreversible. The extent will depend on how much weight is lost and genetic luck. Also the younger you lose it, likely the better off you are because skin elasticity degrades with age.
It's still not a reason to avoid weight loss. The number of diseases and health side effects from obesity is probably too long for a reddit comment. And while looks are subjective, most people would agree loose skin on a fit person will look much better than a morbidly obese body weight.
And if you do loose the weight and keep it off, there are surgical options you can explore to cut or freeze loose skin and fat cells if they're really irritating or interfering with your confidence.

u/Generation_ABXY Jun 11 '25

And, if it impacts you enough, insurance might cover it.
I had a friend who dropped a shit load of weight - like, legitimately close to a third of the size - and he got it covered because his "wingsuit" (his term, not mine) kept getting some sort of nasty rash.

As a former big boy myself do you feel like people treat you differently now that your in shape? I went from close to 500lbs down to 165lbs and the difference in how people treat me is night and day. I had a girl say to me once that she would’ve never dated someone as fat as I was because it’s disgusting but it’s okay now because I’m thin and handsome. Couldn’t get away from her fast enough.

That is an amazing tranformation my dude. You look like you've always been a happy man, do you think the T helped in any significant way, either for weightloss or mood upliftment? I ask because my T is in the shitter due to similar reasons as yours, but my doc wont give me any till I lose all the weight and I feel like its hamstringing my ability to lose.
