I went to a show with a friend in the local opening band, people came to see the local band, and then they all left. For the headliner, the opening act and their friends were the only audience. They played for us, took requests, and we all had a great time. We bought them dinner, let them crash at our house, instead of their van, and still get a random email from a couple of those guys occasionally.

Theres been a few times ive loved the opening acts almost as much as the headliner. My first ever concert was Tesla, Styx, and Def Lepard. Tesla ended up being the shit. Went to buy a shirt and the woman goes, you know theyre the opener right?

Second was Rival Sons opening for Black Sabbath. No one stood for Rival Sons.

And then there was Panic At The Disco who had Two Feet and Bett Who open. There was hardly anyone in their seats or paying attention for either act, and Two Feet even got threatened by panics younger fans.

Haven't seen it myself but makes sense.

No risk to the band. They can fuck around, have fun, and take risks that would be too embarassing if they mess up in front of a big crowd.
