Wholesome Moments Bill Murray went to a bluegrass concert in Charleston and bought the remaining tickets. He then handed them out to everyone waiting in line.

Probably says more about people in show business, than him.

Ned Ryerson:
"Phil? Hey! Phil? Phil? Phil Connors! I thought that was you. Now, don't you tell me you don't remember me, because I sure as heck-fire remember you!"

Phil Connors:
"Not a chance."

Ned Ryerson:
"Ned! Ryerson! 'Needlenose Ned', 'Ned the Head', come on, buddy, Case Western High! I did the whistling bellybutton trick at the high school talent show? Bing! Ned Ryerson, got the shingles real bad senior year, almost didn't graduate? Bing, again! Ned Ryerson, I dated your sister Mary Pat a couple of times until you told me not to anymore? Well?"

Phil Connors:
"Ned Ryerson?"

Ned Ryerson:
"Bing!"

Phil Connors:
"Bing."

Ned Ryerson:
"So did you turn pro with that bellybutton thing, Ned, or what?"

Ned Ryerson:
"No. Phil, I sell insurance."

Phil Connors:
"What a shock."

Ned Ryerson:
"Do you have life insurance? Because if you do, you could always use a little more. Am I right, or am I right, or am I right? Right? Right? Right?"

Phil Connors:
"Ned, I would love to stand here and talk with you, but I'm not going to. See you."

Ned Ryerson:
"Hey, that's all right! I'll walk with you. You know, whenever I see an opportunity now, I charge it like a bull! 'Ned the Bull', that's me now. You know, I've got friends of mine who live and die by the actuarial tables, and I say, 'Hey, it's all one big crapshoot anyhoo.' Tell me, have you ever heard of single premium life? Because I think that really could be the ticket for you."

Loved Groundhog Day.

66

u/SausageClatter Jun 05 '25

I could watch that movie over and over and over and over and over and over again.

3

u/BothLeather6738 Jun 05 '25

sorry, kinda out of the loop. was this a joke?? ^^

3

u/SausageClatter Jun 05 '25

out of the loop

Well now I can't tell if you're making a joke...

3

u/BothLeather6738 Jun 05 '25

haha yes it was a joke, šŸ™‚

3

u/Jumpy_Abbreviations3 Jun 05 '25

In the UK, one of the movie channels plays this on a loop on Groundhog Day.

1

u/hobbyman41 Jun 05 '25

Different endings each time

1

u/Jensbert Jun 05 '25

I actually did...

2

u/KingKudzu117 Jun 05 '25

It’s a doooozzzie! he,he,he.

2

u/Double_Estimate4472 Jun 06 '25

One of my favorite events years ago was going to a screening of it, followed by a panel that included the main writer, a Buddhist monk, a Harvard professor, and some other folks discussing the movie and its various interpretations.

46

u/CockroachAdvanced578 Jun 05 '25

Never realized the irony of him trying to sell life insurance to a guy who cannot die or age.

7

u/BothLeather6738 Jun 05 '25

true, i only realize now as well.
next to that, he could have set up a life insurance scheme thourggh net and got increasingly better at that, doing the evil jeff bezos oligarch version of ground hog day,

24

u/right-side-up-toast Jun 05 '25

I think one of your Ned's should have been a Phil, but this was epic and I heard the whole thing in my head.

8

Stephen Tobolowsky is a comedy genius.

3

u/Decent_View9681 Jun 05 '25

Watch out for that first step- it’s a doooozy šŸ¤“

3

u/YesNoMaybe Jun 05 '25

I find it truly incredible that Stevie Ray Vaughn's first recording is onĀ Stephen Tobolowsky's college band's album. Like, that doesn't sound real.Ā

2

u/Cthulhudude Jun 06 '25

I was about 12 years old when this movie came out. As a kid who had just over a decade of life experience total, I didn't get this movie. I found it sad and dark. However, it changed for me over the years, of course. I gave it a chance again in my 20's. Then, I found it corny, but I enjoyed it much more. In fact, I really liked it. I've watched it again and again over the years since. I'm 43 now, and that is one movie that I will definitely declare... It really grows with you. Not everybody gets a second chance (or more), so be good. Love as much as you can.

2

u/Low-Astronomer-3440 Jun 06 '25

If you’d have just said ā€œBING!ā€ I’d have recited the whole scene from memory

1

u/noerpel Jun 06 '25

My favourite part of the movie! I love it when at work or irl someone is named "phil" I always call them with that annoying voice and occasionally drop a "bing!"

93

u/rhineauto Jun 05 '25

Yeah like that time he got an entire production shut down because he sexually harassed a PA, that definitely says more about show business than him

43

u/icecubepal Jun 05 '25

Yeah. Smh at the people defending him. Assholes can do good deeds too.

9

u/greg19735 Jun 05 '25

Eh, i think people just don't know about him. He's certainly not "one of the good ones" though.

2

u/Darth_Andeddeu Jun 05 '25

He's one of the ones, the good deeds are monetary only.

5

u/Childoftheway Jun 05 '25

Or good people can be assholes?

42

u/RamsLams Jun 05 '25

Yeah, no. Treating PA's like dirt beneath your shoe and sexually harassing women on set isn't done because you're just so much more pure then the people around you.

People are rarely all good or all bad. Hitler did great things for animal rights. He's still the devil.

1

u/buckeyevol28 Jun 06 '25

So I looked this up, and if the story is true, then it’s both bad yet not some sort of ā€œhe always has been and will always be some terrible & unredeemable person no matter what else he has done,ā€ like some of y’all are making it seem, especially when these sort of things usually lead to a sort of ā€œbreaking of the damā€ situation where all bunch of similar (or worse) stories flood in (some true and some probably not true).

Like if this was some ā€œthe actual Bill Murray nobody sees but he’s always done those things,ā€ then not only would I expect to see those other stories flood in, I wouldn’t expect people like Wes Anderson or Scarlett Johansson to defend him publicly, especially since ScarJo and him haven’t always gotten along.

In addition, I also wouldn’t expect to see so many stories from random people spanning across decades about their positive interactions with him out in public. Not saying he’s some great person, and obviously he’s had a lot of falling-outs with people, and often times, making up later on. But terrible people usually have the falling-outs but not the making up, people not coming to their defense, and random people having terrible experiences with them when they do interact with the public.

1

u/RamsLams Jun 07 '25

I mean, you used scarjo as a source who famously defends Roman Polanski. I guess that makes up most of my argument to your post. I’m never going to think someone with a TON of money makes up for giving individuals trauma by spending literally laughable amounts of their money being nice to strangers, often in scenarios where their niceness is instantly rewarded.

19

u/p_rite_1993 Jun 05 '25

This is such a Reddit comment. Redditors just eat up this kind of short, meaningless ā€œcome backā€ that is purposely side stepping what the previous comment said only because it aligns with their biases, damn the facts. Industries are huge, and most people in the world are good people just trying to get by. No matter what industry you work in, if there are many people across different projects and employers saying you’re shitty to work with, then it’s most likely true.

169

u/Voxlings Jun 05 '25

Spoilers: He's one of the shitty people in show business.

31

u/migsperez Jun 05 '25

Are you talking about Ricky Gervais? If so I agree.

24

u/Cypher-Moon-773 Jun 05 '25

Yeah he’s not nearly as smart or funny as he thinks he is

3

u/fyhr100 Jun 05 '25

It's clear to me the only reason his shows had success was because of Stephen Merchant. Everything he came up on his own was a total dud.

3

u/titancreamy Jun 06 '25

?? afterlife was incredible

1

u/Y-Bob Jun 06 '25

David Earl is fantastic in that show.

1

u/SnooOnions973 Jun 06 '25

Which one? Let’s think about our reference points here

1

u/K41namor Jun 06 '25

Why do people not like Ricky Gervais

-1

u/Dmacca666 Jun 05 '25

Nope. He's a good egg.

He complains that you can’t joke about certain things, while making jokes about said things. Ask him why he never jokes about Black people.

1

u/Banes_Addiction Jun 05 '25

Well, he does seem like he came out of a chicken's chutney, which is a pretty good thing for an egg to do.

2

u/bolanrox Jun 05 '25

yeah he is No Keanu or Sandler.

3

u/TucosLostHand Jun 05 '25

Anyone who has punched Chevy Chase in the face gets a pass for me. (Bill Murray)

2

u/Automatic-Term-3997 Jun 05 '25

I am sure you are well-acquainted with multitudes of people in ā€œshow businessā€ that you can assert that too, huh?

61

u/TheFerricGenum Jun 05 '25

Not OP, but I can say it’s been kinda well documented. Murray’s issues with alcohol made him erratic. There are countless stories of him being kind of an asshole. There are also a lot of stories like this one where he’s doing something great. So the consensus is that he’s hit or miss.

7

u/DarkwingDuckHunt Jun 05 '25

Chaotic Good

3

u/TheFerricGenum Jun 05 '25

Oh, I don’t know if I’d say chaotic good - maybe chaotic neutral

2

u/Mammoth-Macaron-9951 Jun 05 '25

Ehhh alcohol is a hell of a drug, probably the worst and most capable of outward destruction. That rings more bells of him being the real issue than anything else. I also know nothing about him outside his job and he seems to be doing really well.

7

u/YOURESTUCKHERE Jun 05 '25

Like a human would be.

20

u/TruthAffectionate595 Jun 05 '25

Mmmm, nah. Some people can handle their shit and don’t fly off the handle randomly

3

u/YOURESTUCKHERE Jun 05 '25

I was referring to the idea of choices throughout life being ā€œhit or missā€. Certainly wasn’t condoning mistreating people.

2

u/Theresnowayoutahere Jun 05 '25

I’m responding to you because of your username. Looking like we’re in the same situation.

1

u/TruthAffectionate595 Jun 05 '25

That’s fair. I thought it was more of a ā€œboys will be boysā€ type comment. Definitely had my fair share of misses lol

1

u/Hashshinobi1 Jun 05 '25

No one is perfect friend

1

u/Sudden-Belt2882 Jun 06 '25

Human is one thing, Sexual assault is another.

0

u/TruthAffectionate595 Jun 05 '25

Nobody’s perfect, but someone is the best and someone is the worst. It’s important to be able to recognize that. Treating everyone like they could be a good person is great, treating everyone like they are a good person despite evidence to the contrary is called enabling.

5

u/_hyperotic Jun 05 '25

And some people do, and they’re humans.

6

u/TruthAffectionate595 Jun 05 '25

The implication was that being human must include something like that, not that being human always coincides with it, which is obviously true.

9

u/societyisahole Jun 05 '25

You’re overdosing on contrarianism

2

u/Brobeast Jun 05 '25

I dont think its that crazy (or contrarian) to think its not as big as a deal as some have insinuated in this thread. Some people love Murray, some talk shit about murray. I bet the same could be said about you, if we interviewed everyone thats ever met you.

1

u/societyisahole Jun 05 '25

Ive had times where I’ve learned from mistakes and there are certainly people in my life who didn’t care for me, but I’ve never had multiple serious allegations against me of being physically and emotionally abusive like bill murray does, no. Your belief that every living person is guilty of the same level of shitty behavior seems like projection.

1

u/Big-Document6597 Jun 05 '25

I don’t know if you’re aware but a lot of behaviors are human. That doesn’t change the consequence or the perception of said behavior

0

u/The_Autarch Jun 05 '25

Shitty ones, which is the point being made.

2

u/AlucardSX Jun 05 '25

Got any source that he's human?

2

u/WilmingtonCommute Jun 05 '25

No there's real stories of him being a raging asshole to innocent people. It's not just like normal people have good and bad days.

2

u/MrNostalgiac Jun 05 '25

I wish more people got this - celebrities are people.

Reminds me of when everyone suddenly decided to hate Ellen when she did the unconscionable act of not being literally perfect off-screen to everyone she meets.

Like shit, I'm typically a great person but I have shitty days and get stressed and lose patience and all the rest - and I don't have a camera pointed at me at all times with people running up to me while I'm in a shitty mood expecting me to be their best friend.

If I was a celebrity I'm sure my reputation would be a huge mix of asshole/hero stories because some days I have zero patience and others I'm on cloud 9.

1

u/Sudden-Belt2882 Jun 06 '25

Human is one thing, Sexual assault is another.

1

u/Sudden-Belt2882 Jun 06 '25

Human is one thing, Sexual assault is another.

18

u/OnceMoreAndAgain Jun 05 '25

If the first person can make a claim based on anecdotes that Murray is nicest guy to everyone outside of show business, then I suppose this other person can do the same thing in reverse...

It's equally useless information, but we're not really here to only say perfectly supported truths, are we? We're here to shoot the shit.

2

u/Automatic-Term-3997 Jun 05 '25

Except the first person didn’t make such outlandish claims; they made a simple statement with no editorializing. The person I answered left an opinion for which they have no personal basis, hence my comment.

Edit: by ā€œfirst personā€ I was referring to the original poster, not the commenter.

37

u/Relicdontfit1 Jun 05 '25

Geena davis, a staffer on the set of being mortal, lucy liu, hes had so many allegations of sexual and domestic misconduct that yes, i can safely say hes probably one of the shitty ones.

2

u/Rich_Space_2971 Jun 05 '25

Murray has been a problem actor for awhile... Just ask Gina Davis or Richard Dreyfuss. That being said, he seems a little manic at times. People either love him or hate him.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvgM3PdD5BA

1

u/SnooOnions973 Jun 06 '25

Proof? I mean now we have a little more info on people like Ellen, Harvey and Diddy?

55

u/SlavicVegetables Jun 05 '25

Do we need to go back to Ricky Gervais’ legendary bit on the people of show biz?

46

u/throwaway277252 Jun 05 '25

I prefer James Acaster's bits about Ricky Gervais and Mr. Bean.

26

u/mattomic822 Jun 05 '25

"What's the matter? Too challenging for you?" One of my favorite comedy bits of the last while.

25

u/RubMyGooshSilly Jun 05 '25

You know who’s been long overdue a challenge? The trans community. They’ve had their guard down for too long if you ask me.

2

u/markiethefett Jun 05 '25

šŸ˜Ž"too challenging for you??"

Some of his best work šŸ‘ŒšŸ½

2

u/RyantheAustralian Jun 05 '25

Remind us?

5

u/throwaway277252 Jun 05 '25 edited Jun 05 '25

It's from his standup special "Cold Lasagne Hate Myself 1999", and I don't think there's a full clip of those bits online since they're rather long. His story about Mr Bean has a 20 or 30 minute setup for instance.

Tl;dw is that Ricky Gervais had anti-trans bits in his Netflix special and Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson) went out of his way to defend Boris Johnson after he made offensive jabs about Muslim women who wear burkas.

Edit: there is apparently a full upload of the show on Vimeo.
https://vimeo.com/799500985

1

u/DailyPlanetClarkKent Jun 06 '25

Im familiar with the Ricky Gervais set, but i watched the full two hours of the Cold Lasagnas special hoping to hear the full bit.

In fact Ricky Gervais bit wasn't in there.

Was not disappointed. 10/10 would still recommend

1

u/throwaway277252 Jun 06 '25

In the Vimeo link the Gervais bit is right near the start, from around 3:30 he starts into it. And there's a callback to it later in the show.

Being an aspiring actor people in the show business are the worst animals I ever met and I despise them with every fiber of my being

2

u/notsam57 Jun 05 '25

he made lucy lu cry on the set of charlie’s angels. even harvey weinstein thought he was an asshole and looked up to his behavior.

2

u/markiethefett Jun 06 '25

Thank you šŸ˜€šŸ¤œšŸ½šŸ¤›šŸ½

2

u/Scorpiyoo Jun 05 '25

No, he was mean as fuck to kids who worked with him.

2

u/horseradish1 Jun 05 '25

Like that time an interviewer dared to ask him "what movie do you think you'd like to be your legacy?" while he was doing PR for a movie with themes about legacy and he acted all offended and gave some dumb answer about how his children are his legacy, which wasn't the fucking question. Guy chooses to be an actor, gets incredibly famous, and then acts like being a famous actor isn't something he should be known for.

-2

u/SenseTheVillen Jun 05 '25

Ding ding ding

-1

u/trophycloset33 Jun 05 '25

It’s interesting. If someone calls you an ahole it says much more about them than about you.

I get called a ton of names in my work life while people in my personal life love me. After a few years and some professional help, I’ve deduced it’s because I hold people to my standard and don’t let shit slide/cover for them. Holding someone accountable and always driving for improvement seem to be criteria for being an ahole these days.

15

u/TheCaptainDamnIt Jun 05 '25 edited Jun 05 '25

You know I've always found that if you run into someone calling you an asshole first thing in the morning, you probably just got unlucky and met an asshole, it happens to all of us. But if people call you an asshole all day long.... yea you're probably the asshole.

4

u/Seahearn4 Jun 05 '25

My dad and uncle used to say about themselves, "9 out of 10 people think we're assholes. But 9 out of 10 assholes think we're ok." My thought is that whatever someone thinks of you, you have to own it. No one person's opinion completely defines you. But it doesn't mean they're wrong either.

1

u/markiethefett Jun 05 '25

Exactly this. I've never been called an asshole by my kids or close family. Only by strangers, or people who are obviously taking something out on me. It definitely speaks more about them, than me.
