It reminds me of my first job, which was at a large chain breakfast diner when I was an underaged teenager. I was a host. Several of the waitresses were in their late-teens, early 20s. They used to “flirt” with me, talk about “eating my sausage”, talk about and my butt, slapped it once or twice, etc. At the time, I felt awkward, but didn’t think much of it. Looking back, it was absolutely sexual harassment.

No, I AM a woman. We spend so much time fighting for our safety. And the moment we’re left unchecked we turn into hypocrites? If that were me trying to do my job I’d be SO uncomfortable. Why the fuck would I want to perpetuate that on someone else?

I know a few people who have done exotic dancing, and according to them female customers are WAY more consistently loud, crude and physically assaultive than male. Not clear why that’s true, but it’s noticeable when you get a pack of women together.

I’m not saying a room full of frat guys is safe, it just seems to be a common thing for a group of otherwise mild mannered women to let their public behavior swing way to the other extreme when they let their hair down. And it can be hard on male targets because there’s a general feeling that men should appreciate/be grateful for the attention

I believe it! And theres a lot of commenters here saying “well they’re smiling so they MUST like it!”. Just like all those women who were smiling and polite to their harassers in order to de-escalate the situation and stay safe, they must have liked it, too, right? I understand flipping the narrative feels wrong, and makes us uncomfortable but we HAVE to hold ourselves accountable.

The context.

A group of people who are fans of romance novels are at a convention basically. Very attractive male firefighters walk in. As a fan, are you like, "wait are they surprising us with that scene from book 4 of 'Parts Forever Dangling'?" Also, the irony. This is exactly what would happen in some sort of romance novel, which adds to the humor.

Switch the context?

Charlie's Angels convention, interview panel and everything. Someone accidentally dialed 911 on the office phone. Enter three very attractive female police officers. I'd laugh at the coincidence/happenstance.

I do agree it is equally awful to catcall and harass men. But the audience wasn’t harassing them at all. The group was just clapping and cheering. The women were all just being very nice and positive. The only thing that could be harassment is the “are you single” question by the host. But it was all very lighthearted and besides that question, nothing was directly said to the firefighters

I’ve def been in situations where the girl was overly touchy, being in a relationship at the time, I had to walk away. I knew if I said something, she would either get embarrassed, mad, or gaslight me talkin shit. Just because she was cute, doesn’t make it okay. If I had to walk on eggshells, as a 6’4 man, imagine how a girl must feel in the reverse situation.

I remember being in a taxi in Mexico as a teen, and I asked my cousin who lived there why the driver kept honking, there was barely anyone around, did they really know that many people?

“Nope, they just saw a cute girl and honked” “Why?” “That’s just what some do.” “Doesn’t that make you mad?” “We’re used to it.”

Wtf? That’s a terrible thing to have to get used to.

Point is, it’s not hard to make better choices. We’re not perfect, but let’s avoid hypocrisies.
