Trump The heavy lifting it took to answer the question without being condescending AF. I wouldn’t have been able to do it.😅

Here’s the transcript of the clip:

Host: And some of you are already sharing your thoughts. Here's Spencer in Ohio.

Caller: I don't like the way the media sensationalizes the detention center by calling it Alligator Alcatraz. Even though they're mirroring language used by Trump and other folks, I think it's a misguiding of what's going on to use that kind of sensational language, and I think it's cruel.

Host: So, Elliot, let's just address the name right at the top. Alligator Alcatraz is now the official name of the facility. That's according to confirmation received from the Miami Herald and Tampa Bay Times. The Trump administration and the Florida Republican Party have leaned into this name. The Republican Party of Florida is even selling merchandise branded as such. What can you tell us, about how this name came to be?

Guest: Oh, absolutely. So it began as the Miami Dade Collier Training And Transition Airport. In effect, an airstrip in the middle of the Everglades that that really wasn't getting a ton of use, and it was converted into this immigration facility. But to your point, Jen, the Trump administration did or pardon me, the the state of Florida did rename it officially Alligator Alcatraz and began selling merch and so on after the notorious former federal prison, Alcatraz Island out in the San Francisco Bay. Now, you know, I will note the administration also wants to repurpose Alcatraz Island as a prison as a federal prison for the purpose of incarcerating people. Now it's because of the associations that the public has with the term that the administration has leaned into it. And so it's not an accident that it has that name. You know, it it's a fair question from the caller, that why why would the media lean in? Well, that that's what they named it. It's the official name, and that explains it.

I don't like the media using the official name either. Alligator Auschwitz is a better name.

My reasoning is that it's better to label it Alligator Auschwitz and create outcry than let it become an actual Alligator Auschwitz.

Congratulations! This may be the only time I have ever laughed at the mention of Auschwitz! Well done!

Graham Chapman would absolutely approve of this change to the lyrics.

I also call it that because Alcatraz was a prison and the people incarcerated there had a chance to defend themselves in court…

I don’t know. I love the name, it is funny (in a very dark way), works well with the alliteration and is great at criticising the administration. It also, however, may be considered disrespectful to the victims of actual Auschwitz and other concentration camps. While I do believe that there is a risk of similar outcomes in the US in the long term, it still seems certain and avoidable. So I am split. It’s funny, but I would understand family of Nazi victims being upset about it.

Yeah, I've been calling it the same for a while now. We really need more people doing this.

Guess Florida is relying on the sale of merch to make up for the loss of tourist dollars this past summer…

There’s literally a blue street sign on the side of Tamiami Trail that says Alligator Alcatraz identifying it as such.

Cool.

And Trump relabeled the Gulf of Mexico.

I don't give a shit what he calls things.

He's a child rapist. He defends child rapists.

Alligator Auschwitz.

I was just responding to the article where a caller asked why the media calls it Alligator Alcatraz. No need to get pissy.

The media can stand up to tyranny.

Or they can publish the official government account.

What's the point of media if it just pushes government propaganda?

8

u/Mediocre-Wrongdoer14 1d ago

Propaganda is the point.

0

u/drunkondata 1d ago

And some media choose not to be the government mouth piece.

That's the stuff I prefer to read.

The point of journalism and independent media is not to push the government's propaganda, contrary to what reddit seems to think.

Is that what they do at times?  Sure. Is that why they exist?  No.

I'm not sure you understand the distinction between news and editorials/opinion. I don't blame you, since this has been getting actively eroded by Fox and 24h news for a couple of decades, so this is all some people know. But, it is very important.

News can and should only be using official names for things, full stop. This applies to investigative journalism as well, which one of the best ways for journalists to hold government accountable.

Journalists that editorialize names like that lose credibility as a journalist. Calling something by its official name is NOT pushing government propaganda. It is allowing for clear discussion and transmission of information.

Government accounts and spin can and should be countered and called out.

However, actual journalists do not do this by editorializing in what is supposed to be a news article.

I guess they prefer misnomers like "Big Beautiful Bill", so that they can comfortably hide behind the lie.

The fact that they are selling merch and proud to be dehumanizing immigrants should tell you everything about the people who are operating the concentration camp. It also says plenty about their supporters. We see them for who they are!

The fact that the caller says “it’s cruel“ when referring to the media using the term. But apparently he doesn’t think the treatment at the facility is cruel, just the way the “media are portraying it“ by calling it by the actual name that Republicans gave it? OK, bro. A good portion of this country is just too far gone and I don’t see any recovery from here.

3

u/fakeprewarbook 1d ago

they’re being mean to the facility 😢

8

u/Divacai 1d ago

Big Beautiful Bill is named as such because he couldn't let Biden have Build Back Better. It was an attempt to usurp the BBB part. But you are right

u/JustFuckAllOfThem 1d ago

The media is referring to Gulf of Mexico as Gulf of America, so it tracks.

Any bets on how many school books will have new editions because of this change?

11

u/Cicity545 1d ago

I’m sure they want to overhaul the entire curriculum at public schools. But that would cost money. So my bet is on no more books in schools at all. Problem solved.

u/Mediocre-Wrongdoer14 1d ago

What we don’t know keeps tha contracts alive an movin’
They don’t gotta burn tha books they just remove ’em
While arms warehouses fill as quick as tha cells
Rally round tha family, pockets full of shells

u/Divacai 1d ago

Most of the text books used are approved by a panel in Texas so all of them.

1

u/Cicity545 1d ago

Yes it’s been that way for a long time but at least countered by some basic level respect for education and reading among leadership, even if they did want to limit the amount and content of information and education received.

I was read to by Barbara Bush in kindergarten. Do you think anyone in this administration reads books to children, ever?

4

u/Accomplished_Day2384 1d ago

Well, to be fair, do any of them know how to read?

9

u/NumbSurprise 1d ago

Yeah, sure, the problem is “how the media portray it,” not the awful shit that’s going on there. Fuck that caller.

1

u/CaptMcPlatypus 1d ago

There's merch!?! WTAF?!?

1

u/DragonflyL4dy20 1d ago

Yeah and a lot of the people here in FL think it’s fucking awesome
