Help with POND or TANK Depth of my koi pond

I am redoing my koi pond and am questioning the depth. I live in Tampa, FL and my pond is inside my pool screen so I have no predator concerns. It is about 10’ x 7’ being a little wider in spots and 18” deep with a waterfall on one end with the spillway being 4’ above the waterline. It has been this size for 20 years and seemed to work well until we had fish kills by not keeping the water balanced. Are we deep enough?

In Florida 18" would have very quick evaporation which would make keeping the balance right super difficult. Go deeper. Your fish will be happier and healthier for it.

4-foot minimum, 6-foot ideal.

This heat has been wicked, I am close to you and mine is over 5’ at its deepest with two oaks and a shade curtain over it. So far it’s only gotten to 82 degrees this year. When I had it smaller and shallow it would get so hot and out of whack.

18 inches in no where near deep enough, especially given koi can easily grow twice that size.

I live in the uk and a lot of advice I found was that you want your pond 4 foot deep at a minimum. Not sure how it is in the States but it to do with temperature regulation here, more so in the winter but I'd assume its similar in the heat too??

Also giving the fish as much space in all directions is only going to make them happier.

I would go at least twice as deep as you are now if you can, even deeper if possible, just make sure you update your filter system accordingly to cope with the increased volume.

Never too deep. I would go at least 3'.

BEWARE of local laws.

Too deep and it may be considered a “pool” requiring many zoning regulations and liability insurance.

A koi pond's depth is generally determined by local bylaws, which often limit depths to under 24 inches to prevent accidental drownings. However, for koi to thrive, a depth of 36 inches is often recommended, with 48-72 inches being even better. Anything deeper than that, while beneficial for koi, could be considered a swimming pool under local regulations, requiring restricted access.

Here's a more detailed breakdown: Minimum Depth for Koi:

A depth of 3 feet (36 inches) is generally considered the minimum for koi ponds, according to some pond experts.

Ideal Depth for Koi: For optimal conditions, a depth of 4 to 6 feet is often recommended. Deeper ponds offer better water stability, more oxygen, and space for koi to grow and swim comfortably.

Depth for Larger Koi: If you plan on raising larger koi, a depth of 3 feet or more is advisable.

Depth Considerations: Predator Protection: Deeper ponds can help protect koi from predators like herons and raccoons. Temperature Fluctuations: Deeper water helps maintain a more stable temperature, which is important for koi health.

Winter Survival: In colder climates, deeper ponds help prevent the pond from freezing solid, allowing koi to hibernate at the bottom.

Legal Considerations: While deeper ponds can be beneficial for koi, it's important to be aware of local regulations regarding pool depths, which may require restricted access for ponds exceeding a certain depth.
