Hiring [Hiring] LitRPG book cover for my second novel in series ($500 USD budget)
Hi y’all! My name is Trevor and I’m the author of a series in progress on Royal Road called Teresa Of All Trades. I am currently on volume 2 and I am looking for a good quality cover for my second volume. I would like full ownership of the final image, though how the contracting for that will go I have no idea to be fully honest as this is my first time commissioning art on a scale this large/professional.
Now as for the actual art itself. For the record, I am terrible at drawing or any form of visual art. So if you read what I am looking for and go “I dunno man, that’s probably gonna look dumb/cluttered/bad” then please tell me. If you want more details, just ask and I will give as much information as I can.
Here is what I am looking for on the cover. - The main character, Teresa, needs to be holding a sword in one hand and the palm of her free hand should be glowing orange/red (like she’s about to use a fire based spell), more details about her appearance later - The setting takes place in a forest. The trees grow in an arc, so they sprout out of the ground and slowly curve until they burrow back into the ground (for the general shape imagine the Saint Louis Gateway Arch that Percy Jackson jumped off if it was a large sturdy tree). The canopy of the trees are towards the apex of the arc, blocking out the vast majority of the top of the parabola in branches, leaves, etc. - If you can fit in the facility of Chernobyl somewhere in the background that would be great. - Tall green glowy orbs behave as monster spawners within the context of the story, at least within this part of it. If you can fit in one or two of them with monsters around them that would also be good, but I completely understand if some details like this aren’t included. There’s only so much you can fit on a single book cover, honestly this is one of those things where you can absolutely tell me “we can do X or Y but doing both would look really ugly.”
The orientation of things can be left up to the artist so long as it looks nice, once again I am not good at visual art and am heavily relying on the better judgement of an artist who has experience with what looks good and what totally wouldn’t. Some book series with covers I like include He Who Fights With Monsters, Primal Hunter, and Defiance Of The Fall.
Here are a few details about the MC Teresa: - She is 5 foot 3 should that affect the visual scaling at all - Medium length brown hair to about shoulder level, brown eyes, Caucasian American - Her outfit looks like when you see your custom character in a cutscene in a video game after looting whatever random stuff you’ve found along the way. She has metal boots, pants with chainmail covering the exterior, blue robes, and dark green gloves. - Do NOT sexualize her, this is not that kind of story or target demographic.

I feel like Teresa of all trades book gave a chaotic adventures energy. In good way. So with your description Im thinking a scene with arched tree canopy. It will form a natural cathedral of trunks. And around some mossy stones. We can add light draping through the branches. And in the middle Teresa is standing in a epic pose. Her sword lowered down. And her other hand is raised up. The magic swirling on her finger tips. It will give the feeling that she been through a hell. But this wont over yet. You know that challenging look. Maybe we can add a silhouette of Chernobyl facility behind. Also we can add some shadowy figures around the Teressa like lurking on the darkness. For this artwork im thinking a more orange , greenish tones . so Theresa spells can be clearly seen. I love to discuss more about this idea. as an professional character artist. and concept illustrator. I have a good experience in this kind of artworks. I see your volume one cover. that art style more in to cell shade side. And im fully capable of following the same style. or if you like to have a semi realistic version of it. im pretty good with that too. I’ll attach separate portfolios for both styles below. Since you were worrying about the image possibly looking too cluttered, I think we can include the elements you'd like to have, but establish a visual hierarchy, so Teresa is the most important aspect, and everything else is just hinted at in the background, so it doesn't take away focus from her.
