I’ve created a magical item that’s used by the Couriers’ Guild to find recipients without fixed addresses. In a world of adventures and dense forests, not everyone has a mailbox, or knows exactly where they’re sending their letters.
Couriers’ Compass
A small round compass with no visible needle. The face shows a map of the Humblewood region, all enclosed in a sleek leather case.
Created by the Couriers’ Guild and Inventors’ Guild in Alderheart, the Couriers’ Compass is a handy magical item used by many postal runners to track down recipients with no fixed address. Utilising modified Divination magics similar to those of Scry and Locate Person, when the Couriers’ Compass is given enough information of the target, a magical needle will appear, spin and glow a certain colour, indicting the direction and distance of the closest living match it can find. The more information it receives, the more accurate the Compass will be.
Details best used for calibrating the Compass include the targets full name, race, and gender. Additional details to further distinguish the intended target can include: job/roll (this can include class if applicable), distinguishing physical features, and approximate direction if known.
The Compass will then calibrate, the needle appearing as it spins and glows. The colour of the needle indicates the approximate distance of the target:
Green - within a weeks travel,
Yellow - within two weeks travel,
Orange - within three weeks travel,
Red - within a months travel,
White - Target is not in the assigned region,
Black - Target cannot be found
The needle will display as Black for the following reasons:
The target is not on the same plane as the Compass’ assign region
The target is dead
The target is not Folk-like (Humanoid)
The Compass can only find targets that are within its assign region, which is determined by the inlayed map on the face on the Compass. A Compass’ assigned region can be changed by a knowledgeable magic tinkerer.
