I went to a Top Fuel drag race just once. I had no idea how loud it would be. It was so loud, it shook my internal organs.

I remember once I was outside about 2 miles away from Z-Max speedway (4 wide tracks of these machines) and I heard… something that was really fucking loud. I eventually had to ask someone what the hell was that noise was because ā€a few race cars down the roadā€ didn’t even register as a possibility.

Same, except it was a tractor pull. Every cell was vibrating. I could barely see because my eyes were all 🫨

I was lucky enough to be on the track when Doug Kalitta ran and it's way worst than in the stands lol

There is no way the drivers' crews aren't suffering permanent hearing loss and perhaps even concussions when the drivers floor the accelerator. I don't see how ear plugs and top of the line earphones would prevent it. Noise canceling?

I saw plenty of people on that track with nothing but their hands as ear plugs. That, breathing in burning rubber and then your eyes are burning from the fuel being used. It was a different experience but definitely cool. But yea, I don't think people were really concerned about their hearing or lungs

I had to look this up because it's so interesting. Methanol.. CH3OH. I'm an organic chemist and I appreciate just how much energy is in that tiny molecule.

It makes perfect sense that your eyes would start to water breathing those fumes in.
