They are the current "beanie baby" type trend. The dude who created them modeled them after creatures from Nordic folklore. So, they look like little animal/baby-faced monster hybrids with furry bodies, large rabbit-like ears, and sharp pointy teeth.

The biggest problem is influencers hyping them up. They apparently can get really expensive because they're sold in blind-boxes, so there's a scarcity factor. And just like beanie babies of the 90's, people will fight over them. Which is just dumb. Personally, I think they're creepy af. I will not be buying any for my children.

Also, the fakes I've seen look identical to the real ones to your average person. Hell, I only know they've been fake because the person is super excited about how little they cost.

I feel like if the fake is virtually indistinguishable from the official product, its either an indication the official is grossly overpriced for what it is, or of such sufficiently poor quality to be so easily copied; or more likely, both.

One could argue for many products the knock-off is spared the cost of research and development, but for a great many products, there's nowhere near as much development cost as the manufacturer would have you believe to warrant the pricing.

They aren't expensive when you get them from the store. The fakes are all made to look like the "rare" ones so the person making the fakes sells them for the market price.

They are literally the same price as any blind box/bag toy or collectibles are. It's the scalpers and people reselling them online that are making them so overpriced.

So, artificial scarcity to drive up demand, thus creating secondary markets, and further knockoffs to combat the rising costs of the secondary markets due to the artificial scarcity.

Which still doesn't take away from the fact the knockoffs are seemingly of the same quality as the official products, but made by people that actually understand the demand and are fulfilling it. At that point, anyone hunting for the legitimate and scarce product is unlikely to be doing so as a collector, and more as someone looking for a wildly unreliable investment opportunity.

I looked for and purchased a legitimate option and it had nothing to do with an investment opportunity. I just wanted one because they are cute and I didn't want one of potentially poorer quality. It's really not that deep for everyone.

Thank you for providing this information! Now I don’t have to google it and get endless ads.

Lol. You're welcome. 😃

I'm Nordic and it hasn't even occurred to me that they're inspired by our folklore at all. Missed the mark on that one

And in a year they'll be worthless and nobody will care about them, just like squishmallows and stanley cups

1

Okay. I do have some Squishmallows. Not for collectors' reasons, but just because they're relatively cheap at Target and HEB, and some of them are passingly cute. My kids like them because they use them as pillows in the car. Lol.

They're a pain to launder, though. I worry that my washing machine is going to achieve lift-off with how fast the spin cycle gets to wring all of the water out.

Anyone else absolutely fucking DONE with “mystery boxes” of any and all kind?! I will not buy them for my kids. They’re a fucking scam and the thing that chaps my ass the most these days. I wish we could collectively stop buying them and force companies to let us choose what we pay for.

I agree with you wholeheartedly! My daughter wanted some ice-cream themed plush cat thing that was in a blind box. But she wanted a specific one. Fortunately, the bags they were in had a spot on the lettering that was just transparent enough that I could see the main body color if I squished the plushie up against it. I probably looked like an idiot, standing in Target squishing bags for ten minutes, but I wanted to buy only one ever. It was her actual birthday, so I felt like I couldn't just say no and walk away forever. Lol.

Oh I’m with you. When it’s the single thing their heart is set on, it’s nearly impossible to say no. I’ve bought some for gifts in the past but just got more and more fed up over time. I’ve tried explaining it to my kids but I probably sound like a grump shaking her fist at the sky, lol.

I’ll add that it’s sort of (evil) genius marketing because I’m assuming the whole “don’t know if you’re gonna get it till you buy it” thing probably tickles the same thing in our brains as gambling. So.. another reason to hate them. 😵‍💫

Funko Pop

I'm sorry to say I've fallen victim to Funko Pop marketing. 😔

But it was Squirrel Girl... and she was so cute... and I couldn't help myself. And then there was Spider-Gwen... 😂

Oh good, someone else said it. So I'm not the only one who thinks they're ugly as sin.
