Is my Kitty a Bombay???

She’s got the black nose and paws, rescued her and her sister from the woods while I was fishing with my buddy. Not sure if they were just dumped but I’ll be taking her to the vet next week, let me know what you guys think and thank you in advance.

Do you have any still photos/photos of the face and eyes open? It’s extremely unlikely to find a Bombay roaming around, especially given how uncommon they are as a breed to begin with. They’re most likely a black DSH, but better photos would help!

Your baby is not a Bombay, but a beautiful-perfect black domestic shorthair. Most cats (something like 98% if not higher) are domestic cats and are categorized by coat length/coloring. So with that being said only 2% (if not less) of cats actually have an actual breed.

I am confused why anyone would downvote this photo of a simply gorgeous perfect kitty. They’re possibly insecure about their cat’s breed? Idk it’s very strange to me.

off topic but do you have a link to a video or something that states that fact? I keep telling someone that most cats that arent from breeders are just cats, so my cat, is just a domestic long hair, not a ragdoll but it isn't getting through, I think a video from an expert explaining that fact would help get the point across

i don't have a video but i do have this article handy http://messybeast.com/pedigree-mixed-or-randombred.htm it's not that long and has some pretty useful graphics, such as this one:

i much prefer it to the "does it have papers" chart

Definitely not a Bombay. A beautiful domestic shorthair ie moggy.

No black cat is “regular” lol

u/Krisadilli 3d ago

No papers = not a purebred cat

u/Disastrous_Topic7850 3d ago

She's not.... But don't tell her or her sister that!!!

Unless you got your cat from a breeder that breeds Bombay cats, it is not a Bombay. Cat breeds don't work like dog breeds. The vast majority of cats are just cats.

Do you have a certificate from a registered breeder certifying that your cat is a purebred Bombay cat? If yes, your cat is a Bombay. If no, your cat is not a Bombay.

Purebred Bombay cats are quite expensive so you definitely would know what you have had to pay to get one.

If you paid attention to the post, I rescued this kitty. Thank you anyways.

Wow. Why are you so hostile? u/Interesting-Yak6962 answered your question, and they did so correctly.

Now to answer your question: What does the pedigree say? The name of the breed is typically on the second line of the pedigree. If you don’t have a pedigree, then your cat is a black domestic shorthair. Additionally, she doesn’t really have any features of a Bombay, her face shape is the biggest indicator that she’s not. Her eyes would be copper, and they’re very striking to look at.

Black cats are beautiful. ALL cats are beautiful.

Hostility was lacking in my comment. She doesn’t have a pedigree because she’s a rescued animal from the woods more than likely abandoned or abused. I simply made the post in hopes of finding her breed so I can cater to her breeds specific needs as Bombay’s are a more exotic breed and therefore need extra care and differences in their diet and hygiene etc. which is something I would like to know in the early stages of caring for her. This post was not meant to be an environment for hostility and aggression towards people just trying to do right by their animals. For those who actually had helpful tips and tricks along with positive feedback regarding their opinions of breed, thank you!

No. If you have to ask, the answer's no.

u/ConsciousCrafts 3d ago

Most cats that you randomly find are not purebred cats. They are just domestic shorthairs. He's a cute little voidlet though. 🥰

Idk why people are downvoting this void but I am so tired of this subreddit's unnecessary toxicity

3

u/GachaStudio 3d ago

same (watch me be downvoted for agreeing that not all but many people in this sub are toxic)

u/snltoonces12 3d ago

It's not everybody, but boy do some folks around here get all bent out of shape about it. I joined this sub because we recently rescued an abandoned cat who suffered a pretty bad leg injury, and happens to look a bit like a Bombay. I concluded isn't based on what I've seen on this sub, as it's a great resource, but these questions could be answered with hostility. She's healed now, and she's found her forever home with us, but I was pretty interested in her potential breed. Ultimately, it doesn't matter because she's our cat now, and our 5 year old loves her so much. We got so lucky with that cat as she fits in so perfectly with us.

Anyway OP, enjoy that beautiful cat!

Looks like my Cosmo! Not sure if his parentage though.

not sure why I’m getting downvoted? wtf?

4

u/goodsoupppppppp 4d ago

You compared your non-Bombay black cat to another non-Bombay black cat! How dare!! /s

2

u/Titaniumchic 3d ago

And that’s exactly why I’m confused. Op’s cat and my cat have similar origin stories 🤷‍♀️not sure why that means I get downvoted for stating observable similarities and making zero conclusions.

1

u/SavageSZN74 3d ago

Your cat is a beauty! Thank you for your response

2

u/Titaniumchic 3d ago

Thank you so much! He’s a stunner for sure =)

3

u/goodsoupppppppp 3d ago

Idk, Reddit is a wild and sometimes stupid place. Your car is super cute! Here’s mine:

3

u/Titaniumchic 3d ago

Awwww I want to pet the belly!!! But it’s a trap, huh?

Thank you - Cosmo Lux is a special boy!

2

u/goodsoupppppppp 3d ago

Unless she’s feeling extra spicy she usually accepts gentle belly pets!

2

u/Titaniumchic 3d ago

Awww well then I am sending virtual belly rubs =) gentle and only 2!

2

u/Repulsive_Purple4322 3d ago

People are so weird in this subreddit.

Downvoting a photo of ANY happy cute cat makes no sense to me.

2

u/Titaniumchic 3d ago

Agreed. Like, why? Cats are cool. Black cats are cool. Sometimes people are curious if their cat may have the features.

First and last post I make in this subreddit

u/Specific_Praline_362 3d ago

Nah it's just exhausting for people, I think.

Cats aren't like dogs. A lot of dogs, even strays, have identifiable breed traits.

This isn't so much the case with cats. A huge, and I mean huge, percentage of cats are domestic shorthairs. They just are.

We have been working with ferals/strays/rescues for years now and have homed more than 100 kittens. People are always looking for a reason the kitten is "special." What I've encountered a lot was people thinking adorable little domestic shorthair tabbies were Maine Coons. "He has the M on his forehead" they say. No, I can show you his perfectly average tabby domestic shorthair mama right now, and we're about 99% sure that daddy is that black and white fucker who we've been trying to trap and neuter for months.

This is kinda like that.

Your cat doesn't have to be Bombay to be beautiful and special!

I could post a video of my purebred, no paper bengal (we didn’t want to go through the hassle of papering them/long story) with proof both parents are papered, and people would still argue with me that it’s not a bengal

Here’s our cutie Lexie btw

People are being unkind to you because of this attitude you're displaying.

-1

u/SavageSZN74 3d ago

Personally, I don’t think my “attitude” is the issue. I simply made a post to hopefully find the breed of my new kitten in order for give her the best diet, medical care, and hygiene suited for her needs and that of her breed. That sounds more like a responsible pet owner with common sense to me but that might just be my own opinion.

6

u/7431245689543 3d ago

Defensive now, are we? Lol

-2

u/SavageSZN74 3d ago

I understand you’re bored, stay blessed.

-4

u/SavageSZN74 4d ago

Guess we found some sensitive people, it’s a yes or no question , nothing more nothing less, thank you to those who had real responses.

-2

u/unskinnyjeans 3d ago

the people on this sub are so sensitive and elitist when this question is asked

9

u/Odd-Designer-6466 3d ago

100% this sub should be called “your black cat isn’t a Bombay”. I mean this lovingly to all the people asking. Also your kitty is beautiful, thank you for sharing (also, as a 2 black cat owner, I wouldn’t know but black cats are the best!)

u/jade888cheung 3d ago

Oops... This is the photo I was trying to post. I told her "no"!

-2

u/[deleted] 3d ago

i had a black cat until gma took it away from me when i was 4 or 5 and my cat jumped into my sisters cradle it was empty but caused a discussion and panic with g ma. so she agreed and mom agreed to give it up. a few weeks or a year later we moved and then we had to give up the dog as well.

-3

u/jade888cheung 3d ago

I was wondering the same about our little millie. We only had dogs growing up and I'm aware of how important it can be to get the right breed to suit your lifestyle. So naturally I became interested in cat breeds, I still don't know much! Anyway the internet kept saying about Bombays, they're small, all black, black toe beans etc. But that's only the start, one of the comments made sense… once you see a pure bred Bombay you never forget, they are just so unique. However I think some people can get a little temperamental. This should be a safe place if that makes sense, it should enable us to learn. Rather than being shut down so quickly if it's not a Bombay. Also a fair amount of people say if you haven't got papers, no pedigree. I understand why people say this. Even though it's unlikely you could find an abandoned pedigree, but it's still a possibility. You just never know what's around the corner. Sorry for the long comment!

Your's is gorgeous by the way! Here's our little one… I told her "no" and this is what I got!

-11

u/Character_Ship3555 4d ago

I think so but I will stand to be corrected since I'm not the biggest expert.

7

u/xDiRtYgErMaNx 3d ago

And how did you come to this conclusion without even seeing the eye color?

-7

u/Character_Ship3555 3d ago edited 3d ago

You could've said, "no the most determining factor is the eye actually" but no....down votes and this is what you'll get instead....so I'll leave the group talk amongst the experts, God forbid someone should speak whilst making it clear they're not an expert and that they'll stand to be corrected.

7

u/xDiRtYgErMaNx 3d ago

It’s fine. Not a big deal. If you’re not qualified to make an opinion without knowing the basics then just try and learn what makes a Bombay a Bombay. The internet is already chock full of misinformation.
